    Acceleration of Chemiluminescence Reactions with Coumarin-modified Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane

    Chemiluminescence has attracted much attention as a light source and an excitation mediator without electric power sources. To develop advanced optical materials, it is necessary to control the chemiluminescence behavior more precisely by molecular design. Herein, we describe influence of the connection to the inorganic scaffold on the chemiluminescence properties with coumarin-modified polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (D1421-POSS). Accordingly, when D1421-POSS was chemically excited using bis(2-carbopentyloxy-3, 5, 6-trichlorophenyl) oxalate (CPPO), it was shown that the initiation of chemical emission reactions was accelerated by the POSS connection, comparing to the model compound D1421-arm. From cyclic voltammetry measurements, it was revealed that the oxidation potential of D1421-POSS was significantly lower than that of D1421-arm. From these data, we propose the mechanism that aggregation assisted by the POSS core induces low oxidation potential, resulting in the acceleration of chemiluminescence reactions

    The effect of semantic constraint of a noun phrase on determining the prepositional representation of a sentence

    A meaning of a verb depends on the noun phrase it is combined with. A verb ""open"" used in a sentence as ""I open a window"" was interchangeable with the antonym ""close,"" but that used in ""I open a can"" was noninterchangeable. Thus, although the representation of the sentence ""I open a window"" might be associated with the ""close,"" the representation of the sentence ""I open a can"" might not. In the experiment, the priming technique was used in order to examine whether the propositional representation of the interchangeable sentence was different from that of the noninterchangenable sentence. The prime stimuli were the Japanese sentences which consist of a noun phrase and a verb, and the target stimuli were the antonyms. Sixteen participants were required to make lexical decisions to the target stimuli. The result showed that the interchangeable sentence facilitated the classification of the antonym, but the noninterchangeable sentence did not. This result suggests that the constraint of the noun phrase determine the individual propositional representation for each sense

    Decreased ADP-Ribosyl Cyclase Activity in Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells from Diabetic Patients with Nephropathy

    Aims/hypothesis. ADP-ribosyl-cyclase activity (ADPRCA) of CD38 and other ectoenzymes mainly generate cyclic adenosine 5’diphosphate-(ADP-) ribose (cADPR) as a second messenger in various mammalian cells, including pancreatic beta cells and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Since PBMCs contribute to the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy, ADPRCA of PBMCs could serve as a clinical prognostic marker for diabetic nephropathy. This study aimed to investigate the connection between ADPRCA in PBMCs and diabetic complications. Methods. PBMCs from 60 diabetic patients (10 for type 1 and 50 for type 2) and 15 nondiabetic controls were fluorometrically measured for ADPRCA based on the conversion of nicotinamide guanine dinucleotide (NGD+) into cyclic GDP-ribose. Results. ADPRCA negatively correlated with the level of HbA1c (P = .040, R2 = .073), although ADPRCA showed no significant correlation with gender, age, BMI, blood pressure, level of fasting plasma glucose and lipid levels, as well as type, duration, or medication of diabetes. Interestingly, patients with nephropathy, but not other complications, presented significantly lower ADPRCA than those without nephropathy (P = .0198) and diabetes (P = .0332). ANCOVA analysis adjusted for HbA1c showed no significant correlation between ADPRCA and nephropathy. However, logistic regression analyses revealed that determinants for nephropathy were systolic blood pressure and ADPRCA, not HbA1c. Conclusion/interpretation. Decreased ADPRCA significantly correlated with diabetic nephropathy. ADPRCA in PBMCs would be an important marker associated with diabetic nephropathy

    Emergence of a broad repertoire of GAD65-specific T-cells in type 1 diabetes patients with graft dysfunction after allogeneic islet transplantation.

    Islet transplantation is one of the most promising therapies for type 1 diabetes (T1D). A major issue in islet transplantation is the loss of graft function at late phase. Several studies suggested the involvement of islet-specific T-cells in such islet graft dysfunction. In this study, we investigated the breadth and type of glutamic acid decarboxylase 65 (GAD65)-specific T-cells in T1D patients after allogeneic islet transplantation. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were obtained from islet-transplanted T1D patients during insulin-independent period and cultured for 7 days with pools of GAD65 overlapping peptides in the presence of IL-2. Cytokine secretion profiles of peptide-reactive T-cells were analyzed after a short-term restimulation with the same peptides by a multiplex bead-based cytokine assay and by an intracytoplasmic cytokine detection assay. Robust GAD65-specific CD4(+) and CD8(+) T-cell responses were detected in patients who eventually developed chronic graft dysfunction. Multiple GAD65 peptides were found to induce specific T-cell responses in these patients, indicating that the repertoire of GAD65-specific T-cells was broad. Furthermore, GAD65-specific CD4(+) T-cells were composed of heterogeneous populations, which differentially expressed cytokines including IFN-γ and type 2 cytokines, but not IL-10. In contrast, patients who showed only marginal GAD65-specific T-cell responses maintained substantially longer graft survival and insulin independence. In conclusion, our study suggests that the emergence of islet-specific T-cells precedes the development of chronic graft dysfunction in islet-transplanted patients. Thus, our observations support the hypothesis that these islet-specific T-cells contribute to the development of chronic islet graft dysfunction

    Azimuthal anisotropy of charged jet production in root s(NN)=2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions

    We present measurements of the azimuthal dependence of charged jet production in central and semi-central root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions with respect to the second harmonic event plane, quantified as nu(ch)(2) (jet). Jet finding is performed employing the anti-k(T) algorithm with a resolution parameter R = 0.2 using charged tracks from the ALICE tracking system. The contribution of the azimuthal anisotropy of the underlying event is taken into account event-by-event. The remaining (statistical) region-to-region fluctuations are removed on an ensemble basis by unfolding the jet spectra for different event plane orientations independently. Significant non-zero nu(ch)(2) (jet) is observed in semi-central collisions (30-50% centrality) for 20 <p(T)(ch) (jet) <90 GeV/c. The azimuthal dependence of the charged jet production is similar to the dependence observed for jets comprising both charged and neutral fragments, and compatible with measurements of the nu(2) of single charged particles at high p(T). Good agreement between the data and predictions from JEWEL, an event generator simulating parton shower evolution in the presence of a dense QCD medium, is found in semi-central collisions.     Production of He-4 and (4) in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S=2.76 TeV at the LHC

    Results on the production of He-4 and (4) nuclei in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S = 2.76 TeV in the rapidity range vertical bar y vertical bar <1, using the ALICE detector, are presented in this paper. The rapidity densities corresponding to 0-10% central events are found to be dN/dy4(He) = (0.8 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.3 (syst)) x 10(-6) and dN/dy4 = (1.1 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.2 (syst)) x 10(-6), respectively. This is in agreement with the statistical thermal model expectation assuming the same chemical freeze-out temperature (T-chem = 156 MeV) as for light hadrons. The measured ratio of (4)/He-4 is 1.4 +/- 0.8 (stat) +/- 0.5 (syst). (C) 2018 Published by Elsevier B.V.Peer reviewe

    Pseudorapidity and transverse-momentum distributions of charged particles in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

    The pseudorapidity (eta) and transverse-momentum (p(T)) distributions of charged particles produced in proton-proton collisions are measured at the centre-of-mass energy root s = 13 TeV. The pseudorapidity distribution in vertical bar eta vertical bar <1.8 is reported for inelastic events and for events with at least one charged particle in vertical bar eta vertical bar <1. The pseudorapidity density of charged particles produced in the pseudorapidity region vertical bar eta vertical bar <0.5 is 5.31 +/- 0.18 and 6.46 +/- 0.19 for the two event classes, respectively. The transverse-momentum distribution of charged particles is measured in the range 0.15 <p(T) <20 GeV/c and vertical bar eta vertical bar <0.8 for events with at least one charged particle in vertical bar eta vertical bar <1. The evolution of the transverse momentum spectra of charged particles is also investigated as a function of event multiplicity.     Elliptic flow of muons from heavy-flavour hadron decays at forward rapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN)=2.76TeV

    The elliptic flow, v(2), of muons from heavy-flavour hadron decays at forward rapidity (2.5 <y <4) is measured in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN)= 2.76TeVwith the ALICE detector at the LHC. The scalar product, two- and four-particle Q cumulants and Lee-Yang zeros methods are used. The dependence of the v(2) of muons from heavy-flavour hadron decays on the collision centrality, in the range 0-40%, and on transverse momentum, p(T), is studied in the interval 3 <p(T)<10 GeV/c. A positive v(2) is observed with the scalar product and two-particle Q cumulants in semi-central collisions (10-20% and 20-40% centrality classes) for the p(T) interval from 3 to about 5GeV/c with a significance larger than 3 sigma, based on the combination of statistical and systematic uncertainties. The v(2) magnitude tends to decrease towards more central collisions and with increasing pT. It becomes compatible with zero in the interval 6 <p(T)<10 GeV/c. The results are compared to models describing the interaction of heavy quarks and open heavy-flavour hadrons with the high-density medium formed in high-energy heavy-ion collisions.
