Growth of high-density carbon nanotube forests on conductive TiSiN supports

The final version is available at http://scitation.aip.org/content/aip/journal/apl/106/8/10.1063/1.4913762.We grow vertically aligned carbon nanotube forests on refractory conductive films of TiSiN and achieve area densities of (5.1 ± 0.1) × 1012 tubes cm−2 and mass densities of about 0.3 g cm−3. The TiSiN films act as diffusion barriers limiting catalyst diffusion into the bulk of the support, and their low surface energy favours catalyst de-wetting, inducing forests to grow by the root growth mechanism. The nanotube area density is maximised by an additional discontinuous AlOx layer, which inhibits catalyst nanoparticle sintering by lateral surface diffusion. The forests and the TiSiN support show ohmic conduction. These results suggest that TiSiN is the favoured substrate for nanotube forest growth on conductors and liable of finding real applications in microelectronics.The authors acknowledge funding from European project Grafol. The over-reset phenomenon in Ta2O5 RRAM device investigated by the RTN-based defect probing technique
IEEE Despite the tremendous efforts in the past decade devoted to the development of filamentary resistive-switching devices (RRAM), there is still a lack of in-depth understanding of its over-reset phenomenon. At higher reset stop voltages that exceed a certain threshold, the resistance at high resistance state reduces, leading to an irrecoverable window reduction. The over-reset phenomenon limits the maximum resistance window that can be achieved by using a higher Vreset, which also degrades its potential in applications such as multi-level memory and neuromorphic synapses. In this work, the over-reset is investigated by cyclic reset operations with incremental stop voltages, and is explained by defect generation in the filament constriction region of Ta2O5 RRAM devices. This is supported by the statistical spatial defects profile obtained from the random telegraph noise based defect probing technique. The impact of forming compliance current on the over-reset is also evaluated
The elastic constants of MgSiO3 perovskite at pressures and temperatures of the Earth's mantle
The temperature anomalies in the Earth's mantle associated with thermal
convection1 can be inferred from seismic tomography, provided that the elastic
properties of mantle minerals are known as a function of temperature at mantle
pressures. At present, however, such information is difficult to obtain
directly through laboratory experiments. We have therefore taken advantage of
recent advances in computer technology, and have performed finite-temperature
ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of the elastic properties of MgSiO3
perovskite, the major mineral of the lower mantle, at relevant thermodynamic
conditions. When combined with the results from tomographic images of the
mantle, our results indicate that the lower mantle is either significantly
anelastic or compositionally heterogeneous on large scales. We found the
temperature contrast between the coldest and hottest regions of the mantle, at
a given depth, to be about 800K at 1000 km, 1500K at 2000 km, and possibly over

Oxygen dependency of mitochondrial metabolism indicates outcome of newborn brain injury
There is a need for a method of real-time assessment of brain metabolism during neonatal hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE). We have used broadband near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to monitor cerebral oxygenation and metabolic changes in 50 neonates with HIE undergoing therapeutic hypothermia treatment. In 24 neonates, 54 episodes of spontaneous decreases in peripheral oxygen saturation (desaturations) were recorded between 6 and 81 h after birth. We observed differences in the cerebral metabolic responses to these episodes that were related to the predicted outcome of the injury, as determined by subsequent magnetic resonance spectroscopy derived lactate/N-acetyl-aspartate. We demonstrated that a strong relationship between cerebral metabolism (broadband NIRS-measured cytochrome-c-oxidase (CCO)) and cerebral oxygenation was associated with unfavourable outcome; this is likely to be due to a lower cerebral metabolic rate and mitochondrial dysfunction in severe encephalopathy. Specifically, a decrease in the brain tissue oxidation state of CCO greater than 0.06 µM per 1 µM brain haemoglobin oxygenation drop was able to predict the outcome with 64% sensitivity and 79% specificity (receiver operating characteristic area under the curve = 0.73). With further work on the implementation of this methodology, broadband NIRS has the potential to provide an early, cotside, non-invasive, clinically relevant metabolic marker of perinatal hypoxic-ischaemic injury
Elastic ankle exoskeletons reduce soleus muscle force but not work in human hopping

The final version is available from the American Physiological Society via the DOI in this recordInspired by elastic energy storage and return in tendons of human leg muscle-tendon units (MTU), exoskeletons often place a spring in parallel with an MTU to assist the MTU. However, this might perturb the normally efficient MTU mechanics and actually increase active muscle mechanical work. This study tested the effects of elastic parallel assistance on MTU mechanics. Participants hopped with and without spring-loaded ankle exoskeletons that assisted plantar flexion. An inverse dynamics analysis, combined with in vivo ultrasound imaging of soleus fascicles and surface electromyography, was used to determine muscle-tendon mechanics and activations. Whole body net metabolic power was obtained from indirect calorimetry. When hopping with spring-loaded exoskeletons, soleus activation was reduced (30-70%) and so was the magnitude of soleus force (peak force reduced by 30%) and the average rate of soleus force generation (by 50%). Although forces were lower, average positive fascicle power remained unchanged, owing to increased fascicle excursion (+4-5 mm). Net metabolic power was reduced with exoskeleton assistance (19%). These findings highlighted that parallel assistance to a muscle with appreciable series elasticity may have some negative consequences, and that the metabolic cost associated with generating force may be more pronounced than the cost of doing work for these muscles.This study was in part funded by US Israel Binational Science Foundation Start Up Grant 2011152 awarded to G. Cell arrest and cell death in mammalian preimplantation development
The causes, modes, biological role and prospective significance of cell death in preimplantation development in humans and other mammals are still poorly understood. Early bovine embryos represent a very attractive experimental model for the investigation of this fundamental and important issue.
To obtain reference data on the temporal and spatial occurrence of cell death in early bovine embryogenesis, three-dimensionally preserved embryos of different ages and stages of development up to hatched blastocysts were examined in toto by confocal laser scanning microscopy. In parallel, transcript abundance profiles for selected apoptosis-related genes were analyzed by real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. Our study documents that in vitro as well as in vivo, the first four cleavage cycles are prone to a high failure rate including different types of permanent cell cycle arrest and subsequent non-apoptotic blastomere death. In vitro produced and in vivo derived blastocysts showed a significant incidence of cell death in the inner cell mass (ICM), but only in part with morphological features of apoptosis. Importantly, transcripts for CASP3, CASP9, CASP8 and FAS/FASLG were not detectable or found at very low abundances.
In vitro and in vivo, errors and failures of the first and the next three cleavage divisions frequently cause immediate embryo death or lead to aberrant subsequent development, and are the main source of developmental heterogeneity. A substantial occurrence of cell death in the ICM even in fast developing blastocysts strongly suggests a regular developmentally controlled elimination of cells, while the nature and mechanisms of ICM cell death are unclear. Morphological findings as well as transcript levels measured for important apoptosis-related genes are in conflict with the view that classical caspase-mediated apoptosis is the major cause of cell death in early bovine development

in 2012. This report presents the findings of an evaluation of the Norwegian Action Plan on Nutrition 2007–2011.
The evaluation was commissioned by the Directorate of Health of the Norwegian Ministry of Health and Care Services
under the terms of the framework agreement between the WHO Regional Office for Europe and the Directorate of Health,
and was carried out by the Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Programme of the Regional Office. The overall aim
of the assignment was to provide an independent evaluation of the Action Plan on Nutrition and an assessment of the
possible options for the future in terms of policy recommendation

State of the California current 2013-14: El niño looming
In 2013, the California current was dominated by strong coastal upwelling and high productivity. Indices of total cumulative upwelling for particular coastal locations reached some of the highest values on record. Chlorophyll a levels were high throughout spring and summer. Catches of upwelling-related fish species were also high. After a moderate drop in upwelling during fall 2013, the California current system underwent a major change in phase. Three major basin-scale indicators, the PDO, the NPGO, and the ENSO-MEI, all changed phase at some point during the winter of 2013/14. The PDO changed to positive values, indicative of warmer waters in the North Pacific; the NPGO to negative values, indicative of lower productivity along the coast; and the MEI to positive values, indicative of an oncoming El Niño. Whereas the majority of the California Current system appears to have transitioned to an El Niño state by August 2014, based on decreases in upwelling and chlorophyll a concentration, and increases in SST, there still remained pockets of moderate upwelling, cold water, and high chlorophyll a biomass at various central coast locations, unlike patterns seen during the more major El Niños (e.g., the 97-98 event). Catches of rockfish, market squid, euphausiids, and juvenile sanddab remained high along the central coast, whereas catches of sardine and anchovy were low throughout the CCS. 2014 appears to be heading towards a moderate El Niño state, with some remaining patchy regions of upwellingdriven productivity along the coast. Superimposed on this pattern, three major regions have experienced possibly non-El Niño-related warming since winter: the Bering Sea, the Gulf of Alaska, and offshore of southern California. It is unclear how this warming may interact with the predicted El Niño, but the result will likely be reduced growth or reproduction for many key fisheries species
Upper- and mid-mantle interaction between the Samoan plume and the Tonga-Kermadec slabs
Mantle plumes are thought to play a key role in transferring heat from the core\u2013mantle
boundary to the lithosphere, where it can significantly influence plate tectonics. On impinging
on the lithosphere at spreading ridges or in intra-plate settings, mantle plumes may generate
hotspots, large igneous provinces and hence considerable dynamic topography. However, the
active role of mantle plumes on subducting slabs remains poorly understood. Here we show
that the stagnation at 660 km and fastest trench retreat of the Tonga slab in Southwestern
Pacific are consistent with an interaction with the Samoan plume and the Hikurangi plateau.
Our findings are based on comparisons between 3D anisotropic tomography images and 3D
petrological-thermo-mechanical models, which self-consistently explain several unique
features of the Fiji\u2013Tonga region. We identify four possible slip systems of bridgmanite in the
lower mantle that reconcile the observed seismic anisotropy beneath the Tonga slab
(VSH4VSV) with thermo-mechanical calculations
Measurement of the inclusive and dijet cross-sections of b-jets in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector
The inclusive and dijet production cross-sections have been measured for jets
containing b-hadrons (b-jets) in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass
energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The
measurements use data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34 pb^-1.
The b-jets are identified using either a lifetime-based method, where secondary
decay vertices of b-hadrons in jets are reconstructed using information from
the tracking detectors, or a muon-based method where the presence of a muon is
used to identify semileptonic decays of b-hadrons inside jets. The inclusive
b-jet cross-section is measured as a function of transverse momentum in the
range 20 < pT < 400 GeV and rapidity in the range |y| < 2.1. The bbbar-dijet
cross-section is measured as a function of the dijet invariant mass in the
range 110 < m_jj < 760 GeV, the azimuthal angle difference between the two jets
and the angular variable chi in two dijet mass regions. The results are
compared with next-to-leading-order QCD predictions. Good agreement is observed
between the measured cross-sections and the predictions obtained using POWHEG +
Pythia. MC@NLO + Herwig shows good agreement with the measured bbbar-dijet
cross-section. However, it does not reproduce the measured inclusive
cross-section well, particularly for central b-jets with large transverse
