    DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH-STRENGTH NIOBIUM ALLOYS FOR ELEVATED-TEMPERATURE APPLICATIONS

    A study to improve the elevated-temperature strength of niobium by solloving has resulted not only- in greatly improved strengths at 1200 and 1470 deg F but also in the development of improved fabrication techniques for these alloys. The most important step in the fabric:ition procedure of niobium and niobium-base allows is the initial breakdown of the cast structure. The cast structure of 1.84 wt. 4 chromium, 3.21 wt.% chromium. 4.33 wt. ' zirconium, and 20.5 wt.% titanium-4.28 wt. = chromium allovs and unalloyed niobium was broken known by- forging ingots (protected from oxidation by molybdenum ciins) at 2550 deg F and rolling at 800 deg F. After the initiai breakdown of the cast structure, the alloy-s were coid roiied to a total of 95 per cent reduction with no difficulty .A second fabrication technique was employed for a second set of alloys. Unalloyed niobium and 1.29 wt. % chromium, 2.74 wt. 3 zirconium, 4.5 wt.% molybdenum, and 10 wt. % titanium-3 wt.% chromium alloys were forged and rolled at 1000 deg F to break down the cast structure and then cold rolled to 0.030-in. sheet. the sheet obtained by this technique showed moderate edge cracking. Tensite tests on the coid-worked materiais at 1200 and 1470 deg F indicate that chromium and zirconium.ire both potent strengtheners of niobium: the 1.84 wt.% chromium alloy- hiid a 0.2 per cent offset yield strength of 107,000 psi at 1200 deg F and 69,000 psi at 1470 deg F, and the 4.33 wt. % zirconium alloy had a 0.2 per cent offset yield strength of 69,000 psi at 1470 deg F.     3D-DART: a DNA structure modelling server

    There is a growing interest in structural studies of DNA by both experimental and computational approaches. Often, 3D-structural models of DNA are required, for instance, to serve as templates for homology modeling, as starting structures for macro-molecular docking or as scaffold for NMR structure calculations. The conformational adaptability of DNA when binding to a protein is often an important factor and at the same time a limitation in such studies. As a response to the demand for 3D-structural models reflecting the intrinsic plasticity of DNA we present the 3D-DART server (3DNA-Driven DNA Analysis and Rebuilding Tool). The server provides an easy interface to a powerful collection of tools for the generation of DNA-structural models in custom conformations. The computational engine beyond the server makes use of the 3DNA software suite together with a collection of home-written python scripts.     Smart grid measurement uncertainty : definitional and influence quantity considerations

    Measurement uncertainty, in general terms, is an expression of the quality of a measurement. It is typically quan- tified by defining the location and spread of the distribution of a hypothetical infinitely large number of measurements of the thing being measured. The Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM) classifies uncertainties according to whether they are evaluated by statistical means or not. The GUM also mentions that an incomplete definition of the measurand can give rise to large uncertainty in the result. For some of the quantities measured in the Smart Grid, it may be that this "definitional uncertainty" could be a major source of problems. Influence quantities may have a bearing on the result of a measurement without being the subject of the measurement. For example, signal harmonics, noise and temperature effects, while not desired as part of a measurement, exist in power system signals being measured, and they have (sometimes significant) effects on the measurement process

    Tropospheric O3 distribution over the Indian Ocean during spring 1995 evaluated with a chemistry-climate model

    An analysis of tropospheric O 3 over the Indian Ocean during spring 1995 is presented based on O 3 soundings and results from the chemistry-general circulation model ECHAM (European Centre Hamburg Model). The ECHAM model is nudged towards actual meteorology using ECMWF analyses, to enable a direct comparison between model results and in situ observations. The model reproduces observed CO levels in different air mass categories. The model also reproduces the general tendencies and the diurnal variation in the observed surface pressure, although the amplitude of the diurnal variation in the amplitude is underestimated. The model simulates the general O 3 tendencies as seen in the sonde observations. Tropospheric O 3 profiles were characterized by low surface concentrations (< 10 ppbv), mid-tropospheric maxima (60-100 ppbv, between 700-250 hPa) and upper-tropospheric minima (< 20 ppbv, between 250-100 hPa). Large-scale upper tropospheric O 3 minima were caused by convective transport of O 3 -depleted boundary layer air in the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). Similarly, an upper tropospheric O 3 minimum was caused by cyclone Marlene south of the ITCZ. The mid-tropospheric O 3 maxima were caused by transport of polluted African air.     Addressing obesity in Roma communities: : A community readiness approach

    YesParticipation in community programmes by the Roma community is low whilst this community presents with high risk of poor health and low levels of wellbeing. To improve rates of participation in programmes compatibility must be achieved between implementation efforts and levels of readiness in the community. The Community Readiness Model (CRM) is a widely used toolkit which provides an indication of how prepared and willing a community is to take action on specific issues. We present findings from a CRM assessment for the Eastern European Roma community in Bradford, UK on issues related to nutrition and obesity. We interviewed key respondents identified as knowledgeable about the Roma community using the CRM. This approach applies a mixed methodology incorporating readiness scores and qualitative data. A mean community readiness score was calculated enabling researchers to place the community in one of nine possible stages of readiness. Interview transcripts were analysed using a qualitative framework analysis to generate contextual information. An overall score consistent with vague awareness was achieved, which indicates a low level of community readiness. This score suggests there will be a low likelihood of participation in currently available nutrition and obesity programmes. To our knowledge this is the first study to apply the CRM in the Roma community for any issue.     On Embeddability of Buses in Point Sets

    Set membership of points in the plane can be visualized by connecting corresponding points via graphical features, like paths, trees, polygons, ellipses. In this paper we study the \emph{bus embeddability problem} (BEP): given a set of colored points we ask whether there exists a planar realization with one horizontal straight-line segment per color, called bus, such that all points with the same color are connected with vertical line segments to their bus. We present an ILP and an FPT algorithm for the general problem. For restricted versions of this problem, such as when the relative order of buses is predefined, or when a bus must be placed above all its points, we provide efficient algorithms. We show that another restricted version of the problem can be solved using 2-stack pushall sorting.     A case for an international consortium on system-of-systems engineering

    A system-of-systems (SoS) conceptualization is essential in resolving issues involving heterogeneous independently operable systems to achieve a unique purpose. Successful operation as an SoS requires communication among appropriate individuals and groups across enterprises through an effective protocol. This paper presents a position on the creation of a consortium of concerned system engineers and scientists worldwide to examine the problems and solutions strategies associated with SoS. The consortium could lead efforts in clarifying ambiguities and in seeking remedies to numerous open questions with respect to SoS analysis, SoS engineering (SoSE), as well as differences between systems engineering (SE) and SoSE. The mission of this consortium is envisioned to: 1) act as a neutral party; 2) provide a forum to put forth Calls to Action; and 3) establish a community of interest to recommend a set of solutions. <br /

    DNA conformations and their sequence preferences

    The geometry of the phosphodiester backbone was analyzed for 7739 dinucleotides from 447 selected crystal structures of naked and complexed DNA. Ten torsion angles of a near-dinucleotide unit have been studied by combining Fourier averaging and clustering. Besides the known variants of the A-, B- and Z-DNA forms, we have also identified combined A + B backbone-deformed conformers, e.g. with Ī±/Ī³ switches, and a few conformers with a syn orientation of bases occurring e.g. in G-quadruplex structures. A plethora of A- and B-like conformers show a close relationship between the A- and B-form double helices. A comparison of the populations of the conformers occurring in naked and complexed DNA has revealed a significant broadening of the DNA conformational space in the complexes, but the conformers still remain within the limits defined by the A- and B- forms. Possible sequence preferences, important for sequence-dependent recognition, have been assessed for the main A and B conformers by means of statistical goodness-of-fit tests.     DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH-STRENGTH CORROSION-RESISTANT ZIRCONIUM ALLOYS

    Approximately 100 ternary and quaternary spongezirconium alloys were screened for structural and cladding applications in a natural-uranium-fueled heavy-watermolerated power reactor. The alloy additions studied included2 to 4 wt.% Sn, 0.5 to 2 wt.% Mo, and 1 to 3 wt.% Nb. The effect of 0.1 wt.% Fe and 0.05 wt.% Ni additions to the experimental alloys was evaluated. All compositions were are melted, rolled at 850 ction prod- C from a helium- atmosphere furnace, vacuum annealed 4 hr at 700 ction prod- C, and furnace cooled. Room- and elevated-temperature hardness measurements were used to estimate the tensile strengths of the alloys, while corrosion resistance was evaluated by 1000-hr exposures to static 300 ction prod- C water.     Comparison of prefrontal atrophy and episodic memory performance in dysexecutive Alzheimerā€™s disease and behavioural-variant frontotemporal dementia

    Alzheimerā€™s disease (AD) sometimes presents with prominent executive dysfunction and associated prefrontal cortex atrophy. The impact of such executive deficits on episodic memory performance as well as their neural correlates in AD, however, remains unclear. The aim of the current study was to investigate episodic memory and brain atrophy in AD patients with relatively spared executive functioning (SEF-AD; nā€Š=ā€Š12) and AD patients with relatively impaired executive functioning (IEF-AD; nā€Š=ā€Š23). We also compared the AD subgroups with a group of behavioral-variant frontotemporal dementia patients (bvFTD; nā€Š=ā€Š22), who typically exhibit significant executive deficits, and age-matched healthy controls (nā€Š=ā€Š38). On cognitive testing, the three patient groups showed comparable memory profiles on standard episodic memory tests, with significant impairment relative to controls. Voxel-based morphometry analyses revealed extensive prefrontal and medial temporal lobe atrophy in IEF-AD and bvFTD, whereas this was limited to the middle frontal gyrus and hippocampus in SEF-AD. Moreover, the additional prefrontal atrophy in IEF-AD and bvFTD correlated with memory performance, whereas this was not the case for SEF-AD. These findings indicate that IEF-AD patients show prefrontal atrophy in regions similar to bvFTD, and suggest that this contributes to episodic memory performance. This has implications for the differential diagnosis of bvFTD and subtypes of AD
