Effects of the second virial coefficient on the adiabatic lapse rate of dry atmospheres

We study the effect of the second virial coefficient on the adiabatic lapse rate of a dry atmosphere. To this end, we compute the corresponding adiabatic curves, the internal energy, and the heat capacity, among other thermodynamic parameters. We apply these results to Earth, Mars, Venus, Titan, and the exoplanet G1 851d, considering three physically relevant virial coefficients in each case: the hard-sphere, van der Waals, and the square-well potential. These examples illustrate under which atmospheric conditions the effect of the second virial coefficient is relevant. Taking the latter into account yields corrections towards the experimental values of the lapse rates of Venus and Titan in some instances.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures. Comments are welcom

Aportaciones al conocimiento del género Salix L. (Salicaceae) en la provincia de León (NW España)

Los autores han reconocido en el territorio estudiado 5 táxones del subgénero Salix y 7 del subgénero Vetrix así como 16 híbridos. Consideran a S. neotricha una especie independiente de S. fragilis. Se describen los siguientes híbridos: Salix x expectata, Salix x pormensis, Salix x viridifolia, Salix x pseudosalvifolia, Salix x longissima, Salix x pseudoelaeagnos, Salix x multidentata y Salix x rijosa.De cada taxon se aporta la distribución en la provincia de León en base a la cartografía UTM de 10 km de lado, así como su comportamiento fitosociológico.Se aportan tres claves dicotómicas para la diferenciación de los táxones del género Salix en la provincia de León basándose en los amentos masculinos y femeninos, así como la morfología foliar.The autors have recognized in the studied territory 5 taxa of the Salix subgenus and 7 of the Vetrix subgenus as well as sixteen hybrids. They consider S. neotricha an independent species from S. fragilis. A new distance measure for model-based sequence clustering

We review the existing alternatives for defining model-based distances for clustering sequences and propose a new one based on the Kullback-Leibler divergence. This distance is shown to be especially useful in combination with spectral clustering. For improved performance in real-world scenarios, a model selection scheme is also proposed.Publicad

Los canecillos de la Capilla del Cementerio de San Juan del Hospital de Valencia

In the medieval cemetery of the Historic Site of San Juan del Hospital of Valencia is housed a small funeral chapel founded in the late thirteenth century by the knight Arnau de Romaní. Along its cornice there are a series of heads of animals and humans that are one of the few sculptural vestiges inserted into the Romanesque iconographic tradition that are preserved in the city. So far they have not aroused the interest of specialists and no one has dedicated a detailed study to these curious and interesting images located in the marginal spaces of such a beautiful building. This article aims to complete this gap addressing the study of the corbels of the small temple, projecting a thematic tour both for its iconography and for its symbolic and functional meaning

De los inicios de la sinfonía a Beethoven : un paradigma de construcción europea

Durante la primera mitad del siglo XVIII, la escena musical europea está protagonizada por diversos estilos instrumentales con un marcado acento nacional, resultado de la herencia del convulso siglo anterior, y que confluirán en la creación de un lenguaje instrumental que hará posible la materialización de la forma musical más importante dentro del género orquestal: la sinfonía. La obra de los grandes compositores que sentarán las bases del género sinfónico desde entonces, Haydn y Mozart principalmente, no hubiera sido la misma sin la síntesis integradora de estilos que se produce a lo largo del siglo. Distintos elementos extra musicales (filosóficos, políticos, sociales, etc.) inciden directamente en la búsqueda de un estilo europeo que armonizó lo mejor de cada tradición nacional para conformar un lenguaje que ha significado una de las producciones más importantes de nuestra historia musical. Culminado ese proceso y conocidas las consecuencias dramáticas de ese delirio racional que intentó iluminar a la sociedad europea, y que tan bien ilustró Francisco de Goya, Beethoven es capaz de sobreponerse al vacío que nos dejó el enorme desengaño de tan altos ideales, para volver a conjugar en su última sinfonía todos los elementos originales de aquella tradición dieciochesca y producir un universo sonoro que vuelve a recuperar algunos de los paradigmas más hermosos de nuestro devenir cultural. Más allá de las palabras de Schiller, este artículo intenta subrayar los elementos compositivos que se integran en la más célebre de las sinfonías beethovenianas como ejemplo inspirador para superación de las tentativas nacionalistas y los conflictos que hoy vuelven a surgir dentro de nuestro espacio europeo

El violín: un instrumento para el desarrollo musical y cognitivo desde la infancia

Preparing for generation Z:how can technology enhanced learning be firmly embedded in our students' learning experience? A case study from Abertay University

Abertay is a relatively small, modern university (undergraduate population of around 4000) with a wide portfolio and a diverse student population. Around 35% of our students are direct entry from local partner colleges to years 2 and 3 of our programmes and a significant number are first generation higher education within their families. As such, partnership working with colleges and support to aid student transitions are key aspects of Abertay’s provision. Since 2013/14, the university has developed and implemented a new Teaching and Learning Enhancement strategy that has catalysed wholescale transformation across the institution. This paper provides an overview of technology enhanced learning at the university with the drivers for change being to the quality of our students' learning experience, improve student retention and progression and enhance learners’ engagement
