Rotor performance characteristics from an aeroacoustic helicopter wind-tunnel test program
An investigation of helicopter rotor noise at model scale was conducted in the Langley 4 by 7 meter tunnel. The program described was the first of a planned three-phase project whose purpose was to examine the characteristic noise mechanism involved in main rotor/tail rotor interaction noise. This first phase was conducted with a main rotor only, in order to identify the characteristic noise generated by only the main rotor. The aerodynamic operating conditions of the rotor system were defined during the test. The acoustic data were properly referenced
Delayed gastric emptying and reduced postprandial small bowel water content of equicaloric whole meal bread versus rice meals in healthy subjects: novel MRI insights
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Postprandial bloating is a common symptom in patients with functional gastrointestinal (GI) diseases. Whole meal bread (WMB) often aggravates such symptoms though the mechanisms are unclear. We used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to monitor the intragastric fate of a WMB meal (11% bran) compared to a rice pudding (RP) meal.
SUBJECTS/METHODS: 12 healthy volunteers completed this randomised crossover study. They fasted overnight and after an initial MRI scan consumed a glass of orange juice with a 2267 kJ WMB or an equicaloric RP meal. Subjects underwent serial MRI scans every 45 min up to 270 min to assess gastric volumes and small bowel water content and completed a GI symptom questionnaire.
RESULTS: The MRI intragastric appearance of the two meals was markedly different. The WMB meal formed a homogeneous dark bolus with brighter liquid signal surrounding it. The RP meal separated into an upper, liquid layer and a lower particulate layer allowing more rapid emptying of the liquid compared to solid phase (sieving). The WMB meal had longer gastric half emptying times (132±8 min) compared to the RP meal (104±7 min), P<0.008. The WMB meal was associated with markedly reduced MRI-visible small bowel free mobile water content compared to the RP meal, P<0.0001.
CONCLUSIONS: WMB bread forms a homogeneous bolus in the stomach which inhibits gastric sieving and hence empties slower than the equicaloric rice meal. These properties may explain why wheat causes postprandial bloating and could be exploited to design foods which prolong satiation
Analysis of model rotor blade pressures during parallel interaction with twin vortices
This paper presents and provides analysis of unsteady surface pressures measured on a model rotor blade as the blade experienced near parallel blade vortex interaction with a twin vortex system. To provide a basis for analysis, the vortex system was characterized by hot-wire measurements made in the interaction plane but in the absence of the rotor. The unsteady pressure response resulting from a single vortex interaction is then presented to provide a frame of reference for the twin vortex results. A series of twin vortex interaction cases are then presented and analyzed. It is shown that the unsteady blade pressures and forces are very sensitive to the inclination angle and separation distance of the vortex pair. When the vortex cores lie almost parallel to the blade chord, the interaction is characterized by a two-stage response associated with the sequential passage of the two cores. Conversely, when the cores lie on a plane that is almost perpendicular to the blade chord, the response is similar to that of a single vortex interaction. In all cases, the normal force response is consistent with the distribution of vertical velocity in the flow field of the vortex system. The pitching moment response, on the other hand, depends on the localized suction associated with the vortex cores as they traverse the blade chord
An evaluation of combined objective neurophysiologic markers to aid assessment of prolonged disorders of consciousness (PDoC)
Objective. Clinical assessments of individuals with Cognitive-Motor Dissociation (CMD) following brain injury are challenging and prone to errors. This prompts investigation of objective, movement-independent neurophysiological markers using electroencephalography (EEG)-based Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology. The current pilot study involving adults with prolonged disorders of consciousness (PDoC) investigated the combination of Motor-Imagery BCI (MI-BCI) training and auditory evoked Event Related Potentials (ERPs) using an oddball paradigm to produce complementary biomarkers to improve evaluation of awareness in PDoC .Approach. EEG data (16 channels) were collected from participants with Unresponsive Wakefulness Syndrome (UWS, n = 2), Minimally Conscious State (MCS, n = 3), and Locked-In Syndrome (LIS, n = 4). The MI-BCI involved assessing sensorimotor rhythm modulation, motor-imagery training with and without auditory feedback, and motor-imagery responses to closed questions over 12 sessions each lasting ~1hour. The oddball protocol was also deployed in 2-3 of those sessions, with ~10 days between first and last, featuring auditory stimuli, comprising two 5-minute sets of standard, deviant beeps plus novel sounds, in a structured ratio. We expected those with the lowest levels of awareness would have reduced ERP components, with highest latencies to peak, as well as lowest accuracy in the motor imagery BCI protocol – and that trends across these metrics would be observed across the three patient groups based on their clinical diagnoses. Main results. Significant differences in mean N1 component latencies and mean MI Decoding Accuracies (DA, for significant runs) occurred between groups – with shorter N1 latencies for the LIS and MCS groups than for the UWS group (LIS vs. UWS and MCS vs. UWS, p < 0.001), and higher DA for the LIS group compared to MCS and UWS (p < 0.001). Mean DA were found to have a significant negative correlation with mean N1 latencies (two-tailed, p = 0.017).Significance. The results indicate that neurophysiological markers from the concomitant application of an MI-BCI and auditory-oddball paradigm can augment standard clinical assessments by providing objective measures that produce robust evidence of awareness in people with PDoC. <br/
Development of a new real-time PCR for the detection of pilchard orthomyxovirus (POMV) in apparently healthy fish
Pilchard orthomyxovirus (POMV) is a virus of concern to the Atlantic salmon aquaculture industry in Tasmania. First isolated from wild pilchards in southern Australia in 1998, the virus is now a recognised pathogen of farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in Tasmania. While the current real-time PCR for POMV targets segment 5 of the viral genome, recent viral gene expression data suggests that other segments of the POMV genome presented higher transcription levels and thus may be better candidates for the early detection of the virus. This study aimed to design and begin validating a more sensitive reverse transcriptase real-time PCR (RT-qPCR) assay to detect POMV. Primers and probes were developed targeting two independent viral genes derived from segments 7 and 8, which presented higher transcription levels than segment 5 in both cell culture and infected fish. These were compared with the current POMV RT-qPCR. The POMV segment 8 assay had a higher analytical sensitivity than segment 7, detecting at least 1 plasmid copy μl−1, and was 10-fold more sensitive than both POMV segment 7 and 5 assays when analysing nucleic acid from a positive field sample. Both new assays also had high analytical specificity, detecting the 11 POMV isolates tested (inclusivity testing) and not amplifying nucleic acids from other viruses, including ISAV, a related orthomyxovirus. In the latent class model analysis, the diagnostic sensitivity of the segment 8 and 7 assays were higher than segment 5 in 93% and 92% of simulations, respectively. Seven samples (18.4%), all from subclinical fish infected with POMV, returned a positive result only with the segment 8 assay. Both new assays showed reproducible results when applied to aliquots of the same samples tested in three different laboratories. The new POMV segment 8 assay shows promising results as a surveillance tool for detecting POMV in fish without any symptoms.publishedVersio
Taking up the cudgels against gay rights? Trends and trajectories in African Christian theologies on homosexuality
Against the background of the HIV epidemic and the intense public controversy on homosexuality in African societies, this article investigates the discourses of academic African Christian theologians on homosexuality. Distinguishing some major strands in African theology, that is, inculturation, liberation, women’s and reconstruction theology, the article examines how the central concepts of culture, liberation, justice, and human rights function in these discourses. On the basis of a qualitative analysis of a large number of publications, the article shows that stances of African theologians are varying from silence and rejection to acceptance. Although many African theologians have taken up the cudgels against gay rights, some “dissident voices” break the taboo and develop more inclusive concepts of African identity and African Christianity
The European Nucleotide Archive
The European Nucleotide Archive (ENA; http://www.ebi.ac.uk/ena) is Europe’s primary nucleotide-sequence repository. The ENA consists of three main databases: the Sequence Read Archive (SRA), the Trace Archive and EMBL-Bank. The objective of ENA is to support and promote the use of nucleotide sequencing as an experimental research platform by providing data submission, archive, search and download services. In this article, we outline these services and describe major changes and improvements introduced during 2010. These include extended EMBL-Bank and SRA-data submission services, extended ENA Browser functionality, support for submitting data to the European Genome-phenome Archive (EGA) through SRA, and the launch of a new sequence similarity search service
Pentecostal intimacies: women and intimate citizenship in the ministry of repentance and holiness in Kenya
This article explores the intersections of gender, sexuality and citizenship in the context of one prominent neo-Pentecostal movement in Kenya, the Ministry of Repentance and Holiness (MRH) led by the charismatic Prophet David Owuor. Employing the concept of intimate citizenship, the article analyses, first, how MRH engages in a contestation of intimate citizenship in the contemporary Kenyan public sphere, especially in relation to women’s bodies. Second, it examines how MRH simultaneously configures, through a range of highly intimate beliefs, practices and techniques, an alternative form of intimate citizenship defined by moral purity and concerned with a political project of moral regeneration. Coining the notion of ‘Pentecostal intimacies’, the article provides insight into the reasons why so many people, especially women, are attracted to MRH, and hence it interrogates the liberal frame in which intimate citizenship is usually conceptualised
Effects of Bolus and Continuous Nasogastric Feeding on Gastric Emptying, Small Bowel Water Content, Superior Mesenteric Artery Blood Flow, and Plasma Hormone Concentrations in Healthy Adults: A Randomized Crossover Study
Objective: We aimed to demonstrate the effect of continuous or bolus nasogastric feeding on gastric emptying, small bowel water content, and splanchnic blood flow measured by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the context of changes in plasma gastrointestinal hormone secretion. Background: Nasogastric/nasoenteral tube feeding is often complicated by diarrhea but the contribution of feeding strategy to the etiology is unclear. Methods: Twelve healthy adult male participants who underwent nasogastric intubation before a baseline MRI scan, received 400 mL of Resource Energy (Nestle) as a bolus over 5 minutes or continuously over 4 hours via pump in this randomized crossover study. Changes in gastric volume, small bowel water content, and superior mesenteric artery blood flow and velocity were measured over 4 hours using MRI and blood glucose and plasma concentrations of insulin, peptide YY, and ghrelin were assayed every 30 minutes. Results: Bolus nasogastric feeding led to significant elevations in gastric volume (P < 0.0001), superior mesenteric artery blood flow (P < 0.0001), and velocity (P = 0.0011) compared with continuous feeding. Both types of feeding reduced small bowel water content, although there was an increase in small bowel water content with bolus feeding after 90 minutes (P < 0.0068). Similarly, both types of feeding led to a fall in plasma ghrelin concentration although this fall was greater with bolus feeding (P < 0.0001). Bolus feeding also led to an increase in concentrations of insulin (P = 0.0024) and peptide YY (P < 0.0001), not seen with continuous feeding. Conclusion: Continuous nasogastric feeding does not increase small bowel water content, thus fluid flux within the small bowel is not a major contributor to the etiology of tube feeding-related diarrhea
Measurement of the cross-section and charge asymmetry of bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at TeV with the ATLAS detector
This paper presents measurements of the and cross-sections and the associated charge asymmetry as a
function of the absolute pseudorapidity of the decay muon. The data were
collected in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with
the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to a total integrated luminosity
of 20.2~\mbox{fb^{-1}}. The precision of the cross-section measurements
varies between 0.8% to 1.5% as a function of the pseudorapidity, excluding the
1.9% uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The charge asymmetry is measured
with an uncertainty between 0.002 and 0.003. The results are compared with
predictions based on next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations with various
parton distribution functions and have the sensitivity to discriminate between
them.Comment: 38 pages in total, author list starting page 22, 5 figures, 4 tables,
