Comparison of visual and optical quality of monofocal versus multifocal intraocular lenses
Objective: To compare visual quality in patients implanted with Tecnis ÂŽ monofocal (ZCB00) and multifocal (ZMB00) intraocular lenses taking into account their optical quality measured in vitro with an eye model.
Methods: In total, 122 patients participated in this study: 44 implanted with monofocal and 78 with multifocal intraocular lenses. Measurements of visual acuity and contrast sensitivity were performed. The optical quality of the intraocular lenses was evaluated in three image planes (distance, intermediate and near) using an eye model on a test bench. The metric considered was the area under the curve of the modulation transfer function.
Results: Optical quality at the far focus of the monofocal intraocular lens (area under the curve of the modulation transfer function = 66.97) was considerably better than that with the multifocal lens (area under the curve of the modulation transfer function = 32.54). However, no significant differences were observed between groups at the distance-corrected visual acuity. Distance-corrected near vision was better in the multifocal (0.15 Âą 0.20 logMAR) than that in the monofocal group (0.43 Âą 0.21 logMAR, p < 0.001), which correlated with the better optical quality at near reached by the multifocal intraocular lens (area under the curve of the modulation transfer function = 29.11) in comparison with the monofocal intraocular lens (area under the curve of the modulation transfer function = 5.0). In intermediate vision, visual acuity was 0.28 Âą 0.16 logMAR (multifocal) and 0.36 Âą 0.14 logMAR (monofocal) with p = 0.014, also in good agreement with the values measured in the optical quality (area under the curve of the modulation transfer function = 10.69 (multifocal) and 8.86 (monofocal)). The contrast sensitivity was similar in almost all frequencies. PelliâRobson was slightly better in the monofocal (1.73) than in the multifocal group (1.64; p = 0.023).
Conclusion: Patients implanted with multifocal ZMB00 achieved a distance visual acuity similar to those implanted with monofocal ZCB00, but showed significantly better intermediate and near visual acuity. A correlation was found between intraocular lensesâ optical quality and patientsâ visual acuity. Contrast sensitivity was very similar between the multifocal and monofocal groups
Probing the close environment of young stellar objects with interferometry
The study of Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) is one of the most exciting topics
that can be undertaken by long baseline optical interferometry. The magnitudes
of these objects are at the edge of capabilities of current optical
interferometers, limiting the studies to a few dozen, but are well within the
capability of coming large aperture interferometers like the VLT
Interferometer, the Keck Interferometer, the Large Binocular Telescope or
'OHANA. The milli-arcsecond spatial resolution reached by interferometry probes
the very close environment of young stars, down to a tenth of an astronomical
unit. In this paper, I review the different aspects of star formation that can
be tackled by interferometry: circumstellar disks, multiplicity, jets. I
present recent observations performed with operational infrared
interferometers, IOTA, PTI and ISI, and I show why in the next future one will

Veinticuatro muestras de pericardio de ternera estabilizado, material similar al utilizado en la fabricaciĂłn de velos de bioprĂłtesis cardiacas, fueron sometidas a una prueba de esfuerzo a fatiga. Tras seis bloques de 100 ciclos a 1 MPa de presiĂłn mĂĄxima se rompieron 12 muestras, el 50%. La energĂa media gastada en este primer ciclo, en las muestras que sobrevivieron, fue de 0.16J, un valor inferior a la energĂa gastada en las muestra que terminaron rompiendo, 0.28J (p=0.005). Utilizando el cociente entre la energĂa disipada en el primer ciclo y el espesor medio de la muestra, con un valor de corte de 0.48J/mm para la selecciĂłn de las mejores muestras, se obtiene un Ăndice de validez del 87.5%, y un ĂĄrea bajo la curva ROC de 0.917. Este mĂŠtodo no destructivo debe ayudar a los mĂŠtodos Ăłpticos en el reconocimiento y selecciĂłn de las muestras mĂĄs resistentes y en la obtenciĂłn del material biolĂłgico mĂĄs homogĂŠne
A video guide of five access methods to the splenic flexure: the concept of the splenic flexure box
Aim: The aim of this study was to describe all the possible approaches for laparoscopic splenic flexure mobilization (SFM), each suitable for specific situations, and create an illustrated system to show SFM approaches in an easy and practical way to make it easy to learn and teach. Methods: Two different phases. First part: Cadaver-based study of the colonic splenic flexure anatomy. In order to demonstrate the different approaches, a balloon was placed through the colonic hepatic flexure in the lesser sac without sectioning any of the fixing ligaments of the splenic flexure. Second part: A real case series of laparoscopic SFM. Results: First part: 11 cadavers were dissected. Five potential approaches to SFM were found: anterior, trans-omentum, lateral, medial infra-mesocolic, and medial trans-mesocolic. The illustrative system developed was named: Splenic Flexure âBoxâ(SFBox). Second part: One of the types of SFM described in first part was used in five patients with colorectal cancer. Each laparoscopic approach to the splenic flexure was illustrated in a video accompanied by illustration aids delineating the access. Conclusion: With the cadaver dissection and subsequent demonstration in real-life laparoscopic surgery, we have shown five types of laparoscopic splenic flexure mobilization. The Splenic Flexure âBoxâ is a useful way to learn and teach this surgical maneuver
The Stellar Composition of the Star Formation Region CMa R1 -- III. A new outburst of the Be star component in Z CMa
We report on a recent event in which, after more than a decade of slowly
fading, the visual brightness of the massive young binary Z CMa suddenly
started to rise by about 1 magnitude in December 1999, followed by a rapid
decline to its previous brightness over the next six months. This behaviour is
similar to that exhibited by this system around its eruption in February 1987.
A comparison of the intrinsic luminosities of the system with recent
evolutionary calculations shows that Z CMa may consist of a 16 M_sun B0 IIIe
primary star and a ~ 3 M_sun FUOr secondary with a common age of ~ 3 x 10^5 yr.
We also compare new high-resolution spectra obtained in Jan. and Feb. 2000,
during the recent rise in brightness, with archive data from 1991 and 1996. The
spectra are rich in emission lines, which originate from the envelope of the
early B-type primary star. The strength of these emission lines increased
strongly with the brightness of Z CMa. We interpret the collected spectral data
in terms of an accretion disc with atmosphere around the Herbig B0e component
of Z CMa, which has expanded during the outbursts of 1987 and 2000. A high
resolution profile of the 6300 A [O I] emission line, obtained by us in March
2002 shows an increase in flux and a prominent blue shoulder to the feature
extending to ~ -700 km/s, which was much fainter in the pre-outburst spectra.
We propose that this change in profile is a result of a strong change in the
collimation of a jet, as a result of the outburst at the start of this century.Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
A low optical depth region in the inner disk of the HerbigAe star HR5999
Circumstellar disks surrounding young stars are known to be the birthplaces
of planets, and the innermost astronomical unit is of particular interest. We
present new long-baseline spectro-interferometric observations of the HerbigAe
star, HR5999, obtained in the H and K bands with the AMBER instrument at the
VLTI, and aim to produce near-infrared images at the sub-AU spatial scale. We
spatially resolve the circumstellar material and reconstruct images using the
MiRA algorithm. In addition, we interpret the interferometric observations
using models that assume that the near-infrared excess is dominated by the
emission of a circumstellar disk. We compare the images reconstructed from the
VLTI measurements to images obtained using simulated model data. The K-band
image reveals three main elements: a ring-like feature located at ~0.65 AU, a
low surface brightness region inside, and a central spot. At the maximum
angular resolution of our observations (1.3 mas), the ring is resolved while
the central spot is only marginally resolved, preventing us from revealing the
exact morphology of the circumstellar environment. We suggest that the ring
traces silicate condensation, i.e., an opacity change, in a circumstellar disk
around HR 5999. We build a model that includes a ring at the silicate
sublimation radius and an inner disk of low surface brightness responsible for
a large amount of the near-infrared continuum emission. The model successfully
fits the SED, visibilities, and closure phases, and provides evidence of a low
surface brightness region inside the silicate sublimation radius. This study
provides additional evidence that in HerbigAe stars, there is material in a low
surface brightness region, probably a low optical depth region, located inside
the silicate sublimation radius and of unknown nature.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figure
The near-infrared size-luminosity relations for Herbig Ae/Be disks
We report the results of a sensitive K-band survey of Herbig Ae/Be disk sizes
using the 85-m baseline Keck Interferometer. Targets were chosen to span the
maximum range of stellar properties to probe the disk size dependence on
luminosity and effective temperature. For most targets, the measured
near-infrared sizes (ranging from 0.2 to 4 AU) support a simple disk model
possessing a central optically-thin (dust-free) cavity, ringed by hot dust
emitting at the expected sublimation temperatures (T_sub~1000-1500K).
Furthermore, we find a tight correlation of disk size with source luminosity R
propto L^(1/2) for Ae and late Be systems (valid over more than 2 decades in
luminosity), confirming earlier suggestions based on lower-quality data.
Interestingly, the inferred dust-free inner cavities of the highest luminosity
sources (Herbig B0-B3 stars) are under-sized compared to predictions of the
optically-thin cavity model, likely due to optically-thick gas within the inner

Measurement of the t t-bar production cross section in the dilepton channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
The t t-bar production cross section (sigma[t t-bar]) is measured in
proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV in data collected by the CMS
experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 inverse
femtobarns. The measurement is performed in events with two leptons (electrons
or muons) in the final state, at least two jets identified as jets originating
from b quarks, and the presence of an imbalance in transverse momentum. The
measured value of sigma[t t-bar] for a top-quark mass of 172.5 GeV is 161.9 +/-
2.5 (stat.) +5.1/-5.0 (syst.) +/- 3.6(lumi.) pb, consistent with the prediction

Search for anomalous t t-bar production in the highly-boosted all-hadronic final state
A search is presented for a massive particle, generically referred to as a
Z', decaying into a t t-bar pair. The search focuses on Z' resonances that are
sufficiently massive to produce highly Lorentz-boosted top quarks, which yield
collimated decay products that are partially or fully merged into single jets.
The analysis uses new methods to analyze jet substructure, providing
suppression of the non-top multijet backgrounds. The analysis is based on a
data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV,
corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 inverse femtobarns. Upper limits
in the range of 1 pb are set on the product of the production cross section and
branching fraction for a topcolor Z' modeled for several widths, as well as for
a Randall--Sundrum Kaluza--Klein gluon. In addition, the results constrain any
enhancement in t t-bar production beyond expectations of the standard model for
t t-bar invariant masses larger than 1 TeV.Comment: Submitted to the Journal of High Energy Physics; this version

Combined search for the quarks of a sequential fourth generation
Results are presented from a search for a fourth generation of quarks
produced singly or in pairs in a data set corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of 5 inverse femtobarns recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in
2011. A novel strategy has been developed for a combined search for quarks of
the up and down type in decay channels with at least one isolated muon or
electron. Limits on the mass of the fourth-generation quarks and the relevant
Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements are derived in the context of a
simple extension of the standard model with a sequential fourth generation of
fermions. The existence of mass-degenerate fourth-generation quarks with masses
below 685 GeV is excluded at 95% confidence level for minimal off-diagonal
mixing between the third- and the fourth-generation quarks. With a mass
difference of 25 GeV between the quark masses, the obtained limit on the masses
of the fourth-generation quarks shifts by about +/- 20 GeV. These results
significantly reduce the allowed parameter space for a fourth generation of
