    Exploring relationships between soundscape and lightscape perception: A case study around the Colosseum and Fori Imperiali in Rome

    Recently, there has been a growing interest to implement a holistic approach to study perception in urban settings with historic value, in which environmental factors such as acoustics and lighting play an important role. However, little research has addressed sound and light in combination. In this exploratory field study, a soundscape and lightscape protocol was implemented to gather both objective and subjective data. In all, 46 people joined a group walk around the historical sites of Colosseum and Fori Imperiali in Rome. Participants assessed the soundscape and lightscape quality via questionnaire at four locations, immediately before and after the sunset in April 2021. Acoustic parameters (A-weighted equivalent sound level, loudness, sharpness, roughness) and lighting parameters (luminance, colour rendering index and correlated colour temperature) were measured at each location while participants filled in the questionnaire. While there was little variation in the acoustic parameters measured before and after the sunset walks, changes were observed in perceptual data about the soundscape. These outcomes reveal a potential effect of lighting conditions on soundscape perception

    Real World Bayesian Optimization Using Robots to Clean Liquid Spills

    Developing robots that can contribute to cleaning could have a significant impact on the lives of many. Cleaning wet liquid spills is a particularly challenging task for a robotic system, and has several high impact applications. This is a hard task to physically model due to the complex interactions between cleaning materials and the surface. As such, to the authors' knowledge there has been no prior work in this area. A new method for finding optimal control parameters for the cleaning of liquid spills is required by developing a robotic system which iteratively learns to clean through physical experimentation. The robot creates a liquid spill, cleans and assesses performance and uses Bayesian optimization to find the optimal control parameters for a given size of liquid spill. The automation process enabled the experiment to be repeated more than 400 times over 20 hours to find the optimal wiping control parameters for many different conditions. We then show that these solutions can be extrapolated for different spill conditions. The optimized control parameters showed reliable and accurate performances, which in some cases, outperformed humans at the same task.This work was supported by BEKO PLC and Symphony Kitchens. The sources of these contaminants are reagents used in DNA extraction, PCR, and next-generation sequencing library preparation, and human (skin, oral and respiratory) microbiota from the investigators

    Intra-arterial delivery of triolein emulsion increases vascular permeability in skeletal muscles of rabbits

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To test the hypothesis that triolein emulsion will increase vascular permeability of skeletal muscle.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Triolein emulsion was infused into the superficial femoral artery in rabbits (triolein group, n = 12). As a control, saline was infused (saline group, n = 18). Pre- and post-contrast T1-weighted MR images were obtained two hours after infusion. The MR images were qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated by assessing the contrast enhancement of the ipsilateral muscles. Histologic examination was performed in all rabbits.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The ipsilateral muscles of the rabbits in the triolein group showed contrast enhancement, as opposed to in the ipsilateral muscles of the rabbits in the saline group. The contrast enhancement of the lesions was statistically significant (p < 0.001). Histologic findings showed that most examination areas of the triolein and saline groups had a normal appearance.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Rabbit thigh muscle revealed significantly increased vascular permeability with triolein emulsion; this was clearly demonstrated on the postcontrast MR images.</p

    The genomes of two key bumblebee species with primitive eusocial organization

    Background: The shift from solitary to social behavior is one of the major evolutionary transitions. Primitively eusocial bumblebees are uniquely placed to illuminate the evolution of highly eusocial insect societies. Bumblebees are also invaluable natural and agricultural pollinators, and there is widespread concern over recent population declines in some species. High-quality genomic data will inform key aspects of bumblebee biology, including susceptibility to implicated population viability threats. Results: We report the high quality draft genome sequences of Bombus terrestris and Bombus impatiens, two ecologically dominant bumblebees and widely utilized study species. Comparing these new genomes to those of the highly eusocial honeybee Apis mellifera and other Hymenoptera, we identify deeply conserved similarities, as well as novelties key to the biology of these organisms. Some honeybee genome features thought to underpin advanced eusociality are also present in bumblebees, indicating an earlier evolution in the bee lineage. Xenobiotic detoxification and immune genes are similarly depauperate in bumblebees and honeybees, and multiple categories of genes linked to social organization, including development and behavior, show high conservation. Key differences identified include a bias in bumblebee chemoreception towards gustation from olfaction, and striking differences in microRNAs, potentially responsible for gene regulation underlying social and other traits. Conclusions: These two bumblebee genomes provide a foundation for post-genomic research on these key pollinators and insect societies. Overall, gene repertoires suggest that the route to advanced eusociality in bees was mediated by many small changes in many genes and processes, and not by notable expansion or depauperation
