    The Social Transmission of Attractiveness Stereotypes: An Investigation of Parental Expectations of Children\u27s Behavior

    Eighty-six children from the Utah State University Child Development Laboratories and Hillcrest Elementary School and their parents participated in the study. The study focused on the use of attractiveness stereotyping used by children across four age groups. The study also analyzed the social transmission of attractiveness stereotypes from parents to their children. The study included two parts: 1) a play-preference measure, and 2) a social attribution measure. The stimuli were sketches of twelve children, six toys and six girls. The sketches of children included attractive, unattractive, mesomorphic, endomorphic, handicapped and nonhandicapped children. In the study we found that parents and children use attractiveness stereotypes. Further, parents and children utilized a beauty-is-good assumption when evaluating the children\u27s personalities and social tendencies from the sketches. Finally, we found that parents in this study expected their children to use a similar physical attractiveness hypothesis in their Social judgement

    Data Assimilation as a Tool to Improve Chemical Transport Models Performance in Developing Countries

    Particulate matter (PM) is one of the most problematic pollutants in urban air. The effects of PM on human health, associated especially with PM of ≤2.5μm in diameter, include asthma, lung cancer and cardiovascular disease. Consequently, major urban centers commonly monitor PM2.5 as part of their air quality management strategies. The Chemical Transport models allow for a permanent monitoring and prediction of pollutant behavior for all the regions of interest, different to the sensor network where the concentration is just available in specific points. In this chapter a data assimilation system for the LOTOS-EUROS chemical transport model has been implemented to improve the simulation and forecast of Particulate Matter in a densely populated urban valley of the tropical Andes. The Aburrá Valley in Colombia was used as a case study, given data availability and current environmental issues related to population expansion.     Mortality and pulmonary complications in patients undergoing surgery with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection: an international cohort study

    Background: The impact of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) on postoperative recovery needs to be understood to inform clinical decision making during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. This study reports 30-day mortality and pulmonary complication rates in patients with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection. Methods: This international, multicentre, cohort study at 235 hospitals in 24 countries included all patients undergoing surgery who had SARS-CoV-2 infection confirmed within 7 days before or 30 days after surgery. The primary outcome measure was 30-day postoperative mortality and was assessed in all enrolled patients. The main secondary outcome measure was pulmonary complications, defined as pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, or unexpected postoperative ventilation. Findings: This analysis includes 1128 patients who had surgery between Jan 1 and March 31, 2020, of whom 835 (74·0%) had emergency surgery and 280 (24·8%) had elective surgery. SARS-CoV-2 infection was confirmed preoperatively in 294 (26·1%) patients. 30-day mortality was 23·8% (268 of 1128). Pulmonary complications occurred in 577 (51·2%) of 1128 patients; 30-day mortality in these patients was 38·0% (219 of 577), accounting for 81·7% (219 of 268) of all deaths. In adjusted analyses, 30-day mortality was associated with male sex (odds ratio 1·75 [95% CI 1·28–2·40], p\textless0·0001), age 70 years or older versus younger than 70 years (2·30 [1·65–3·22], p\textless0·0001), American Society of Anesthesiologists grades 3–5 versus grades 1–2 (2·35 [1·57–3·53], p\textless0·0001), malignant versus benign or obstetric diagnosis (1·55 [1·01–2·39], p=0·046), emergency versus elective surgery (1·67 [1·06–2·63], p=0·026), and major versus minor surgery (1·52 [1·01–2·31], p=0·047). Interpretation: Postoperative pulmonary complications occur in half of patients with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection and are associated with high mortality. Thresholds for surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic should be higher than during normal practice, particularly in men aged 70 years and older. Consideration should be given for postponing non-urgent procedures and promoting non-operative treatment to delay or avoid the need for surgery.     Late Oligocene to middle Miocene rifting and syn-extensional magmatism in the southwestern Sierra Madre occidental, Mexico: the beginning of the Gulf of California rift

    Although Basin and Range style extension affected several areas of western Mexico since the Late Eocene, extension in the Gulf of California region (the Gulf Extensional Province GEP) is thought to have started as subduction waned and ended at ~14 12.5 Ma. A general consensus also exists in considering the mid Miocene Comondú group as a suprasubduction volcanic arc. Our new integration of the geology of the south east Gulf region, backed by 43 new Ar Ar and U Pb mineral ages and geochemical studies, document a widespread phase of extension in the southern GEP between latest Oligocene and Early Miocene that subsequently focused in the region of the future Gulf in the Middle Miocene. Upper Oligocene to Lower Miocene rocks across the southern Sierra Madre Occidental (SMO)(northern Nayarit and southern Sinaloa) were affected by major ~N S to NNW striking normal faults prior to ~21 Ma. Then, between ~21 and 11 Ma, a system of NNW-SSE high angle extensional faults continued extending the southwestern side of the SMO. Rhyolitic domes, shallow intrusive bodies, and lesser basalts were emplaced along this extensional belt at 20-17 Ma. In northern Sinaloa, large grabens were floored by huge dome complexes at ~21-17 Ma and filled by continental sediments with interlayered basalts dated at 15-14 Ma, a setting and timing very similar to Sonora. Early to Middle Miocene volcanism, including the largely volcaniclastic Comondú strata in Baja California Sur, was thus emplaced in rift basins and was likely associated to decompression melting of upper mantle (inducing crustal partial melting) rather than to fluxing by fluids from the young subducting plate. Along the Nayarit and Sinaloa coast, flatlying basaltic lava flows dated at 11-10 Ma are exposed just above the present sea level. Here, crustal thickness is almost half that in the unextended core of the SMO, implying significant lithosphere stretching before ~11 Ma. Our study shows that rifting began much earlier than Late Miocene and provided a fundamental control on the style and composition of volcanism from at least 30 Ma. We envision a sustained period of lithospheric stretching and magmatism during which the pace and breadth of extension changed at ~20-18 Ma to be narrower and likely more rapid, and again at ~12.5 Ma, when the kinematics of rifting became more oblique

    Recientemente, en el Valle de Aburrá, han sido emitidas alertas ambientales por contaminación de aire, debido a los mas altos niveles de material particulado alguna vez medidos (PM2.5 and PM10). En el presente trabajo nosotros proponemos una metodología novedosa, basada en la medición de parámetros magnéticos en biomonitores epifitos, con la finalidad de mejorar la red de monitoreo del aire a un bajo costo. Esta metodología se basa en la aplicación de técnicas de magnetismo ambiental en conjunto con métodos químicos a 185 muestras de Tillandsia recurvata recolectadas a lo largo y ancho del valle de Aburrá 290 km2). La mayor cantidad de concentración de particulas magnéticas fueron encontradas en la parte baja del valle, donde se concentran la mayor parte de las activades humanas en el valle. Las mediciones de concentración especifica de la susceptibilidad (χ) alcanzan valores de hasta 100.8 (64.9) × 10−8 m3 kg−1 en áreas de alto tráfico vehicular y alta actividad industrial. Los valores mas bajos, encontrados en áreas residenciales se encuentran en el orden de los 27.3 (21.0) × 10−8 m3 kg−1. La mayor parte de las particulas de magnetita presentan tamaños respirables (0.2–5 μm) y pueden alojar elementos potencialmente tóxicos. Adicionalmente se calculo el índice de polución PLI, basado en elementos potencialmente tóxicos, muestra una importante correlación con los parámetros de concentración magnética (R = 0.88–0.93; p < 0.01), permitiéndonos validar la metodología del biomonitoreo magnético en ciudades tropicales de alta precipitación, además de poder identificar las zonas de mayor contaminación dentro del Valle de Aburrá.

    Complementary methodologies in air quality monitoring, such as magnetic biomonitoring, are currently implemented since atmospheric particle pollution is a relevant problem for human health and ecosystems. We carried out magnetic biomonitoring using transplanted species of Tillandsia recurvata and T. usneoides to study their retention capacity of airborne magnetic parti-cles AMP, the influence of precipitation, and magnetic properties. Plants of both epiphytic spe-cies were exposed for two, three and twelve months under uncovered and covered rain exposure conditions. The mass-specific magnetic susceptibility χ increases for both species over time, mean (s.d.) values of χ = 6.1 (6.4)?47.9 (37.6) × 10−8 m3 kg−1. The comparison of χ between expo-sure conditions suggests an insignificant rainfall influence on the accumulation/loss of magnetic particles in the studied plants. Magnetic parameters, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy indicate the presence of magnetite and Fe-rich particles with sizes between <0.1 and 5 µm, a harmful particle category to human health. It is concluded that both species of the genus Tillandsia are efficient biological indicators of AMP and convenient for air particle pollution assessment in high-precipitation environments.Fil: Buitrago Posada, Daniela.     An environmental magnetism approach to assess impacts of land-derived sediment disturbances on coral reef ecosystems (Cartagena, Colombia)

    We used environmental magnetism methods to study recently deposited marine sediments from the estuarine ecosystems on the Caribbean coast of Colombia. Cartagena region has undergone an increasing sediment load during the last decades via sediment plumes from Magdalena River and its distributary man-made channel. Concentration dependent magnetic parameters show an increasing abundance of ferrimagnetic minerals on the uppermost sediments on sites located close to the continent (remanent magnetization SIRM = 5.4-9.5 × 10−3Am2 kg−1) as well as faraway sites (SIRM = 0.5-1.7 × 10−3Am2 kg−1 near Rosario Islands coral reef complex). The magnetic grain size and mineralogy along the cores are variable, showing the dominance of the magnetite-like minerals (remanent coercivity Hcr = 34.3-45.3 mT), with a minor contribution of high-coercivity minerals (Hcr = 472-588 mT). In addition, there is a moderate enrichment of elements Cu, Mo, and Zn (enrichment factor EF = 1.5-3.8) that indicates the additional land-derived contribution on sediments. The environmental magnetism approach, which shows significant signals of magnetic minerals and trace elements, is a reliable tool to prove the presence of continental sediment supply in coral reef ecosystems.Fil: Mejia Echeverry, Daniela.
