    Imaging quantitativo cerebrale in pazienti affetti da patologie neurodegenerative con traccianti PiB e FDG marcati con 18-F

    Il numero di casi riguardanti patologie neurodegenerative che colpiscono il sistema nervoso centrale sotto forma di demenza aumenta di anno in anno. Si ha quindi la necessità di individuare la presenza della malattia non solo a livello qualitativo, ovvero tramite la sola diagnosi del medico, ma anche a livello quantitativo, cercando di elaborare un metodo di analisi che tenga conto della variabilità tra individuo e individuo, ma che rimanga applicabile per la maggior parte della popolazione. In questo lavoro di tesi sono stati utilizzati due metodi di analisi statistica di immagini PET cerebrali, denominati SPM e SSP Z-score, al fine di individuare mappe statistiche 3D che evidenzino, con probabilità fissata, le aree del cervello colpite. Entrambe le analisi statistiche si basano su un confronto del paziente con un gruppo di soggetti sani. Le immagini elaborate in questo lavoro di tesi provengono dal database dell'Ospedale di Parma, registrate dallo stesso scanner PET-CT, con l'utilizzo di traccianti diversi, denominati FDG e PiB marcato Fluoro. I due traccianti rilevano uno stato cerebrale anomalo, ma attraverso due indicatori diversi: FDG rende visibile l'afflusso sanguigno all'interno del cervello, legato al metabolismo; il PiB invece è in grado di rilevare i depositi di beta-amiloide, una proteina che, legandosi ai tessuti cerebrali, forma delle placche in grado di bloccare la connessioni tra neuroni. I traccianti sono legati al radionuclide 18F. Le analisi sono state effettuate principalmente su pazienti con morbo di Alzheimer utilizzando i due metodi di analisi precedentemente introdotti. Sono anche stati confrontati attraverso SPM due gruppi di pazienti con iniziale demenza lieve, che nel tempo si è evoluta in morbo di Alzheimer in alcuni casi, mentre in altri non sono state riscontrate variazioni. Infine, tramite un approccio SPM, sono stati valutati due template diversi per determinare quale potesse essere considerato migliore per l'analisi quantitativa

    Treatment of Y-T Humeral Fractures with Polyaxial Locking Plate System (PAX) in 14 Dogs

    The aim of this study is to report the results and to review the outcome of 14 cases of Y-T humeral fractures repair using paired polyaxial locking system (PAX) plates through a combined medial and lateral approach. Fourteen consecutive dogs, with traumatic humeral Y-T fractures, met the inclusion criteria. This study includes signalment, preoperative radiographs, type of implants, radiographic bone healing assessment, complications, range of motion (ROM) of the elbow and limb function evaluated at 120 days after surgery. Postoperative radiographs revealed adequate anatomic reconstruction, and in all cases, bone healing has been achieved. No implant failure was observed. Functional outcome was excellent in 7 dogs (no lameness and preserved ROM), good in 4 (slight lameness and moderate ROM reduction) and discrete in 2 (mild lameness and severe ROM reduction). Complications were encountered in 2/14 patients with implant-associated infection resolved after long-term antibiotic treatment and implant removal. The PAX system is shown to be a valid alternative for the treatment of Y-T humeral fractures, offering the benefit of polyaxial insertion of locking screws. The possibility of angle locking screws is helpful in the distal humeral bicondylar fractures, providing additional options for screw placement in juxtarticular fractures, avoiding fracture lines or other implants

    Benchmarking of graphene-based materials: Real commercial products versus ideal graphene

    There are tens of industrial producers claiming to sell graphene and related materials (GRM), mostly as solid powders. Recently the quality of commercial GRM has been questioned, and procedures for GRM quality control were suggested using Raman Spectroscopy or Atomic Force Microscopy. Such techniques require dissolving the sample in solvents, possibly introducing artefacts. A more pragmatic approach is needed, based on fast measurements and not requiring any assumption on GRM solubility. To this aim, we report here an overview of the properties of commercial GRM produced by selected companies in Europe, USA and Asia. We benchmark: (A) size, (B) exfoliation grade and (C) oxidation grade of each GRM versus the ones of \u27ideal\u27 graphene and, most importantly, versus what reported by the producer. In contrast to previous works, we report explicitly the names of the GRM producers and we do not re-dissolve the GRM in solvents, but only use techniques compatible with industrial powder metrology. A general common trend is observed: Products having low defectivity (%sp 2 bonds >95%) feature low surface area (<200 m 2 g -1 ), while highly exfoliated GRM show a lower sp 2 content, demonstrating that it is still challenging to exfoliate GRM at industrial level without adding defects

    Evaluation of Modified PEG-Anilinoquinazoline Derivatives as Potential Agents for EGFR Imaging in Cancer by Small Animal PET

    Purpose: The in vivo evaluation of three modified polyethylene glycol (PEG)-anilinoquinazoline derivatives labeled with 124 I, 18 F, and 11 C as potential positron emission tomography (PET) bioprobes for visualizing epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in cancer using small animal PET. Procedures: Xenograft mice with the human glioblastoma cell lines U138MG (lacking EGFR expression) and U87MG.wtEGFR (transfected with an overexpressing human wild-type EGFR gene) were used. Static and dynamic PET imaging was conducted for all three PEGylated compounds. Tumor necrosis, microvessel density, and EGFR levels were evaluated by histopathology and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: Nineteen animal models were generated (two U138MG, three U87MG, 14 with both U138MG and U87MG bilateral masses). In static images, a slight increase in tracer uptake was observed in tumors, but in general, there was no retention of tracer uptake over time and no difference in uptake between U138MG and U87MG masses. In addition, no significant uptake was demonstrated in dynamic scans of the 18 F-PEG tracer. No necrosis was present except in four animals. MVD was 9.6 and 48 microvessels/×400 field in the U138GM and U87GM masses

    The Virgo detector reached during the past science run a sensitivity very close to the design one. During the last year the detector has been improved by suspending the main interferometer mirrors with monolithic fibers, with the goal of reducing the thermal noise contribution and testing the new technology. At the same time the design of the next detector improvements are on-going and they will be implemented during the construction of Advanced Virgo

    The population of merging compact binaries inferred using gravitational waves through GWTC-3

    We report on the population properties of 76 compact binary mergers detected with gravitational waves below a false alarm rate of 1 per year through GWTC-3. The catalog contains three classes of binary mergers: BBH, BNS, and NSBH mergers. We infer the BNS merger rate to be between 10 Gpc3yr1\rm{Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1}} and 1700 Gpc3yr1\rm{Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1}} and the NSBH merger rate to be between 7.8 Gpc3yr1\rm{Gpc^{-3}\, yr^{-1}} and 140 Gpc3yr1\rm{Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1}} , assuming a constant rate density versus comoving volume and taking the union of 90% credible intervals for methods used in this work. Accounting for the BBH merger rate to evolve with redshift, we find the BBH merger rate to be between 17.9 Gpc3yr1\rm{Gpc^{-3}\, yr^{-1}} and 44 Gpc3yr1\rm{Gpc^{-3}\, yr^{-1}} at a fiducial redshift (z=0.2). We obtain a broad neutron star mass distribution extending from 1.20.2+0.1M1.2^{+0.1}_{-0.2} M_\odot to 2.00.3+0.3M2.0^{+0.3}_{-0.3} M_\odot. We can confidently identify a rapid decrease in merger rate versus component mass between neutron star-like masses and black-hole-like masses, but there is no evidence that the merger rate increases again before 10 MM_\odot. We also find the BBH mass distribution has localized over- and under-densities relative to a power law distribution. While we continue to find the mass distribution of a binary's more massive component strongly decreases as a function of primary mass, we observe no evidence of a strongly suppressed merger rate above 60M\sim 60 M_\odot. The rate of BBH mergers is observed to increase with redshift at a rate proportional to (1+z)κ(1+z)^{\kappa} with κ=2.91.8+1.7\kappa = 2.9^{+1.7}_{-1.8} for z1z\lesssim 1. Observed black hole spins are small, with half of spin magnitudes below χi0.25\chi_i \simeq 0.25. We observe evidence of negative aligned spins in the population, and an increase in spin magnitude for systems with more unequal mass ratio
