Seismicity during the recent activity (2009–2020) of Turrialba volcano, Costa Rica

Turrialba is a stratovolcano located at the easternmost part of the Costa Rican volcanic front. After remaining quiescent for more than a century, in 1996 it started to show signs of unrest, until a first phreatomagmatic explosion occurred on January, 2010. Since then, the activity evolved from phreatic to magmatic, in a series of distinct eruptive phases. In this paper, we investigate the seismic records that span the whole eruptive process (2010-present), in order to identify precursory signals and characterize the volcanic evolution. A long-term analysis was carried out based on the continuous records, as well as seismic catalogs (volcano-tectonic seismicity, harmonic tremor, etc.). In addition, the gradual character of the evolution of this eruption allowed for the analysis of independent precursory stages. Thus, we inspected in detail the most important of those periods, particularly, prior to the first 2010 phreatomagmatic eruption, and prior to the 2016 transition to an open vent system. Temporary tremor amplitude decreases were found to precede most of the eruptive phases. In total, 9 pre-eruptive tremor abatement periods were identified spanning several days (5-44), which often concurred with a decrease in the SO2 flux. The analysis of the volcano-tectonic seismicity highlights the migration of magma from a deep (6-10 km) reservoir beneath the neighboring Irazú volcano towards Turrialba volcano, especially between the years 2015 and 2016. This activity peaked on December 2016 when a Mw 5.5 earthquake took place between both volcanoes. Harmonic tremor episodes thrived in the later phase when the system finally opened (2017-2018). In the short-term, compounded tonal seismic signals were identified as precursor events, such as long-period events followed by harmonic tremor or by a multichromatic coda similar to tornillo-type events. The co-occurrence of tremor amplitude decreases and tonal seismic signals is interpreted to be caused by a sealing of the hydrothermal system, which blocked the circulation of fluids and permitted the resonances in the inner cavities. This process leaded to pressure accumulation and the consequent eruptions. Thus, trough a series of cycles of sealing and rupture the system of conduits gradually opened. The seismic characterization of this eruption constitutes insightful knowledge useful for monitoring and risk assessment purposes.

Objective: Sensitive and less laborious assays are needed to detect asymptomatic Leishmania among solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients. Using SLA-stimulated plasma from SOT recipients living where an outbreak of Leishmania infantum occurred, we examined potential biomarkers to identify asymptomatic Leishmania infections. Methods: Concentrations of cytokines/chemokines in plasma from whole blood stimulated with specific Leishmania antigen (SLA) were compared against infection status as determined by a currently used cell proliferation assay. Results: Twenty-six percent (13/50) of the SOT recipients had a cell proliferation assay (CPA) indicating asymptomatic infection, and showed higher processed plasma C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 10 (CXCL10 or IP-10) concentrations than did non-infected subjects (median 2272.0 pg/ml [IQR 1570-2772] vs. 18.2 pg/ml [IQR 1-150.1]; p<0.0001). CXCL10 showed a sensitivity of 93% and a specificity of 95% compared to CPA. In addition, we demonstrated that the number of asymptomatic infections detected using CXCL10, decreased with distance from a park at the center of the mentioned outbreak. Conclusion: CXCL10 in plasma from SLA-stimulated blood could be a robust biomarker of asymptomatic L. infantum infection in solid organ transplant recipients. This study was co-funded by the World Health Organization (APW-2012/271093-O), and the Spanish Ministry of Science and Universities (via Proyecto Integrado de Excelencia [PIE] 13/00045). Planeamiento estratégico del sistema bancario colombiano

    Get PDF
The objective is to draw a roadmap for the achievement of its vision, in order to turn the Colombian banking sector into a regional referent in terms of market penetration, range, growth and profitability. Based on its vision and using the sequential model of strategic planning, it was necessary to gather information from different global and local sources in order to characterize the business environment and the inner sphere of Colombian banking. Thanks to these data, a first external analysis was performed to identify potential opportunities and threats, based on the relative position of the system and the nation versus benchmarks and other countries in the region. As a result, access to banking services, interest rates, banking growth, solvency index, safety and financial technology were defined as the key success factors of the banking sector. This analysis is complemented by the internal analysis performed to identify strengths and weaknesses in areas such as administration, marketing, operations, Finance, human resources, information technology and I+D. All those inputs constitute the basis for the formation of strategies such product development, market development, market penetration and concentric diversification; taking as a starting point the internal and external key success factors. In addition to those strategies, there are long and short objectives that will serve as monitoring checkpoints in the implementation of the strategic activities to drive the Colombian banking system to new levels of accessibility, profitability, administrative efficiency and environmental sustainability in the next ten yearsTesi

The Fourteenth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: First Spectroscopic Data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey and from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment

    Get PDF
The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) has been in operation since July 2014. This paper describes the second data release from this phase, and the fourteenth from SDSS overall (making this, Data Release Fourteen or DR14). This release makes public data taken by SDSS-IV in its first two years of operation (July 2014-2016). Like all previous SDSS releases, DR14 is cumulative, including the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since the first phase began operations in 2000. New in DR14 is the first public release of data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS); the first data from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2), including stellar parameter estimates from an innovative data driven machine learning algorithm known as "The Cannon"; and almost twice as many data cubes from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey as were in the previous release (N = 2812 in total). This paper describes the location and format of the publicly available data from SDSS-IV surveys. We provide references to the important technical papers describing how these data have been taken (both targeting and observation details) and processed for scientific use. The SDSS website (www.sdss.org) has been updated for this release, and provides links to data downloads, as well as tutorials and examples of data use. SDSS-IV is planning to continue to collect astronomical data until 2020, and will be followed by SDSS-V.Comment: SDSS-IV collaboration alphabetical author data release paper.

    Get PDF

[Purpose]: The aim of this study was to analyse the characteristics of patients with IE in three groups of age and to assess the ability of age and the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) to predict mortality. [Methods]: Prospective cohort study of all patients with IE included in the GAMES Spanish database between 2008 and 2015.Patients were stratified into three age groups:<65 years,65 to 80 years,and ≥ 80 years.The area under the receiver-operating characteristic (AUROC) curve was calculated to quantify the diagnostic accuracy of the CCI to predict mortality risk. [Results]: A total of 3120 patients with IE (1327 < 65 years;1291 65-80 years;502 ≥ 80 years) were enrolled.Fever and heart failure were the most common presentations of IE, with no differences among age groups.Patients ≥80 years who underwent surgery were significantly lower compared with other age groups (14.3%,65 years; 20.5%,65-79 years; 31.3%,≥80 years). In-hospital mortality was lower in the <65-year group (20.3%,<65 years;30.1%,65-79 years;34.7%,≥80 years;p < 0.001) as well as 1-year mortality (3.2%, <65 years; 5.5%, 65-80 years;7.6%,≥80 years; p = 0.003).Independent predictors of mortality were age ≥ 80 years (hazard ratio [HR]:2.78;95% confidence interval [CI]:2.32–3.34), CCI ≥ 3 (HR:1.62; 95% CI:1.39–1.88),and non-performed surgery (HR:1.64;95% CI:11.16–1.58).When the three age groups were compared, the AUROC curve for CCI was significantly larger for patients aged <65 years(p < 0.001) for both in-hospital and 1-year mortality. [Conclusion]: There were no differences in the clinical presentation of IE between the groups. Age ≥ 80 years, high comorbidity (measured by CCI),and non-performance of surgery were independent predictors of mortality in patients with IE.CCI could help to identify those patients with IE and surgical indication who present a lower risk of in-hospital and 1-year mortality after surgery, especially in the <65-year group
