    Atmosphere-ocean changes in the Pacific Southern Ocean over the past 1 Million years and implications for global climate

    Atmosphere-ocean interactions play an important role for understanding processes and feedbacks in the Southern Ocean (SO) and are relevant for changes in Antarctic ice-sheets and atmospheric CO2 concentrations. The most important atmospheric forcing at high and mid-latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere is the westerly wind belt (SWW), which strongly affects the strength and extension of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), upwelling of deep-water masses, and controls the back-flow of intermediate waters to the tropics. In order to address orbital and millennial-scale changes of the SWW and the ACC, we present sediment proxy records from the Pacific SO including the Chilean Margin and the Drake Passage. The Drake Passage (DP) represents the most important oceanic gateway along the ACC. Based on grain-size and geochemical properties of sediment records from the southernmost continental margin of South America, we reconstruct changes in DP throughflow dynamics over the past 65,000 years. In combination with published sediment records from the Scotia Sea and preliminary sediment records from the central Drake Passage (Polarstern cruise PS97, 2016), we argue for a considerable total reduction of DP transport and reveal an up to ~40% decrease in flow speed along the northernmost ACC pathway entering the DP during glacial times. Superimposed on this long-term decrease are high-amplitude millennial-scale variations, which parallel Southern Ocean and Antarctic temperature patterns. The glacial intervals of strong weakening of the ACC entering the DP imply a reduced Pacific-Atlantic exchange via the DP (“cold-water route”). The reduced Drake Passage glacial throughflow was accompanied by a pronounced northward extension of the Antarctic cold-water sphere in the Southeast Pacific sector and stronger export of northern ACC water into the South Pacific gyre. These oceanographic changes are consistent with reduced SWW within the modern maximum wind strength zone over the subantarctic ACC and reduced wind forcing due to extended sea-ice further south. Despite this reduction in winds in the core of the westerlies, we observe 3-fold higher dust deposition during glacial periods in Past Antarctic Ice Sheet Dynamics (PAIS) Conference September 10-15th 2017, Trieste - Italy the Pacific Southern Ocean (SO). This observation may be explained by a combination of factors including more expanded arid dust source areas in Australia and a northward extent or enhancement of the SWW over Southeast Australia during glacials that would plausibly increase the dust uptake and export into the Pacific SO. Such scenario would imply stronger SWW at the present northernmost margin of the wind belt coeval with weaker core westerlies in the south and reduced ACC strength, including Drake Passage throughflow during glacials. We conclude that changes in DP throughflow play a critical role for the global meridional overturning circulation and interbasin exchange in the Southern Ocean, most likely regulated by variations in the westerly wind field and changes in Antarctic sea-ice extent.     Co-circulation of Four Human Coronaviruses (HCoVs) in Queensland Children with Acute Respiratory Tract Illnesses in 2004

    Acute respiratory illnesses (ARIs) with unconfirmed infectious aetiologies peak at different times of the year. Molecular diagnostic assays reduce the number of unconfirmed ARIs compared to serology- or culture-based techniques. Screening of 888 inpatient and outpatient respiratory specimens spanning late autumn through to early spring, 2004, identified the presence of a human coronavirus (HCoV) on 74 occasions (8.3% of all specimens and 26.3% of all respiratory virus detections). Prevalence peaked in August (late winter in the southern hemisphere) when they were detected in 21.9% of specimens tested. HCoV-HKU1 and HCoV-OC43 comprised 82.4% of all HCoVs detected. Positive specimens were used to develop novel reverse transcriptase real-time PCRs (RT-rtPCRs) for HCoV detection. An objective clinical severity score was assigned to each positive HCoV patient. Severity scores were similar to those from a random selection of young children who were positive for respiratory syncytial virus at a different time but from the same specimen population. During the cooler months of 2004, sensitive and specific RT-rtPCRs identified the concurrent circulation of all four HCoVs, a quarter of which co-occurred with another virus and most of which were from children under the age of two years

    Serological Studies Confirm the Novel Astrovirus HMOAstV-C as a Highly Prevalent Human Infectious Agent

    Molecular identification of a microbe is the first step in determining its prevalence of infection and pathogenic potential. Detection of specific adaptive immune responses can provide insights into whether a microbe is a human infectious agent and its epidemiology. Here we characterized human anti-IgG antibody responses by luciferase immunoprecipitation systems (LIPS) against two protein fragments derived from the capsid protein of the novel HMOAstV-C astrovirus. While antibodies to the N-terminal fragment were not informative, the C-terminal capsid fragment of HMOAstV-C showed a high frequency of immunoreactivity with serum from healthy blood donors. In contrast, a similar C-terminal capsid fragment from the related HMOAstV-A astrovirus failed to show immunoreactivity. Detailed analysis of adult serum from the United Sates using a standardized threshold demonstrated HMOAstV-C seropositivity in approximately 65% of the samples. Evaluation of serum samples from different pediatric age groups revealed that the prevalence of antibodies in 6–12 month, 1–2 year, 2–5 year and 5–10 year olds was 20%, 23%, 32% and 36%, respectively, indicating rising seroprevalence with age. Additionally, 50% (11/22) of the 0–6 month old children showed anti-HMOAstV-C antibody responses, likely reflecting maternal antibodies. Together these results document human humoral responses to HMOAstV-C and validate LIPS as a facile and effective approach for identifying humoral responses to novel infectious agents

    Background Meat has been an important protein source for human nutrition for thousands of years and will continue to be. According to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development and Food and Agriculture Organisation's (OECD-FAO)outlook report 2018–2027, the meat consumption increased around 20% in the last ten years, and it is expected to grow another 15% for the next ten years. The harsh working environment in abattoirs and meat factories, such as cold and wet operating rooms and long difficult handling of heavy loads, contributing to the shortage of a skilled labour forces. This, coupled with a considerable increase in the meat consumption, paved the way for novel approaches in the meat industry to ad-dress this challenge, with robotisation and automation of the meat factories being a necessary change. Scope and approach In this work, we review the current state of robotisation for the meat industry and its adaptability to a new production concept called the meat factory cell (MFC). The reviewed systems are: (a) Frontmatec AiRA Robots for pork slaughterlines (b) Mayekawa Hamdas-RX for deboning pork ham; (c) SCOTT Automated Boning Room for lamb slaughterlines; (d) SRDViand (Syst`emes Robotis®es de D®ecoupe de Viande) Z-cut robotic system to do the separation of the hindquarter and the forequarter; (e) SRDViand ham deboning system; (f) SRDViand ECHORD-DEXDEB, a robotic butcher left hand; (g) SINTEF GRIBBOT, a chicken fillet harvesting robot. Key findings and conclusions The slaughterhouse processes can be highly automated, with products available at the market, while the meat processing plants are mainly manual; deboning and fine cuts require a higher level of dexterity comparing to primary slaughter cuts, this leads to more researches of intelligent systems. In the other hand, a new way to process the slaughter products can lead to innovation and smarter systems on slaughterhouses, with the benefits to open new opportunities for smaller producers

    Evaluation of RGB-D Multi-Camera Pose Estimation for 3D Reconstruction

    Advances in visual sensor devices and computing power are revolutionising the interaction of robots with their environment. Cameras that capture depth information along with a common colour image play a significant role. These devices are cheap, small, and fairly precise. The information provided, particularly point clouds, can be generated in a virtual computing environment, providing complete 3D information for applications. However, off-the-shelf cameras often have a limited field of view, both on the horizontal and vertical axis. In larger environments, it is therefore often necessary to combine information from several cameras or positions. To concatenate multiple point clouds and generate the complete environment information, the pose of each camera must be known in the outer scene, i.e., they must reference a common coordinate system. To achieve this, a coordinate system must be defined, and then every device must be positioned according to this coordinate system. For cameras, a calibration can be performed to find its pose in relation to this coordinate system. Several calibration methods have been proposed to solve this challenge, ranging from structured objects such as chessboards to features in the environment. In this study, we investigate how three different pose estimation methods for multi-camera perspectives perform when reconstructing a scene in 3D. We evaluate the usage of a charuco cube, a double-sided charuco board, and a robot’s tool centre point (TCP) position in a real usage case, where precision is a key point for the system. We define a methodology to identify the points in the 3D space and measure the root-mean-square error (RMSE) based on the Euclidean distance of the actual point to a generated ground-truth point. The reconstruction carried out using the robot’s TCP position produced the best result, followed by the charuco cuboid; the double-sided angled charuco board exhibited the worst performance
