    Social drivers of rural forest dynamics: A multi-scale approach combining ethnography, geomatic and mental model analysis

    Farm forests and trees outside forests (i.e.,‘rural forests’) are key components for the sustainability of agricultural landscapes. Farmers are the main managers of rural forests and their practices vary according to a range of individual and collective factors. This diversity in management practices challenges the understanding of landscape patterns and dynamics, in particular at local and regional scales. In this study, we combined forest mapping over 150 years, ethnographic investigations and mental models to investigate the social drivers of rural forests in a French case study. Results showed a stability of woodlands and groves, favored by the social organization system, i.e., a self-reliance and house-centered system. Recent tree encroachment in abandoned lands–caused by rural exodus and the intensification of agriculture–resulted in a spread of woodlands. In addition, a shift from family-based to market-oriented woodland management was observed, contributing to the homogenization of forest management practices. Hedgerows declined but with contrasted trends according to their location and adjacent land uses: in-farm hedgerows that obstructed mechanization declined, whereas boundary hedgerows that assisted in the maintenance of farmers’ estates were reinforced. Scattered trees were considered of little interest by farmers and declined. This study achieved an understanding of rural forest patterns and underlying social drivers. Mental models provided a basis for exploring the tradeoffs between ecosystem services and disservices operated by farmers. They also revealed differences between scientific and farmer classifications of trees outside forests. Mental models constitute a promising tool for reinforcing bonds between the social and natural sciences

    Pour cette nouvelle édition, la Fondation de France s’associe avec la Fondation Léopold Mayer pour le Progrès de l’Homme qui appuie l’expérience menée sur le domaine de la Bergerie de Villarceaux, pour aborder plus spécialement le thème « Agroforesteries et grandes cultures ». Le centre écodéveloppement de Villarceaux avait accueilli en septembre 2011 les 4èmes rencontres nationales Arbres et Haies champêtres. L’Afac-Agroforesteries participera à plusieurs titres à ces rencontres : comme discutant lors des tables-rondes, pour l’animation de plusieurs ateliers de terrain. Les objectifs de ces journées sont : rassembler les acteurs de l’agroforesterie pour favoriser échanges et croisement des savoirs, notamment entre terrain et recherche, identifier les atouts et freins au déploiement de systèmes grandes cultures en agroforesterie et les besoins de production de connaissances, contribuer à recueillir pratiques et questionnements sur les associations agroforestières entre arbres, haies et grandes cultures

    Rethinking business models for innovation

    One of the major challenges confronted by those in charge of technological innovation involves anticipating the value creation model sufficiently early on,in a highly uncertain context both as far as the technology itself is concerned and the potential market. Today, in many industrial sectors, the innovation boundaries have moved towards projects that are more and more exploratory and fuzzy. The simple optimisation of linear processes of the "stage-gate" type is no longer sufficient to build sustainable competitive advantages. The notion of Business Models, when applied to innovation, enables us to describe how a company creates value through innovation, generally within a business ecosystem, and how the value will be distributed between the actors involved. The authors of this book believe that the notions of Business Modelling and value creation are key to all the dimensions of successful innovation, whether technology, marketing, organisational or economically based. Rethinking Business Models for Innovation: this title describes the relationship between thinking, modelling, and also field-testing. The book is based on a series of nine recent cases of innovation involving company managers, often assisted by researchers (the co-authors of each chapter), and how they built and formalised their Business Models and then tested their strategies. After having discovered the variety of the cases, the reader will understand that every innovation situation generates specific questions about Business Models. However, we feel that we can identify three key issues that arise, more or less, in each of these projects. The chapters in this book build on these issues: the identification of sources of value and revenue models (the notion of value creation), the position of the company in the value-network or ecosystem (the sharing of value) and finally the evolution of Business MoDdels over time (the sustainability and the competitiveness of the company).     Fluorescent and magnetic stellate mesoporous silica for bimodal imaging and magnetic hyperthermia

    There is currently a crucial need of innovative multifunctional nanoparticles combining, in one formulation, imaging and therapy capacities allowing thus an accurate diagnosis and a therapy monitored by imaging. Multimodal imaging will ensure to speed up diagnosis, and to increase its sensitivity, reliability and specificity for a better management of the disease. Combined with a therapeutic action, it will also enable to treat the disease in a specific personalized manner in feedback mode. The mastered design of such bioprobes as well as the demonstration of their efficiency are still challenges to face in nanomedicine. In this work, novel fluorescent and magnetic core–shell nanocomposites have been designed to ensure, in one nanoformulation, bimodal fluorescence and MRI imaging coupled with therapy by magnetic hyperthermia. They consist in the coating of a magnetic iron oxide (IO) core (ca. 18 nm diameter to ensure magnetic hyperthermia) by an original large pore stellate mesoporous silica (STMS) shell to produce uniform and mono-core magnetic core–shell nanocomposites denoted IO@STMS NPs. To confer fluorescence properties, CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) NPs were grafted inside the large pores of the IO@STMS nanocomposites. To provide biocompatibility and opsonization-resistance, a tightly-bound human serum albumin (HSA) coating is added around the nanocomposite using an original IBAM-based strategy. Cellular toxicity and non-specific cell–nanomaterial interactions allowed to determine a concentration range for safe application of these NPs. Cellular endosomes containing spontaneously-uptaken NPs displayed strong and photostable QD fluorescence signals while magnetic relaxivity measurements confirm their suitability as contrast agent for MRI. HeLa cell-uptaken NPs exposed to a magnetic field of 100 kHz and 357 Gauss (or 28.5 kA m−1) display an outstanding 65% cell death at a very low iron concentration (1.25 μg Fe mL−1), challenging current magnetic hyperthermia nanosystems. Furthermore, at the particularly demanding conditions of clinical use with low frequency and amplitude field (100 kHz, 117 Gauss or 9.3 kA m−1), magnetic hyperthermia combined with the delivery of a chemotherapeutic drug, doxorubicin, allowed 46% cell death, which neither the drug nor the NPs alone yielded, evidencing thus the synergistic effect of this combined treatment.Facultad de Ciencias VeterinariasInstituto de Investigaciones Fisicoquímicas Teóricas y AplicadasInstituto de Física La Plat

    Antimicrobial resistance among migrants in Europe: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    BACKGROUND: Rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are rising globally and there is concern that increased migration is contributing to the burden of antibiotic resistance in Europe. However, the effect of migration on the burden of AMR in Europe has not yet been comprehensively examined. Therefore, we did a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify and synthesise data for AMR carriage or infection in migrants to Europe to examine differences in patterns of AMR across migrant groups and in different settings. METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed, and Scopus with no language restrictions from Jan 1, 2000, to Jan 18, 2017, for primary data from observational studies reporting antibacterial resistance in common bacterial pathogens among migrants to 21 European Union-15 and European Economic Area countries. To be eligible for inclusion, studies had to report data on carriage or infection with laboratory-confirmed antibiotic-resistant organisms in migrant populations. We extracted data from eligible studies and assessed quality using piloted, standardised forms. We did not examine drug resistance in tuberculosis and excluded articles solely reporting on this parameter. We also excluded articles in which migrant status was determined by ethnicity, country of birth of participants' parents, or was not defined, and articles in which data were not disaggregated by migrant status. Outcomes were carriage of or infection with antibiotic-resistant organisms. We used random-effects models to calculate the pooled prevalence of each outcome. The study protocol is registered with PROSPERO, number CRD42016043681. FINDINGS: We identified 2274 articles, of which 23 observational studies reporting on antibiotic resistance in 2319 migrants were included. The pooled prevalence of any AMR carriage or AMR infection in migrants was 25·4% (95% CI 19·1-31·8; I2 =98%), including meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (7·8%, 4·8-10·7; I2 =92%) and antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (27·2%, 17·6-36·8; I2 =94%). The pooled prevalence of any AMR carriage or infection was higher in refugees and asylum seekers (33·0%, 18·3-47·6; I2 =98%) than in other migrant groups (6·6%, 1·8-11·3; I2 =92%). The pooled prevalence of antibiotic-resistant organisms was slightly higher in high-migrant community settings (33·1%, 11·1-55·1; I2 =96%) than in migrants in hospitals (24·3%, 16·1-32·6; I2 =98%). We did not find evidence of high rates of transmission of AMR from migrant to host populations. INTERPRETATION: Migrants are exposed to conditions favouring the emergence of drug resistance during transit and in host countries in Europe. Increased antibiotic resistance among refugees and asylum seekers and in high-migrant community settings (such as refugee camps and detention facilities) highlights the need for improved living conditions, access to health care, and initiatives to facilitate detection of and appropriate high-quality treatment for antibiotic-resistant infections during transit and in host countries. Protocols for the prevention and control of infection and for antibiotic surveillance need to be integrated in all aspects of health care, which should be accessible for all migrant groups, and should target determinants of AMR before, during, and after migration.     The Dichotomous Pattern of IL-12R and IL-23R Expression Elucidates the Role of IL-12 and IL-23 in Inflammation

    IL-12 and IL-23 cytokines respectively drive Th1 and Th17 type responses. Yet, little is known regarding the biology of these receptors. As the IL-12 and IL-23 receptors share a common subunit, it has been assumed that these receptors are co-expressed. Surprisingly, we find that the expression of each of these receptors is restricted to specific cell types, in both mouse and human. Indeed, although IL-12Rβ2 is expressed by NK cells and a subset of γδ T cells, the expression of IL-23R is restricted to specific T cell subsets, a small number of B cells and innate lymphoid cells. By exploiting an IL-12- and IL-23-dependent mouse model of innate inflammation, we demonstrate an intricate interplay between IL-12Rβ2 NK cells and IL-23R innate lymphoid cells with respectively dominant roles in the regulation of systemic versus local inflammatory responses. Together, these findings support an unforeseen lineage-specific dichotomy in the in vivo role of both the IL-12 and IL-23 pathways in pathological inflammatory states, which may allow more accurate dissection of the roles of these receptors in chronic inflammatory diseases in humans
