Dissipation-assisted quantum gates with cold trapped ions
It is shown that a two-qubit phase gate and SWAP operation between ground
states of cold trapped ions can be realised in one step by simultaneously
applying two laser fields. Cooling during gate operations is possible without
perturbing the computation and the scheme does not require a second ion species
for sympathetic cooling. On the contrary, the cooling lasers even stabilise the
desired time evolution of the system. This affords gate operation times of
nearly the same order of magnitude as the inverse coupling constant of the ions

A Theory of Ferroelectric Phase Transition in SrTiO induced by Isotope Replacement
A theory to describe the dielectric anomalies and the ferroelectric phase
transition induced by oxygen isotope replacement in SrTiO is developed. The
proposed model gives consistent explanation between apparently contradictory
experimental results on macroscopic dielectric measurements versus microscopic
lattice dynamical measurements by neutron scattering studies. The essential
feature is described by a 3-state quantum order-disorder system characterizing
the degenerated excited states in addition to the ground state of TiO
cluster. The effect of isotope replacement is taken into account through the
tunneling frequency between the excited states. The dielectric properties are
analyzed by the mean field approximation (MFA), which gives qualitative
agreements with experimental results throughout full range of the isotope
concentration.The phase diagram in the temperature-tunneling
frequencycoordinate is studied by a QMC method to confirm the qualitative

Critical structure factor in Ising systems
We perform a large-scale Monte Carlo simulation of the three-dimensional
Ising model on simple cubic lattices of size L^3 with L=128 and 256. We
determine the corresponding structure factor (Fourier transform of the
two-point function) and compare it with several approximations and with
experimental results. We also compute the turbidity as a function of the
momentum of the incoming radiation, focusing in particular on the deviations
from the Ornstein-Zernicke expression of Puglielli and Ford.Comment: 16 page

One of the aims of organic farming is the protection of biodiversity. In the EU FP7 project BioBio, we studied the effect of organic farming on species numbers at farm level on 169 randomly selected organic and non-organic farms with mostly low to medium intensity in ten European regions. Using a preferential sampling scheme based on habitat mapping, numbers of plants, earthworms, spiders and bees were assessed at farm level. A global analysis across the ten regions shows that organic farms have significantly higher numbers of plant and bee species than non-organic farms. The effect of organic farming on earthworm and spider species numbers are also positive but insignificant. The effects in absolute terms are small and much smaller than the variation between individual farms. Currently ongoing analyses aim at identifying the important driving factors for farmland biodiversity
Search for supersymmetry with a dominant R-parity violating LQDbar couplings in e+e- collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 130GeV to 172 GeV
A search for pair-production of supersymmetric particles under the assumption
that R-parity is violated via a dominant LQDbar coupling has been performed
using the data collected by ALEPH at centre-of-mass energies of 130-172 GeV.
The observed candidate events in the data are in agreement with the Standard
Model expectation. This result is translated into lower limits on the masses of
charginos, neutralinos, sleptons, sneutrinos and squarks. For instance, for
m_0=500 GeV/c^2 and tan(beta)=sqrt(2) charginos with masses smaller than 81
GeV/c^2 and neutralinos with masses smaller than 29 GeV/c^2 are excluded at the
95% confidence level for any generation structure of the LQDbar coupling.Comment: 32 pages, 30 figure
Combined results on b-hadron production rates and decay properties
Combined results on b-hadron lifetimes, b-hadron production rates, B^0_d - \bar{B^0_d} and B^0_S - \bar{B^0_s} oscillations, the decay width difference between the mass eigenstates of the B^0_s - \bar{B^0_s} system, the average number of c and \bar{c} quarks in b-hadron decays, and searches for CP violation in the B^0_d - \bar{B-0_d} system are presented. They have been obtained from published and preliminary measurements available in Summer 2000 from the ALEPH, CDF, DELPHI, L3, OPAL and SLD Collaborations. These results have been used to determine the parameters of the CKM unitarity triangle

Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
