    Turnout and voting behaviour in constitutional referendums: a regional analysis of the Italian case

    This paper investigates regional disparities of both turnout and voting behaviour in constitutional referendums. The analysis is undertaken at the NUTS-3 level and it considers the three constitutional referendums held in Italy in the period 2001–2016. It finds that turnout was lower in provinces with higher unemployment rates and where citizens had a stronger affiliation to opposition parties. These factors, along with level of government popularity, were important drivers of referendum results, especially in 2006 and 2016 when the referendums were rejected. In addition, while the three referendums implied different effects for rich and poor regions, mainly due to decentralization of powers, the local voting patterns did not reflect this. Overall, these findings suggest that the merit of the constitutional reforms played little part in explaining the outcome of the referendums

    Necessary conditions for variational regularization schemes

    We study variational regularization methods in a general framework, more precisely those methods that use a discrepancy and a regularization functional. While several sets of sufficient conditions are known to obtain a regularization method, we start with an investigation of the converse question: How could necessary conditions for a variational method to provide a regularization method look like? To this end, we formalize the notion of a variational scheme and start with comparison of three different instances of variational methods. Then we focus on the data space model and investigate the role and interplay of the topological structure, the convergence notion and the discrepancy functional. Especially, we deduce necessary conditions for the discrepancy functional to fulfill usual continuity assumptions. The results are applied to discrepancy functionals given by Bregman distances and especially to the Kullback-Leibler divergence.Comment: To appear in Inverse Problem

    Between the Post and the Com-Post:Examining the Postdigital ‘Work’ of a Prefix

    In examining the work of the prefix ‘post’, we aim to contribute to the current postdigital dialogue. Our paper does not provide a rationale for the use of ‘postdigital’ in the title of this journal: that has been thoroughly explored elsewhere. We want instead to consider the work the prefix might do. We look at ‘post’, as it appears to ‘act’ in the terms of ‘postmodernism’ and ‘posthumanism’, suggesting that modernism and humanism are in need of questioning and reworking. We also examine what gets ‘post-ed’, or sometimes ‘com-posted’. (Com- is another interesting prefix, meaning ‘with’.) We then consider how these inquiries inform our understanding of a ‘postdigital reality’ that humans now inhabit. We understand this as a space of learning, struggle, and hope, where ‘old’ and ‘new’ media are now ‘cohabiting artefacts’ that enmesh with the economy, politics and culture. In entering this postdigital age, there really is no turning back from a convergence of the traditional and the digital. However, this is not simply a debate about technological and non-technological media. The postdigital throws up new challenges and possibilities across all aspects of social life. We believe this opens up new avenues too, for considering ways that discourse (language-in-use) shapes how we experience the postdigital

    A qualitative study of stakeholders' perspectives on the social network service environment

    Over two billion people are using the Internet at present, assisted by the mediating activities of software agents which deal with the diversity and complexity of information. There are, however, ethical issues due to the monitoring-and-surveillance, data mining and autonomous nature of software agents. Considering the context, this study aims to comprehend stakeholders' perspectives on the social network service environment in order to identify the main considerations for the design of software agents in social network services in the near future. Twenty-one stakeholders, belonging to three key stakeholder groups, were recruited using a purposive sampling strategy for unstandardised semi-structured e-mail interviews. The interview data were analysed using a qualitative content analysis method. It was possible to identify three main considerations for the design of software agents in social network services, which were classified into the following categories: comprehensive understanding of users' perception of privacy, user type recognition algorithms for software agent development and existing software agents enhancement

    Predictions for s-Wave and p-Wave Heavy Baryons from Sum Rules and Constituent Quark Model (I): Strong Interactions

    We study the strong interactions of the L=1 orbitally excited baryons with one heavy quark in the framework of the Heavy Hadron Chiral Perturbation Theory. To leading order in the heavy mass expansion, the interaction Lagrangian describing the couplings of these states among themselves and with the ground state heavy baryons contains 46 unknown couplings. We derive sum rules analogous to the Adler-Weisberger sum rule which constrain these couplings and relate them to the couplings of the s-wave heavy baryons. Using a spin 3/2 baryon as a target, we find a sum rule expressing the deviation from the quark model prediction for pion couplings to s-wave states in terms of couplings of the p-wave states. In the constituent quark model these couplings are related and can be expressed in terms of only two reduced matrix elements. Using recent CLEO data on Σc\Sigma_c^{*} and Λc1+\Lambda_{c1}^+ strong decays, we determine some of the unknown couplings in the chiral Lagrangian and the two quark model reduced matrix elements.     Observation of Two Narrow States Decaying into Ξc+γ\Xi_{c}^{+}\gamma and Ξc0γ\Xi_{c}^{0}\gamma

    We report the first observation of two narrow charmed strange baryons decaying to Ξc+γ\Xi_c^+\gamma and Ξc0γ\Xi_c^0\gamma, respectively, using data from the CLEO II detector at CESR. We interpret the observed signals as the Ξc+(csu)\Xi_c^{+\prime}(c{su}) and Ξc0(csd)\Xi_c^{0\prime}(c{sd}), the symmetric partners of the well-established antisymmetric Ξc+(c[su])\Xi_c^+(c[su]) and Ξc0(c[sd])\Xi_c^0(c[sd]). The mass differences M(Ξc+)M(Ξc+)M(\Xi_c^{+\prime})-M(\Xi_c^+) and M(Ξc0)M(Ξc0)M(\Xi_c^{0\prime})-M(\Xi_c^0) are measured to be 107.8±1.7±2.5107.8\pm 1.7\pm 2.5 and 107.0±1.4±2.5MeV/c2107.0\pm 1.4\pm 2.5 MeV/c^2, respectively.Comment: 11 pages, postscript file also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN

    Measurement of the cross-section and charge asymmetry of WW bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at s=8\sqrt{s}=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    This paper presents measurements of the W+μ+νW^+ \rightarrow \mu^+\nu and WμνW^- \rightarrow \mu^-\nu cross-sections and the associated charge asymmetry as a function of the absolute pseudorapidity of the decay muon. The data were collected in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 20.2~\mbox{fb^{-1}}. The precision of the cross-section measurements varies between 0.8% to 1.5% as a function of the pseudorapidity, excluding the 1.9% uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The charge asymmetry is measured with an uncertainty between 0.002 and 0.003. The results are compared with predictions based on next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations with various parton distribution functions and have the sensitivity to discriminate between them.Comment: 38 pages in total, author list starting page 22, 5 figures, 4 tables, submitted to EPJC.
