Shubnikov-de Haas Effect and Magnetic Breakdown in Be
Magnetic breakdown in the basal plane of Be was investigated in fields up to 150 kG. Geometrical aspects of the open orbits caused by breakdown are discussed. An estimate of 30 kG for the characteristic breakdown field is obtained by applying the theory of Falicov et al. Shubnikov-de Haas frequency measurements are reported for the central-cigar cross section. These measurements are relevant to a recent conjecture that the Onsager-Lifshitz quantization scheme may be violated in the presence of magnetic breakdown
Long-Term Safety of a Coordinated Delivery Tablet of Enteric-Coated Aspirin 325 mg and Immediate-Release Omeprazole 40 mg for Secondary Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Patients at GI Risk
Introduction: In two, 6-month, randomized, double-blind Phase 3 trials, PA32540 (enteric-coated aspirin 325 mg and immediate-release omeprazole 40 mg) compared to aspirin alone was associated with fewer endoscopic gastric and duodenal ulcers in patients requiring aspirin therapy for secondary cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention who were at risk for upper gastrointestinal (UGI) events. Aims: In this 12-month, open-label, multicenter Phase 3 study, we evaluated the long-term cardiovascular and gastrointestinal safety of PA32540 in subjects who were taking aspirin 325 mg daily for =3 months for secondary CVD prevention and were at risk for aspirin-associated UGI events. Enrolled subjects received PA32540 once daily for up to 12 months and were assessed at baseline, month 1, month 6, and month 12. Results: The overall safety population consisted of 379 subjects, and 290 subjects (76%) were on PA32540 for =348 days (12-month completers). Adverse events (AEs) caused study withdrawal in 13.5% of subjects, most commonly gastroesophageal reflux disease (1.1%). Treatment-emergent AEs occurred in 76% of the safety population (11% treatment-related) and 73% of 12-month completers (8% treatment-related). The most common treatment-related AE was dyspepsia (2%). One subject had a gastric ulcer observed on for-cause endoscopy. There were five cases of adjudicated nonfatal myocardial infarction, one nonfatal stroke, and one cardiovascular death, but none considered treatment-related. Conclusions: Long-term treatment with PA32540 once daily for up to 12 months in subjects at risk for aspirin-associated UGI events is not associated with any new or unexpected safety events
Semiclassical theory of quasiparticles in the superconducting state
We have developed a semiclassical approach to solving the Bogoliubov - de
Gennes equations for superconductors. It is based on the study of classical
orbits governed by an effective Hamiltonian corresponding to the quasiparticles
in the superconducting state and includes an account of the Bohr-Sommerfeld
quantisation rule, the Maslov index, torus quantisation, topological phases
arising from lines of phase singularities (vortices), and semiclassical wave
functions for multi-dimensional systems. The method is illustrated by studying
the problem of an SNS junction and a single vortex.Comment: 74 pages, 19 figures, 3 tables. Submitted to Academic Press for

Bohmian mechanics, the quantum-classical correspondence and the classical limit: the case of the square billiard
Square billiards are quantum systems complying with the dynamical
quantum-classical correspondence. Hence an initially localized wavefunction
launched along a classical periodic orbit evolves along that orbit, the
spreading of the quantum amplitude being controlled by the spread of the
corresponding classical statistical distribution. We investigate wavepacket
dynamics and compute the corresponding de Broglie-Bohm trajectories in the
quantum square billiard. We also determine the trajectories and statistical
distribution dynamics for the equivalent classical billiard. Individual Bohmian
trajectories follow the streamlines of the probability flow and are generically
non-classical. This can also hold even for short times, when the wavepacket is
still localized along a classical trajectory. This generic feature of Bohmian
trajectories is expected to hold in the classical limit. We further argue that
in this context decoherence cannot constitute a viable solution in order to
recover classicality.Comment: Figures downgraded to low resolution; To be published in Found. Phys.

Transversity distributions in the nucleon in the large-N_c limit
We compute the quark and antiquark transversity distributions in the nucleon
at a low normalization point of 600 MeV in the large- limit, where the
nucleon can be described as a soliton of an effective chiral theory (chiral
quark-soliton model). The flavor-nonsinglet distributions, and , appear in leading order
of the -expansion, while the flavor-singlet distributions, and , are non-zero only in
next-to-leading order. The transversity quark and antiquark distributions are
found to be significantly different from the longitudinally polarized
distributions and , respectively, in contrast to the prediction of the naive
non-relativistic quark model. We show that this affects the predictions for the
spin asymmetries in Drell-Yan pair production in transversely polarized pp and
ppbar collisions.Comment: 45 pages, 16 figure
Social roles and aging from a life-span perspective
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThis study investigated the social roles and developmental tasks of adults. The study took place in a settlement of low-income families, created in The Federal District in 1989. Data were collected through a questionnaire composed of 17 open and 15 closed questions, administered by the first author during a home visit. There were 98 respondents, 73 female and 25 male, being 51 between 50 to 59 years old and 47 elders above the age of 60. The result indicated that this group is heterogeneous and that its social roles are influenced by the demographic variables - age, sex, educational level, work, place of the birth and marital status, as well for the relative variables to current residence. The data allow the conclusion that social expectations, social support and the educational level are important resources for the optimization and necessary compensation to successful aging
Adenovirus-mediated correction of the genetic defect in hepatocytes from patients with familial hypercholesterolemia
Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an inherited deficiency of LDL receptors that has been an important model for liver-directed gene therapy. We are developing approaches for treating FH that are based on direct delivery of recombinant LDL receptor genes to liver in vivo. As a first step towards this goal, replication-defective recombinant adenoviruses were constructed which contained either the lacZ gene or the human LDL receptor cDNA expressed from a β-actin promoter. Primary cultures of hepatocytes were established from two patients with homozygous FH and one nonFH patient, and subsequently exposed to recombinant adenoviruses at MOIs ranging from 0.1 to 5. Essentially all of the cells expressed high levels of the transgene without demonstrable expression of an early or late adenoviral gene product; the level of recombinant-derived LDL receptor protein in transduced FH hepatocytes exceeded the endogenous levels by at least 20-fold. These studies support the utility of recombinant adenoviruses for efficient transduction of recombinant LDL receptor genes into human FH hepatocytes without expression of viral proteins.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/45545/1/11188_2005_Article_BF01233250.pd
Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant
improvement over previously published limits.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters B. Replaced with version publishe
