    Twenty-first-century African and Asian Migration to Europe and the Rise of the Ethno-topographic Narrative

    The first two decades of the twenty-first century have witnessed a rise in the publication of narratives concerning contemporary African and Asian migration to Europe, written individually or collectively, by Asian, African and/or European authors. While scholarly attention has increasingly turned to these texts, our purpose is to further investigate them from a pan-European perspective and to propose a model for their analysis as a distinct literary genre. We therefore introduce the ethno-topographic narrative to define, classify and systematically analyze twenty-first-century migration narratives published in Europe in relation to theory, method, corpus, generic type, individual or collective authorship, border and periphery/center, literal and figurative spaces, and multi-voiced modes of narration, including the gaze of the migrant, among other literary and taxonomic criteria. Focusing on five representative samples from Germany, Sweden, Italy, the UK and Greece, we argue that the new geopolitically-charged genre to which these texts belong constitutes a dynamic part of European literatures that attempts to unsettle the monolithic European canon, rejecting, as it does so, the label of the “exotic” text displaying “foreign” characters. Our approach is grounded on the implications of the three components of ethno-topographic (ethnos, topos, graphein), which enable a tripartite form of literary analysis

    In El hablador ethnical and cultural dichotomy on various levels is presented: between Indian, Mestizo, and Westerners; between the real author’s voice and the fictional characters’ voices; between authorial ideology and textual ideology; between the worldview of Indians (subaltern subjects) and Westerners (hegemonic subjects); between Indians’ acceptance or resistance to adopt Westerners’ way of life; and between the novel and ethnography as narrative forms. In order to analyze such a variety of meanings, I propose a twofold and parallel reading: 1) as a fictional story elaborated by an author-narrator who represents himself in the process of writing a novel and 2) as an ethnographic report composed, in novel form, by an ethnologist-narrator who employs basic methods and techniques from ethnography to elaborate a fictional account about a teller of myths and traditions from the Machiguenga Indians of the Amazon.En El hablador se plantea la dualidad en la identidad étnica y cultural entre el indio, el mestizo y el occidental; entre las voces del autor real y sus narradores ficticios; entre la ideología autorial y la ideología textual; entre la cosmovisión del indígena (sujeto subalterno) y el occidental (sujeto hegemónico); entre aceptación y resistencia a la occidentalización de indígenas; y entre novela y etnografía como formas de narración.     Evaluación de tres modelos para estimar la variación diurna y diaria de la radiación neta en un cultivo de tomates (Licopersicon esculentum Mill)

    Resumen (Spanish, English)36 p.Se desarrolló un estudio para evaluar tres modelos que permiten estimar la radiación neta (Rn) en intervalos de tiempo de veinte minutos y cada 24 horas. Para ello se instaló un sistema meteorológico automático que midió variables climáticas (radiación global, radiación neta, temperatura del aire, humedad relativa y presión de vapor) en la parte central de un cultivo de tomate ubicado en la Estación Experimental Panguilemo (35º23’13” latitud sur, 71º40’42” longitud oeste y a una altura de 110,5 m sobre el nivel del mar). Los resultados de este estudio indicaron que el mejor modelo evaluado fue capaz de estimar la variación diurna de la Rn en intervalos de tiempo de 20 minutos con una desviación estándar del error (DEE) de 32 Wm-2 y un error absoluto (Ea) de 3,4%. Por otro lado, la Rn diaria estimada presentó una DEE y un Ea de 0,04 MJm-2d-1 y 3,4%, respectivamente. Los mayores errores entre los valores de radiación neta observada (RnO) y estimada (RnE) fueron asociados a la estimación de la emisividad del aire

    Current situation of allergy education in Mexico and other parts of Latin America

    Allergic diseases are one of the most frequent chronic diseases in the world. It has been established that there is a worldwide epidemic of allergic diseases; therefore, the treatment of allergies should be acknowledged as a worldwide priority and the specialty of allergy should be considered an important field in medicine. Due to the fact that allergic diseases involve many organs, and Allergy and Clinical Immunology is one of the specialties in which physicians may be trained to treat patients of all ages, the subject in medical schools is not always taught as an individual specialty but often as part of another subject such as internal medicine or pediatrics. Certified allergists are an important contribution to health systems, providing the necessary care for patients who have allergic diseases. Undergraduate programs in many universities do not include allergy as a subject, contributing to a lack of knowledge regarding the correct management of allergic diseases. World Health Organization (WHO) recommends 1 allergist per 50,000 people; however, there is an uneven distribution of allergy and clinical immunology specialists. Most practitioners are localized mainly in larger cities and state capitals, while in other regions, specialists are still greatly needed. Support and training systems are required for allergy and clinical immunology specialists to promote continuing education and keep their clinical competence up to date, which will lead to better care for their patients. Increased exposure to the concepts of allergy and clinical immunology diagnosis and treatment in undergraduate education may also potentially lead to an increase in interest in the field of allergy and clinical immunology among physicians in training. This review will approach allergy education in Mexico and other parts of Latin America

    The CALIFA survey across the Hubble sequence Spatially resolved stellar population properties in galaxies

    Various different physical processes contribute to the star formation and stellar mass assembly histories of galaxies. One important approach to understanding the significance of these different processes on galaxy evolution is the study of the stellar population content of today’s galaxies in a spatially resolved manner. The aim of this paper is to characterize in detail the radial structure of stellar population properties of galaxies in the nearby universe, based on a uniquely large galaxy sample, considering the quality and coverage of the data. The sample under study was drawn from the CALIFA survey and contains 300 galaxies observed with integral field spectroscopy. These cover a wide range of Hubble types, from spheroids to spiral galaxies, while stellar masses range from M? ∼ 109 to 7 × 1011 M . We apply the fossil record method based on spectral synthesis techniques to recover the following physical properties for each spatial resolution element in our target galaxies: the stellar mass surface density (µ?), stellar extinction (AV ), light-weighted and mass-weighted ages (hlog ageiL, hlog ageiM), and mass-weighted metallicity (hlog Z?iM). To study mean trends with overall galaxy properties, the individual radial profiles are stacked in seven bins of galaxy morphology (E, S0, Sa, Sb, Sbc, Sc, and Sd). We confirm that more massive galaxies are more compact, older, more metal rich, and less reddened by dust. Additionally, we find that these trends are preserved spatially with the radial distance to the nucleus. Deviations from these relations appear correlated with Hubble type: earlier types are more compact, older, and more metal rich for a given M?, which is evidence that quenching is related to morphology, but not driven by mass. Negative gradients of hlog ageiL are consistent with an inside-out growth of galaxies, with the largest hlog ageiL gradients in Sb–Sbc galaxies. Further, the mean stellar ages of disks and bulges are correlated and with disks covering a wider range of ages, and late-type spirals hosting younger disks. However, age gradients are only mildly negative or flat beyond R ∼ 2 HLR (half light radius), indicating that star formation is more uniformly distributed or that stellar migration is important at these distances. The gradients in stellar mass surface density depend mostly on stellar mass, in the sense that more massive galaxies are more centrally concentrated. Whatever sets the concentration indices of galaxies obviously depends less on quenching/morphology than on the depth of the potential well. There is a secondary correlation in the sense that at the same M? early-type galaxies have steeper gradients. The µ? gradients outside 1 HLR show no dependence on Hubble type. We find mildly negative hlog Z?iM gradients, which are shallower than predicted from models of galaxy evolution in isolation. In general, metallicity gradients depend on stellar mass, and less on morphology, hinting that metallicity is affected by both – the depth of the potential well and morphology/quenching. Thus, the largest hlog Z?iM gradients occur in Milky Way-like Sb–Sbc galaxies, and are similar to those measured above the Galactic disk. Sc spirals show flatter hlog Z?iM gradients, possibly indicating a larger contribution from secular evolution in disks. The galaxies from the sample have decreasing-outward stellar extinction; all spirals show similar radial profiles, independent from the stellar mass, but redder than E and S0. Overall, we conclude that quenching processes act in manners that are independent of mass, while metallicity and galaxy structure are influenced by mass-dependent processes.CALIFA is the first legacy survey carried out at Calar Alto.     Health enhancing strength training in nonagenarians (STRONG): rationale, design and methods

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The Health Enhancing Strength Training in Nonagenarians (STRONG) is a randomised control trial to assess the effectiveness of an aerobic and strength training program for improving muscle strength, functional capacity and quality of life in nonagenarians.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Sixty (51 women) nonagenarians (age range: 90–102 years) who live in a geriatric nursing home will be randomly assigned to either a usual care (control) group (n = 30) or an intervention (training) group (n = 30). Participants allocated in the usual care group will receive general physical activity guidelines and participants allocated in the intervention group will also enrol in three weekly non-consecutive individualized training sessions (~45–50 min each) during 8 weeks. The exercise program will consist of muscular strength [with a special focus on leg press at 30% (start of the program) to 70% 1 repetition maximum (end)] and aerobic exercises (cycle-ergometry during 3–5 to 15 minutes at 12–14 points in the rate of perceived exertion scale).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Results from STRONG will help to better understand the potential of regular physical activity for improving the well-being of the oldest population groups.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The increase in life expectancy together with the dramatic decrease in birth rates in industrialized countries calls the attention to health care systems and public health policymakers to focus attention on promoting healthy lifestyle in the highest sector of the population pyramid. Our study attempts to improve functional capacity and QOL of nonagenarians by implementing an individualised aerobic and strength training program in a geriatric residential care.     IgE allergy diagnostics and other relevant tests in allergy, a World Allergy Organization position paper

    Currently, testing for immunoglobulin E (IgE) sensitization is the cornerstone of diagnostic evaluation in suspected allergic conditions. This review provides a thorough and updated critical appraisal of the most frequently used diagnostic tests, both in vivo and in vitro. It discusses skin tests, challenges, and serological and cellular in vitro tests, and provides an overview of indications, advantages and disadvantages of each in conditions such as respiratory, food, venom, drug, and occupational allergy. Skin prick testing remains the first line approach in most instances; the added value of serum specific IgE to whole allergen extracts or components, as well as the role of basophil activation tests, is evaluated. Unproven, non-validated, diagnostic tests are also discussed. Throughout the review, the reader must bear in mind the relevance of differentiating between sensitization and allergy; the latter entails not only allergic sensitization, but also clinically relevant symptoms triggered by the culprit allergen
