    Heat flow and geothermal potential of the East Mesa KGRA, Imperial Valley, California

    The East Mesa KGRA (Known Geothermal Resource Area) is located in the southeast part of the Imperial Valley, California, and is roughly 150 kilometers square in areal extent. A new heat flow technique which utilizes temperature gradient measurements across best clays is presented and shown to be as accurate as conventional methods for the present study area. Utilizing the best clay gradient technique, over 70 heat flow determinations have been completed within and around the East Mesa KGRA. Background heat flow values range from 1.4 to 2.4 hfu (1 hfu = .000001 cal. per square centimeter-second) and are typical of those throughout the Basin and Range province. Heat flow values for the northwest lobe of the KGRA (Mesa anomaly) are as high as 7.9 hfu, with the highest values located near gravity and seismic noise maxima and electrical resistivity minima. An excellent correlation exists between heat flow contours and faults defined by remote sensing and microearthquake monitoring

    AVIRIS data quality for coniferous canopy chemistry

    An assessment of AVIRIS data quality for studying coniferous canopy chemistry was made. Seven flightlines of AVIRIS data were acquired over a transect of coniferous forest sites in central Oregon. Both geometric and radiometric properties of the data were examined including: pixel size, swath width, spectral position and signal-to-noise ratio. A flat-field correction was applied to AVIRIS data from a coniferous forest site. Future work with this data set will exclude data from spectrometers C and D due to low signal-to-noise ratios. Data from spectrometers A and B will be used to examine the relationship between the canopy chemical composition of the forest sites and AVIRIS spectral response

    The use of airborne imaging spectrometer data to determine experimentally induced variation in coniferous canopy chemistry

    It was experimentally determined whether induced differences in forest canopy chemical composition can be detected using data from the Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (AIS). Treatments were applied to an even-aged forest of Douglas fir trees. Work to date has stressed wet chemical analysis of foilage samples and correction of AIS data. Plot treatments were successful in providing a range of foliar N2 concentrations. Much time was spent investigating and correcting problems with the raw AIS data. Initial problems with groups of drop out lines in the AIS data were traced to the tape recorder and the tape drive. Custom adjustment of the tape drive led to recovery of most missing lines. Remaining individual drop out lines were replaced using average of adjacent lines. Application of a notch filter to the Fourier transform of the image in each band satisfactorily removed vertical striping. The aspect ratio was corrected by resampling the image in the line direction using nearest neighbor interpolation

    Structural Justice: A critical feminist framework exploring the intersection between justice, equity and structural reconciliation.

    Violence against women is a human rights violation (UN, 2006). It affects the health of women globally (UN, 2009) and its elimination is at the heart of many international and national goals. Intimate partner violence (IPV), one of the most common forms of gender-based violence, affects one in three women worldwide (WHO, 2013). The consequences of IPV create negative health outcomes for women that diminish their quality of life and their overall well-being. Abused women access community supports such as shelters to seek safe refuge from the abuse and restore their lives. While shelters play an extensive role in helping women to rebuild their lives they often struggle to navigate inflexible and unjust systemic structures that can be re-victimizing to women and undermine their ability to live violence free. This study describes an emergent narrative of structural justice (SJ) that arose while examining the structural challenges of 6 shelters for abused women in urban and rural Virginia. It details the critical exploration of the intersection between structure and justice by integrating existing literature with qualitative participant narratives (N=36); and constructing an operational definition of structural justice (SJ) through an iterative process. Findings reveal SJ oriented patterns that shape five core tenets at the heart of this narrative. This SJ offers a framework out of which we can create a narrative of hope and a call-to-action. to rectify systemic violence. This framework contributes to the discourse concerning the elimination of VAW as it focuses on creating justice, equity and structural reconciliation

    Assessment of prognostic factors of prostate cancer : limitations and possibilities of morphology

    Prostate cancer is a leading cause of cancer morbidity and mortality. It is a morphologically, genetically, and clinically heterogeneous disease. Stage and grade are important predictors of patient outcome. Extraprostatic extension (EPE) of prostate cancer is a key component of staging but it is not fully understood how its histopathological characteristics correlate with outcome. Gleason grading takes the morphological heterogeneity into account and is considered one of the best prognostic factors of prostate cancer. The grading system has evolved considerably over time and it is essential to understand how this affects its utility. The aim of this thesis was to classify patients with EPE into prognostic groups and to evaluate Gleason grading trends over time and how grading reproducibility can be improved. We reviewed 1051 radical prostatectomy (RP) specimens and found 470 cases with EPE. Men with EPE had a higher risk of biochemical recurrence. When stratified by the extent and other pathological features of EPE, radial extent predicted recurrence, while perineural invasion at the site of EPE and circumferential extent did not. We analyzed trends in Gleason grading practices in Sweden and assessed the impact of the 2005 International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) revision. Data on 97,168 men with a primary diagnosis of prostate cancer in needle biopsy from 1998 to 2011 were obtained from the National Prostate Cancer Register (NPCR). There was a shift towards higher Gleason scores (GS) at diagnosis over the period but more evident after the ISUP revision. The trend remained when stage migration was factored in. This grade inflation has consequences for therapy decisions, such as the eligibility for curative treatment or active surveillance. The concordance between GS in biopsies and subsequent RP specimens was analyzed in 15,598 men registered by the NPCR between 2000 and 2012. The agreement improved from 55% to 68% during the period, but most of the improvement occurred before 2005. When adjusted for GS and year of diagnosis, the GS prediction became less accurate over time. A limitation of Gleason grading is that it is subjective and suffers from interobserver variability. We analyzed causes of disagreement in 87 prostate cancer biopsies, included in a reference image database for standardization of pathology. A group of 23 international experts failed to reach consensus in 41% of cases. The most frequent cause of disagreement was between GS 3+3 with tangential cutting artifacts and GS 3+4 with poorly formed or fused glands. An artificial intelligence (AI) system trained in grading assessed the grades of non-consensus cases and obtained a weighted kappa value of 0.53 compared to 0.50 for the pathologists, placing AI as the sixth most reproducible observer. In conclusion, prostate cancer is a heterogeneous disease calling for individualized diagnosis and treatment. These studies have highlighted some limitations of histopathological prognostic factors and suggested more standardized assessments. In a near future, AI may serve as a decision support for more consistent diagnoses
