    Field Dependent Specific-Heat of Rare Earth Manganites

    The low temperature specific heat C(H) of several rare-earth manganites (La_(0.7)Sr_(0.3)MnO_(3), Nd_(0.5)Sr_(0.5)MnO_(3), Pr_(0.5)Sr_(0.5)MnO_(3), La_(0.67)Ca_(0.33)MnO$_(3), La_(0.5)Ca_(0.5)MnO_(3), La_(0.45)Ca_(0.55)MnO_(3) and La_(0.33)Ca_(0.67)MnO_(3)) was measured as a function of magnetic field. We observed behaviour consistent with thermodynamic expectations, i.e., C(H) decreases with field for ferromagnetic metallic compounds by an amount which is in quantitative agreement with spin wave theory. We also find that C(H) increases with field in most compounds with a charge-ordered antiferromagnetic ground state. In compounds which show evidence of a coexistence of ferromagnetic metallic and antiferromagnetic charge-ordered states, C(H) displays some unusual non-equilibrium effects presumably associated with the phase-separation of the two states. We also observe a large anomalous low temperature specific heat at the doping induced metal-insulator transition (at x = 0.50) in La_(1-x)Ca_(x)MnO_(3).Comment: 13 pages, LATEX, 7 PDF figure

    Anomalous field-dependent specific heat in charge-ordered Pr1−x_{1-x}Cax_xMnO3_3 and La0.5_{0.5}Ca0.5_{0.5}MnO3_3

    We report low temperature specific heat measurements of Pr1−x_{1-x}Cax_{x}MnO3_{3} (0.3≀x≀0.50.3\leq x \leq 0.5) and La0.5_{0.5}Ca0.5_{0.5}MnO3_{3} with and without applied magnetic field. An excess specific heat, Câ€Č(T)C^{\prime}(T), of non-magnetic origin associated with charge ordering is found for all the samples. A magnetic field sufficient to induce the transition from the charge-ordered state to the ferromagnetic metallic state does not completely remove the Câ€ČC^{\prime} contribution. This suggests that the charge ordering is not completely destroyed by a "melting" magnetic field. In addition, the specific heat of the Pr1−x_{1-x}Cax_{x}MnO3_{3} compounds exhibit a large contribution linear in temperature (ÎłT\gamma T) originating from magnetic and charge disorder.Comment: submitted to PRL 5 pages, 3 figures include

    Brands are strategic assets and key to achieving a competitive advantage. Brands can be seen as a heuristic device, encapsulating a series of values that enable the consumer to make quick and efficient choices. More recently, the notion of a political brand and the rhetoric of branding have been widely adopted by many political parties as they seek to differentiate themselves, and this has led to an emerging interest in the idea of the political brand. Therefore, this paper examines the UK Conservative Party brand under David Cameron’s leadership and examines the applicability of Kapferer’s brand identity prism to political branding. This paper extends and operationalises the brand identity prism into a ‘political brand identity network’ which identifies the inter-relatedness of the components of the corporate political brand and the candidate political brand. Crucial for practitioners, this model can demonstrate how the brand is presented and communicated to the electorate and serves as a useful mechanism to identify consistency within the corporate and candidate political brands

    Tail myology and flight behaviour: Differences between caracaras, falcons and forest falcons (Aves, Falconiformes)

    Caracaras, falcons and forest falcons, which are representative of the three subfamilies of the family Falconidae, have different flight behaviour. Since, during flight, the tail works in coordination with the wings, the tail muscles could be indicative of the type of flight behaviour. The aim of this work was to describe in detail the little-known tail muscles of the Falconidae and to explore their possible association with this different behaviour, by using the muscle mass as an indicator. To this end, the tail muscles of 18 specimens representing the three subfamilies of Falconidae were dissected, weighed and their percentage to the body mass calculated. The possible differences in tail muscle mass between Falconinae and Polyborinae were explored with a Bayesian statistical approach. In all species, the muscles depressor caudae and levator caudae had the highest mass values (0.028%–0.329% and 0.120%–0.274%, respectively), in accordance with the key movements performed during flight, that is, the tail depression and elevation. The total muscle masses of Falconinae and those of Polyborinae were significantly different (p < 0.05). This difference can be related with the different flight behaviour of falcons and caracaras, that is, fast and erratic flight, respectively.Fil: Mosto, MarĂ­a Clelia.     Study of B0(s)→K0Sh+hâ€Č− decays with first observation of B0s→K0SK±π∓ and B0s→K0Sπ+π−

    A search for charmless three-body decays of B 0 and B0s mesons with a K0S meson in the final state is performed using the pp collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−1, collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV recorded by the LHCb experiment. Branching fractions of the B0(s)→K0Sh+hâ€Č− decay modes (h (â€Č) = π, K), relative to the well measured B0→K0Sπ+π− decay, are obtained. First observation of the decay modes B0s→K0SK±π∓ and B0s→K0Sπ+π− and confirmation of the decay B0→K0SK±π∓ are reported. The following relative branching fraction measurements or limits are obtained B(B0→K0SK±π∓)B(B0→K0Sπ+π−)=0.128±0.017(stat.)±0.009(syst.), B(B0→K0SK+K−)B(B0→K0Sπ+π−)=0.385±0.031(stat.)±0.023(syst.), B(B0s→K0Sπ+π−)B(B0→K0Sπ+π−)=0.29±0.06(stat.)±0.03(syst.)±0.02(fs/fd), B(B0s→K0SK±π∓)B(B0→K0Sπ+π−)=1.48±0.12(stat.)±0.08(syst.)±0.12(fs/fd)B(B0s→K0SK+K−)B(B0→K0Sπ+π−)∈[0.004;0.068]at90%CL

    Measurement of the CP-violating phase \phi s in Bs->J/\psi\pi+\pi- decays

    Measurement of the mixing-induced CP-violating phase phi_s in Bs decays is of prime importance in probing new physics. Here 7421 +/- 105 signal events from the dominantly CP-odd final state J/\psi pi+ pi- are selected in 1/fb of pp collision data collected at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV with the LHCb detector. A time-dependent fit to the data yields a value of phi_s=-0.019^{+0.173+0.004}_{-0.174-0.003} rad, consistent with the Standard Model expectation.     Differential branching fraction and angular analysis of the decay B0→K∗0ÎŒ+Ό−

    The angular distribution and differential branching fraction of the decay B 0→ K ∗0 ÎŒ + ÎŒ − are studied using a data sample, collected by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at s√=7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−1. Several angular observables are measured in bins of the dimuon invariant mass squared, q 2. A first measurement of the zero-crossing point of the forward-backward asymmetry of the dimuon system is also presented. The zero-crossing point is measured to be q20=4.9±0.9GeV2/c4 , where the uncertainty is the sum of statistical and systematic uncertainties. The results are consistent with the Standard Model predictions

    Measurement of the ratio of branching fractions BR(B0 -> K*0 gamma)/BR(Bs0 -> phi gamma)

    The ratio of branching fractions of the radiative B decays B0 -> K*0 gamma and Bs0 -> phi gamma has been measured using 0.37 fb-1 of pp collisions at a centre of mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment. The value obtained is BR(B0 -> K*0 gamma)/BR(Bs0 -> phi gamma) = 1.12 +/- 0.08 ^{+0.06}_{-0.04} ^{+0.09}_{-0.08}, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is associated to the ratio of fragmentation fractions fs/fd. Using the world average for BR(B0 -> K*0 gamma) = (4.33 +/- 0.15) x 10^{-5}, the branching fraction BR(Bs0 -> phi gamma) is measured to be (3.9 +/- 0.5) x 10^{-5}, which is the most precise measurement to date.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figure, 2 table

    Observation of associated production of a ZZ boson with a DD meson in the~forward region

    A search for associated production of a ZZ boson with an open charm meson is presented using a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−‘1.0\,\mathrm{fb}^{-`} of proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7\,TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment. %% Seven candidate events for associated production of a ZZ boson with a D0D^0 meson and four candidate events for a ZZ boson with a D+D^+ meson are observed with a combined significance of 5.1standard deviations.     Search for CP violation in D+→K−K+π+D^{+} \to K^{-}K^{+}\pi^{+} decays

    A model-independent search for direct CP violation in the Cabibbo suppressed decay D+→K−K+π+D^+ \to K^- K^+\pi^+ in a sample of approximately 370,000 decays is carried out. The data were collected by the LHCb experiment in 2010 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35 pb−1^{-1}. The normalized Dalitz plot distributions for D+D^+ and D−D^- are compared using four different binning schemes that are sensitive to different manifestations of CP violation.
