Doubts about Aid
SUMMARY Scepticism is expressed in this article about the effectiveness of foreign capital in increasing the level of investment and accelerating growth. Instead it is suggested that capital inflows often depress the domestic savings rate and reduce the productivity of investment and thus can retard the rate of growth. Data from a dozen countries, biased toward the low?income economies, illustrate the argument. It is further suggested that there is little evidence that aid in practice has helped to reduce poverty and inequality or to promote justice and freedom. We may well do more to help the poor in future by discounting long term programmes of foreign assistance. The relationship between religious involvement and clinical status of patients with bipolar disorder
Cruz M, Pincus HA, Welsh DE, Greenwald D, Lasky E, Kilbourne AM. The relationship between religious involvement and clinical status of patients with bipolar disorder. Bipolar Disord 2010: 12: 68â76. © 2010 The Authors. Journal compilation © 2010 John Wiley & Sons A/S.Religion and spirituality are important coping strategies in depression but have been rarely studied within the context of bipolar disorder. The present study assessed the association between different forms of religious involvement and the clinical status of individuals treated for bipolar disorder.A cross-sectional observation study of follow-up data from a large cohort study of patients receiving care for bipolar disorder (n = 334) at an urban Veterans Affairs mental health clinic was conducted. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed to assess the association between public (frequency of church attendance), private (frequency of prayer/meditation), as well as subjective forms (influence of beliefs on life) of religious involvement and mixed, manic, depressed, and euthymic states when demographic, anxiety, alcohol abuse, and health indicators were controlled.Multivariate analyses found significant associations between higher rates of prayer/meditation and participants in a mixed state [odds ratio (OR) = 1.29; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.10â1.52, chi square = 9.42, df = 14, p < 0.05], as well as lower rates of prayer/meditation and participants who were euthymic (OR = 0.84; 95% CI = 0.72â0.99, chi square = 4.60, df = 14, p < 0.05). Depression and mania were not associated with religious involvement.Compared to patients with bipolar disorder in depressed, manic, or euthymic states, patients in mixed states have more active private religious lives. Providers should assess the religious activities of individuals with bipolar disorder in mixed states and how they may complement/deter ongoing treatment. Future longitudinal studies linking bipolar states, religious activities, and treatment-seeking behaviors are needed.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/78616/1/j.1399-5618.2009.00772.x.pd
Soil carbon stock impacts following reversion of Miscanthus x giganteus and short rotation coppice willow commercial plantations into arable cropping
There are posited links between the establishment of perennial bioenergy, such as Short Rotation Coppice (SRC) willow and Miscanthus x giganteus, on low carbon soils and enhanced soil C sequestration. Sequestration provides additional climate mitigation, however, few studies have explored impacts on soil C stocks of bioenergy crop removal, thus the permanence of any sequestered C is unclear. This uncertainty has led some authors to question the handling of soil C stocks with carbon accounting e.g. through LCA. Here we provide additional data for this debate, reporting on the soil C impacts of the reversion (removal and return) to arable cropping of commercial SRC willow and Miscanthus across four sites in the UK, two for each bioenergy crop, with 8 reversions nested within these sites. Using a pairedâsite approach, soil C stocks (0â1 m) were compared between 3 and 7 years after bioenergy crop removal. Impacts on soil C stocks varied, ranging from an increase of 70.16 ± 10.81 Mg C haâ1 7 years after reversion of SRC willow to a decrease of 33.38 ± 5.33 Mg C haâ1 3 years after reversion of Miscanthus compared to paired arable land. The implications for carbon accounting will depend on the method used to allocate this stock change between current and past land use. However, with, published life cycle assessment values for the lifetime C reduction provided by these crops ranging from 29.50 to 138.55 Mg C haâ1, the magnitude of these changes in stock are significant. We discuss the potential underlying mechanisms driving variability in soil C stock change, including the age of bioenergy crop at removal, removal methods, and differences in the recalcitrant of the crop residues, and highlight the need to design management methods to limit negative outcomes
The Polyakov action on the supertorus
A consistent method for obtaining a well-defined Polyakov action on the
supertorus is presented. This method uses the covariantization of derivative
operators and enables us to construct a Polyakov action which is globally
defined.Comment: 15 pages LaTe
A Class of Topological Actions
We review definitions of generalized parallel transports in terms of
Cheeger-Simons differential characters. Integration formulae are given in terms
of Deligne-Beilinson cohomology classes. These representations of parallel
transport can be extended to situations involving distributions as is
appropriate in the context of quantized fields.Comment: 41 pages, no figure
New ILAE versus previous clinical status epilepticus semiologic classification: Analysis of a hospital-based cohort.
OBJECTIVES: In 2015, the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) issued a new status epilepticus (SE) classification, including a detailed semiologic axis. This study assesses frequencies of SE forms in a cohort of adult patients, and explores differences and practical implications as compared to a seizure-type-bound classification.
METHODS: The prospective adult SE registry of the Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) was considered over 5 years (2011-2015); each SE episode was retrospectively reclassified for its semiology according to the new ILAE scheme. Mortality rates were retrieved for each subgroup of SE.
RESULTS: Among 488 SE episodes, according to the seizure-type-bound classification, 230 (47%) had a generalized convulsive, and 29 (6%) had a nonconvulsive SE in coma; both categories overlapped almost perfectly between the two classifications. However, the 84 episodes with focal SE without consciousness impairment and the 141 episodes with consciousness impairment were each translated into two major (and five sub-) categories of the new ILAE classification, having markedly different mortality rates. In addition, of 140 episodes labeled as focal motor SE according to the new classification, 54% had concomitant consciousness impairment, whereas 46% did not; again, mortality rates were heterogeneous.
SIGNIFICANCE: Although generalized convulsive and nonconvulsive SE in coma show an almost perfect correspondence across SE semiologic classifications, focal SE is markedly heterogeneous and appears to be better reflected in the new classification, offering more clinically relevant subdivisions, also differing in mortality rates. This refined knowledge may allow the development of clinical prognostic scores that are more precise than existing tools, and should be taken into account for epidemiologic studies
Pathological and ecological host consequences of infection by an introduced fish parasite
The infection consequences of the introduced cestode fish parasite Bothriocephalus acheilognathi were studied in a cohort of wild, young-of-the-year common carp Cyprinus carpio that lacked co-evolution with the parasite. Within the cohort, parasite prevalence was 42% and parasite burdens were up to 12% body weight. Pathological changes within the intestinal tract of parasitized carp included distension of the gut wall, epithelial compression and degeneration, pressure necrosis and varied inflammatory changes. These were most pronounced in regions containing the largest proportion of mature proglottids. Although the body lengths of parasitized and non-parasitized fish were not significantly different, parasitized fish were of lower body condition and reduced weight compared to non-parasitized conspecifics. Stable isotope analysis (ÎŽ15N and ÎŽ13C) revealed trophic impacts associated with infection, particularly for ÎŽ15N where values for parasitized fish were significantly reduced as their parasite burden increased. In a controlled aquarium environment where the fish were fed ad libitum on an identical food source, there was no significant difference in values of ÎŽ15N and ÎŽ13C between parasitized and non-parasitized fish. The growth consequences remained, however, with parasitized fish growing significantly slower than non-parasitized fish, with their feeding rate (items sâ1) also significantly lower. Thus, infection by an introduced parasite had multiple pathological, ecological and trophic impacts on a host with no experience of the parasite
Definition and Independent Validation of a Proteomic-Classifier in Ovarian Cancer
Simple Summary: The heterogeneity of epithelial ovarian cancer and its associated molecular biological characteristics are continuously integrated in the development of therapy guidelines. In a next step, future therapy recommendations might also be able to focus on the patient's systemic status, not only the tumor's molecular pattern. Therefore, new methods to identify and validate host-related biomarkers need to be established. Using mass spectrometry, we developed and independently validated a blood-based proteomic classifier, stratifying epithelial ovarian cancer patients into good and poor survival groups. We also determined an age dependence of the prognostic performance of this classifier and its association with important biological processes. This work highlights that, just like molecular markers of the tumor itself, the systemic condition of a patient (partly reflected in proteomic patterns) also influences survival and therapy response and could therefore be integrated into future processes of therapy planning.
Abstract: Mass-spectrometry-based analyses have identified a variety of candidate protein biomarkers that might be crucial for epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) development and therapy response. Comprehensive validation studies of the biological and clinical implications of proteomics are needed to advance them toward clinical use. Using the Deep MALDI method of mass spectrometry, we developed and independently validated (development cohort: n = 199, validation cohort: n = 135) a blood-based proteomic classifier, stratifying EOC patients into good and poor survival groups. We also determined an age dependency of the prognostic performance of this classifier, and our protein set enrichment analysis showed that the good and poor proteomic phenotypes were associated with, respectively, lower and higher levels of complement activation, inflammatory response, and acute phase reactants. This work highlights that, just like molecular markers of the tumor itself, the systemic condition of a patient (partly reflected in proteomic patterns) also influences survival and therapy response in a subset of ovarian cancer patients and could therefore be integrated into future processes of therapy planning
