Sporormiella as a tool for detecting the presence of large herbivores in the Neotropics
The reliability of using the abundance of Sporormiella spores as a proxy for the presence and abundance of megaherbivores was tested in southern Brazil. Mud-water interface samples from nine lakes, in which cattle-use was categorized as high, medium, or low, were assayed for Sporormiella representation. The sampling design allowed an analysis of both the influence of the number of animals using the shoreline and the distance of the sampling site from the nearest shoreline. Sporormiella was found to be a reliable proxy for the presence of large livestock. The concentration and abundance of spores declined from the edge of the lake toward the center, with the strongest response being in sites with high livestock use. Consistent with prior studies in temperate regions, we find that Sporormiella spores are a useful proxy to study the extinction of Pleistocene megafauna or the arrival of European livestock in Neotropical landscapes
dbar/ubar Asymmetry and the Origin of the Nucleon Sea
The Drell-Yan cross section ratios, , measured in
Fermilab E866, have led to the first determination of ,
, and the integral of for the
proton over the range . The E866 results are compared
with predictions based on parton distribution functions and various theoretical
models. The relationship between the E866 results and the NMC measurement of
the Gottfried integral is discussed. The agreement between the E866 results and
models employing virtual mesons indicates these non-perturbative processes play
an important role in the origin of the , asymmetry in the

Measurement of the Light Antiquark Flavor Asymmetry in the Nucleon Sea
A precise measurement of the ratio of Drell-Yan yields from an 800 GeV/c
proton beam incident on hydrogen and deuterium targets is reported. Over
140,000 Drell-Yan muon pairs with dimuon mass M_{mu+ mu-} >= 4.5 GeV/c^2 were
recorded. From these data, the ratio of anti-down (dbar) to anti-up (ubar)
quark distributions in the proton sea is determined over a wide range in
Bjorken-x. A strong x dependence is observed in the ratio dbar/ubar, showing
substantial enhancement of dbar with respect to ubar for x<0.2. This result is
in fair agreement with recent parton distribution parameterizations of the sea.
For x>0.2, the observed dbar/ubar ratio is much nearer unity than given by the

There is much interest in using Earth Observation (EO) technology to track biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and ecosystem services, understandable given the fast pace of biodiversity loss. However, because most biodiversity is invisible to EO, EO-based indicators could be misleading, which can reduce the effectiveness of nature conservation and even unintentionally decrease conservation effort. We describe an approach that combines automated recording devices, high-throughput DNA sequencing, and modern ecological modelling to extract much more of the information available in EO data. This approach is achievable now, 62 offering efficient and near-real time monitoring of management impacts on biodiversity and its functions and services

The Stellar Archeology of the M33 Disk: Recent Star-Forming History and Constraints on the Timing of an Interaction with M31
Images recorded with MegaCam are used to investigate the recent star-forming
history (SFH) of the Local Group Sc galaxy M33. The properties of the stellar
disk change near R = 8 kpc. Within this radius the star formation rate (SFR)
has been constant with time during at least the past 250 Myr, while at larger
radii the SFR has declined during this same time period. That the recent SFR in
the inner disk has been constant suggests that M33 has evolved in isolation for
at least the past ~ 0.5 Gyr, thereby providing a constraint on the timing of
any recent interaction with M31. The fractional contribution that young stars
make to the total mass of the stellar disk changes with radius, peaking near 8
kpc. Evidence is also presented that the SFR during the past 100 Myr in the
southern half of the galaxy has been ~ 0.4 dex higher than in the northern
half. Finally, structures with sizes spanning many kpc that contain blue
objects - presumably main sequence stars that formed during intermediate epochs
- are identified near the disk boundary. It is argued that these are tidal
features that were pulled from the main body of M33 and - in some cases - are
the fossil remnants of star formation that occured in an extended disk during

Predicting reliability through structured expert elicitation with the repliCATS (Collaborative Assessments for Trustworthy Science) process
As replications of individual studies are resource intensive, techniques for predicting the replicability are required. We introduce the repliCATS (Collaborative Assessments for Trustworthy Science) process, a new method for eliciting expert predictions about the replicability of research. This process is a structured expert elicitation approach based on a modified Delphi technique applied to the evaluation of research claims in social and behavioural sciences. The utility of processes to predict replicability is their capacity to test scientific claims without the costs of full replication. Experimental data supports the validity of this process, with a validation study producing a classification accuracy of 84% and an Area Under the Curve of 0.94, meeting or exceeding the accuracy of other techniques used to predict replicability. The repliCATS process provides other benefits. It is highly scalable, able to be deployed for both rapid assessment of small numbers of claims, and assessment of high volumes of claims over an extended period through an online elicitation platform, having been used to assess 3000 research claims over an 18 month period. It is available to be implemented in a range of ways and we describe one such implementation. An important advantage of the repliCATS process is that it collects qualitative data that has the potential to provide insight in understanding the limits of generalizability of scientific claims. The primary limitation of the repliCATS process is its reliance on human-derived predictions with consequent costs in terms of participant fatigue although careful design can minimise these costs. The repliCATS process has potential applications in alternative peer review and in the allocation of effort for replication studies
