    Surface effects in preparation of cell-size liposomes

    AbstractEffects of surface type and area were shown to be important in the yield of cell-size liposomes, but not in determining their size. The liposomes were prepared by dissolving lipids in a chloroform-methanol solution and then evaporating the solvent under nitrogen in the presence of glass beads. After evaporation of the solvent, which was rapid due to the increased surface area, the dried lipids were then swollen in water at high temperatures (higher than the phase transition of the lipids), which led to formation of giant liposomes. The number of liposomes prepared in the presence of pyrex glass beads, which increase more than 100-times the surface area of lipid-glass contact, is more than 5-times larger than in the control experiments without glass beads. The yield of liposomes in the presence of another type of glass bead was almost the same as in the control experiments. These effects may be due to long- and short-range intermolecular interactions in the glass/water/lipid system

    A lattice model for the kinetics of rupture of fluid bilayer membranes

    We have constructed a model for the kinetics of rupture of membranes under tension, applying physical principles relevant to lipid bilayers held together by hydrophobic interactions. The membrane is characterized by the bulk compressibility (for expansion), the thickness of the hydrophobic part of the bilayer, the hydrophobicity and a parameter characterizing the tail rigidity of the lipids. The model is a lattice model which incorporates strain relaxation, and considers the nucleation of pores at constant area, constant temperature, and constant particle number. The particle number is conserved by allowing multiple occupancy of the sites. An equilibrium ``phase diagram'' is constructed as a function of temperature and strain with the total pore surface and distribution as the order parameters. A first order rupture line is found with increasing tension, and a continuous increase in proto-pore concentration with rising temperature till instability. The model explains current results on saturated and unsaturated PC lipid bilayers and thicker artificial bilayers made of diblock copolymers. Pore size distributions are presented for various values of area expansion and temperature, and the fractal dimension of the pore edge is evaluated.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figure

    Estereologia das glĂąndulas bulbouretrais do coelho (Oryctolagus cuniculus) e da cobaia (Cavia porcellus)

    As glĂąndulas bulbouretrais (GBU) no coelho (Oryctolagus cuniculus) e na cobaia (Cavia porcellus) desempenham um papel importante na fisiologia reprodutiva. No entanto, seus aspectos histolĂłgico e estereolĂłgico sĂŁo escassos. Assim, o objetivo desta pesquisa foi comparar caracterĂ­sticas estereolĂłgicas entre as GBU do coelho e da cobaia como um primeiro passo para a compreensĂŁo das variĂĄveis morfomĂ©tricas que participam nos processos reprodutivos. Foram utilizados 5 coelhos e 5 cobaias adultos machos, saudĂĄveis, obtidos do BiotĂ©rio da Universidade de La Frontera, Temuco, Chile. A regiĂŁo pĂ©lvica foi dissecada isolando-se a GBU de cada animal. Determinou-se o peso e o volume de cada glĂąndula. Estas foram fixadas em formalina tamponada durante 24 horas e incluĂ­das em paraplast. Cortes seriados de 4 ÎŒm de espessura foram corados com HE para anĂĄlise estereolĂłgica. A mĂ©dia de cĂ©lulas glandulares na GBU do coelho foi 19,50 x 10(5)mmÂł (DP 2,35) e da cobaia 10,57 x 10(5)mmÂł (DP 2,07) e a porcentagem mĂ©dia de tecido glandular foi de 25,52% (DP 2,20) e 17,20% (DP 3,33), respectivamente. Todos os parĂąmetros estereolĂłgicos comparados tiveram uma diferença estatisticamente significativa (p<0,0001). Estas diferenças poderiam ser explicadas porque hĂĄ maior proximidade celular do epitĂ©lio secretor, menor diĂąmetro do lĂșmen dos ĂĄcinos e da relação nĂșcleo citoplasma na GBU do coelho. Assim, os ĂĄcinos da GBU apresentam maior quantidade de cĂ©lulas por mmÂł do que na GBU do coelho. Estes parĂąmetros podem ser influenciados por fatores hormonais, etĂĄrios, sazonais e ambientais, entre outros. Considerar as caracterĂ­sticas morfolĂłgicas da GBU nesses animais poderia condicionar o ĂȘxito da reprodução por parte do macho

    Galaxy Clusters Associated with Short GRBs. II. Predictions for the Rate of Short GRBs in Field and Cluster Early-Type Galaxies

    We determine the relative rates of short GRBs in cluster and field early-type galaxies as a function of the age probability distribution of their progenitors, P(\tau) \propto \tau^n. This analysis takes advantage of the difference in the growth of stellar mass in clusters and in the field, which arises from the combined effects of the galaxy stellar mass function, the early-type fraction, and the dependence of star formation history on mass and environment. This approach complements the use of the early- to late-type host galaxy ratio, with the added benefit that the star formation histories of early-type galaxies are simpler than those of late-type galaxies, and any systematic differences between progenitors in early- and late-type galaxies are removed. We find that the ratio varies from R(cluster)/R(field) ~ 0.5 for n = -2 to ~ 3 for n = 2. Current observations indicate a ratio of about 2, corresponding to n ~ 0 - 1. This is similar to the value inferred from the ratio of short GRBs in early- and late-type hosts, but it differs from the value of n ~ -1 for NS binaries in the Milky Way. We stress that this general approach can be easily modified with improved knowledge of the effects of environment and mass on the build-up of stellar mass, as well as the effect of globular clusters on the short GRB rate. It can also be used to assess the age distribution of Type Ia supernova progenitors.Comment: ApJ accepted versio

    Search for the associated production of the Higgs boson with a top-quark pair

    A search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with a top-quark pair t t ¯ H (tt¯H) is presented, using data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to 5.1 fb &#8722;1 and 19.7 fb &#8722;1 collected in pp collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 TeV and 8 TeV respectively. The search is based on the following signatures of the Higgs boson decay: H &#8594; hadrons, H &#8594; photons, and H &#8594; leptons. The results are characterized by an observed t t ¯ H tt¯H signal strength relative to the standard model cross section, &#956; = &#963;/&#963; SM ,under the assumption that the Higgs boson decays as expected in the standard model. The best fit value is &#956; = 2.8 ± 1.0 for a Higgs boson mass of 125.6 GeV

    Measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy of Y(1S) and Y(2S) mesons in PbPb collisions at √S^{S}NN = 5.02 TeV

    The second-order Fourier coefficients (υ2_{2}) characterizing the azimuthal distributions of ΄(1S) and ΄(2S) mesons produced in PbPb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02 TeV are studied. The ΄mesons are reconstructed in their dimuon decay channel, as measured by the CMS detector. The collected data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 nb−1^{-1}. The scalar product method is used to extract the υ2_{2} coefficients of the azimuthal distributions. Results are reported for the rapidity range |y| < 2.4, in the transverse momentum interval 0 < pT_{T} < 50 GeV/c, and in three centrality ranges of 10–30%, 30–50% and 50–90%. In contrast to the J/ψ mesons, the measured υ2_{2} values for the ΄ mesons are found to be consistent with zero

    Measurement of prompt D0^{0} and D‟\overline{D}0^{0} meson azimuthal anisotropy and search for strong electric fields in PbPb collisions at root SNN\sqrt{S_{NN}} = 5.02 TeV

    The strong Coulomb field created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is expected to produce a rapiditydependent difference (Av2) in the second Fourier coefficient of the azimuthal distribution (elliptic flow, v2) between D0 (uc) and D0 (uc) mesons. Motivated by the search for evidence of this field, the CMS detector at the LHC is used to perform the first measurement of Av2. The rapidity-averaged value is found to be (Av2) = 0.001 ? 0.001 (stat)? 0.003 (syst) in PbPb collisions at ?sNN = 5.02 TeV. In addition, the influence of the collision geometry is explored by measuring the D0 and D0mesons v2 and triangular flow coefficient (v3) as functions of rapidity, transverse momentum (pT), and event centrality (a measure of the overlap of the two Pb nuclei). A clear centrality dependence of prompt D0 meson v2 values is observed, while the v3 is largely independent of centrality.     Performance of the CMS Level-1 trigger in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV

    At the start of Run 2 in 2015, the LHC delivered proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13\TeV. During Run 2 (years 2015–2018) the LHC eventually reached a luminosity of 2.1× 1034^{34} cm−2^{-2}s−1^{-1}, almost three times that reached during Run 1 (2009–2013) and a factor of two larger than the LHC design value, leading to events with up to a mean of about 50 simultaneous inelastic proton-proton collisions per bunch crossing (pileup). The CMS Level-1 trigger was upgraded prior to 2016 to improve the selection of physics events in the challenging conditions posed by the second run of the LHC. This paper describes the performance of the CMS Level-1 trigger upgrade during the data taking period of 2016–2018. The upgraded trigger implements pattern recognition and boosted decision tree regression techniques for muon reconstruction, includes pileup subtraction for jets and energy sums, and incorporates pileup-dependent isolation requirements for electrons and tau leptons. In addition, the new trigger calculates high-level quantities such as the invariant mass of pairs of reconstructed particles. The upgrade reduces the trigger rate from background processes and improves the trigger efficiency for a wide variety of physics signals
