    Mathematical knowledge and skills expected by higher education in engineering and the social sciences: Implications for high school mathematics curriculum

    One important function of school mathematics curriculum is to prepare high school students with the knowledge and skills needed for university education. Identifying them empirically will help making sound decisions about the contents of high school mathematics curriculum. It will also help students to make informed choices in course selection at high school. In this study, we surveyed university faculty members who teach first year university students about the mathematical knowledge and skills that they would like to see in incoming high school graduates. Data were collected from 122 faculty members from social science (history, law, psychology) and engineering departments (electrical/electronics and computer engineering). Participants were asked to indicate which high school mathematics topics and skills they thought were important to be successful at university education in their field. Results were compared across social science and engineering departments. Implications were drawn for curriculum specialists, students, and mathematics educators. © 2015 by iSER

    Human semantic parsing for person re-identification

    Person re-identification is a challenging task mainly dueto factors such as background clutter, pose, illuminationand camera point of view variations. These elements hinder the process of extracting robust and discriminative representations, hence preventing different identities from being successfully distinguished. To improve the representation learning, usually local features from human body partsare extracted. However, the common practice for such aprocess has been based on bounding box part detection.In this paper, we propose to adopt human semantic parsing which, due to its pixel-level accuracy and capabilityof modeling arbitrary contours, is naturally a better alternative. Our proposed SPReID integrates human semanticparsing in person re-identification and not only considerably outperforms its counter baseline, but achieves stateof-the-art performance. We also show that, by employinga simple yet effective training strategy, standard populardeep convolutional architectures such as Inception-V3 andResNet-152, with no modification, while operating solelyon full image, can dramatically outperform current stateof-the-art.     Enflasyon öngörülerinin elde edilmesi önemli bir ekonomik problemdir.Öngörülerin daha doğru elde edilmesi daha doğru kararlara neden olacaktır. T.C.Merkez bankası her yılın belirli dönemlerinde enflasyon raporları yayınlamaktadır.Raporlarda enflasyon beklentisi anketi sonuçları yer almaktadır. Bu çalışmada tüketicifiyat endeksi yüksek dereceli bulanık zaman serisi yaklaşımı ile öngörülmüştür. Yüksekdereceli bulanık zaman serisi modelinde ilişkilerin belirlenmesi yapay sinir ağları ileyapılmaktadır. Tüketici fiyat endeksi zaman serisi, ayrıca literatürde yer alan bazıbulanık zaman serisi yaklaşımları ile tahmin edilerek, öngörü doğruluğu açısından T.C.Merkez Bankası enflasyon beklentisi anketi sonuçları ile karşılaştırılmıştır. To obtain inflation forecasts is an important economic issue. The moreaccurate forecasts we get implies the more precise decisions we make. The central Bank reports inflation rates in certain periods of every year. In this reports the results ofinflation expectation survey are presented. In this study we use an approach in whichrelationship is determined by artificial neural network in high order fuzzy time seriesmodel. Time series of consumer price index is estimated by both the artificial neuralnetwork based method and some fuzzy approaches which is common in the literature.The results are compared to the results of inflation expectation survey analysisconducted by Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey in the aspect of forecastsaccuracy

    Halka açık olmayan firmaların değerinin tespitinde, mali tablolardan yola çıkılarak bir takım önermeler ve varsayımlar altında değerin tespiti mümkün olabilmektedir. Ancak, bu firmaların özsermaye maliyetlerinin tespitinde önemli bir sorunla karşılaşılmaktadır. Halka açık olmayan firmaların özsermaye maliyetleri Sermaye Varlıklarını Fiyatlandırma Modeli (Capital Assets Pricing Model-CAPM) kullanılarak hesaplanmak istendiğinde, beta katsayılarının tespitinde zorluklar yaşanmaktadır. Çalışmada, bu zorluk dikkate alınarak, öncelikle halka açık firmaların mali tablo değişkenleri ile beta katsayıları arasındaki ilişki regresyon modeli yardımıyla tespit edilmeye çalışılmaktadır. Daha sonrasında, ilgili model halka açık olan firmaların verileri kullanılarak test edilmekte ve halka açık olmayan firmalar üzerinde uygulanmaktadır

    On the Basic Affective Dimensions of Japanese Onomatopoeia and the Basic Level of Japanese Phonesthemes

    音感素は、音素と形態素の間のレベルに位置する、音象徴における基本単位である。英語やスウェーデン語などにおいては、二子音、あるいは三子音からなる多くの音感素の例が報告されている(Hinton, Nichols and Ohala, 1994; Abelin, 1999)。日本語は、二子音、三子音からなる音のパターンを欠いているので、そのような音感素も存在しない。Hamano(1998)は、日本語における各子音と各母音を音感素に設定し、日本語におけるオノマトペを組織的に分析している。Hamanoの分析は大変興味深いが、音感素と感性的意味の選択は分析者の直感によっている。この予備的研究で我々は、こうした基本問題に関する経験的な証拠を提供し、これを日本語における音象徴全般の問題に関連づけることを試みる。1)60のオノマトペが用いられた。オノマトペはすべてCIVIC2V2形式で、意味は感情に関連するものだった。12人の被験者がこれらのオノマトペを24の形容詞対により評定した。形容詞対24次元空間における60のオノマトペ間の距離行列がMDSにより分析された。2次元解が採用された。第1次元は明るさと、第2次元は硬さと最も高い相関を示した。2)157の日本語の拍が用いられた。99名の被験者がこれらの拍の明るさを、100名の被験者がこれらの拍の硬さを評定した。67の拍の評定平均値がカテゴリー回帰分析によって分析された。従属変数は明るさと硬さであった。独立変数は子音と母音だった。重相関係数は、明るさと硬さともにほぼ1であった。拍への影響は、明るさと硬さともに子音の方が大きかった。Phonesthemes are the basic unit in sound symbolism, which lies between phonemes and morphemes. In English or Swedish, there are many phonesthemes that consist of two or three consonants (Hinton, Nichols and Ohala, 1994; Abelin, 1999). Japanese does not have such phonesthemes, because it lacks such sound patterns. Hamano (1998) set each Japanese consonant and vowel as a phonestheme and analyzed Japanese onomatopoeia systematically. Her analysis is interesting, yet the selection of phonesthemes and the affective meaning depends on her intuition. In this preliminary study we tried to provide empirical evidence concerning these basic problems and relate these results to the sound symbolism of Japanese in general. 1) 60 onomatopoeia were used. All onomatopoeia were C1V1C2V2 type and related to emotion. 12 subjects rated these onomatopoeia with 24 adjective pairs. Distances among the 60 onomatopoeia in 24 dimensional adjective space were analyzed by MDS. 2 dimensions were adopted. The 1st dimension had the highest correlation with brightness, and the 2nd dimension had the highest correlation with hardness. 2) 157 Japanese morae were used. 99 subjects rated the brightness of these morae and 100 subjects rated the hardness of these morae. Average ratings were analyzed by categorical multiple regression analysis. Dependent variables were averaged brightness or hardness. Independent variables were consonants and vowels. The multiple correlation coefficients for both brightness and hardness were near 1. Consonants had bigger effects on morae than vowels.感情科学の展

    Luminescence and optical properties of relaxor ferroelectrics

    The optical absorption spectrum, luminescence and photoconductivity on single crystals PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3 and on ceramics Pb0.91La0.09(Zr0.65Ti0.35)O 3 are investigated in the wide temperature range. The luminescence spectrum correlates with the photoconductivity spectrum. The position of the maximum of the luminescent emission spectrum indicates the origin of the charge carriers emitted from the defect centers. On the basis of the data the properties of the local centers are determined, and the phenomenological approach to the relaxor theory is discussed

    Effects of air abrasion with alumina or glass beads on surface characteristics of CAD/CAM composite materials and the bond strength of resin cements

    ABSTRACT Objective The study aimed to evaluate effects of air abrasion with alumina or glass beads on bond strengths of resin cements to CAD/CAM composite materials. Material and Methods CAD/CAM composite block materials [Cerasmart (CS) and Block HC (BHC)] were pretreated as follows: (a) no treatment (None), (b) application of a ceramic primer (CP), (c) alumina-blasting at 0.2 MPa (AB), (d) AB followed by CP (AB+CP), and (e) glass-beads blasting at 0.4 MPa (GBB) followed by CP (GBB+CP). The composite specimens were bonded to resin composite disks using resin cements [G-CEM Cerasmart (GCCS) and ResiCem (RC)]. The bond strengths after 24 h (TC 0) and after thermal cycling (TC 10,000 at 4–60°C) were measured by shear tests. Three-way ANOVA and the Tukey compromise post hoc tests were used to analyze statistically significant differences between groups (α=0.05). Results For both CAD/CAM composite materials, the None group exhibited a significant decrease in bond strength after TC 10,000 (p0.05). The AB+CP group showed a significantly higher bond strength after TC 10,000 than did the AB group for RC (p<0.05), but not for GCCS. The GBB+CP group showed the highest bond strength for both thermal cyclings (p<0.05). Conclusions Air abrasion with glass beads was more effective in increasing bond durability between the resin cements and CAD/CAM composite materials than was using an alumina powder and a CP

    Slaughter weight rather than sex affects carcass cuts and tissue composition of Bisaro pigs

    Carcass cuts and tissue composition were assessed in Bisaro pigs (n=64) from two sexes (31 gilts and 33 entire males) reared until three target slaughter body-weights (BW) means: 17 kg, 32 kg, and 79 kg. Dressing percentage and backfat thickness increased whereas carcass shrinkage decreased with increasing BW. Slaughter weight affected most of the carcass cut proportions, except shoulder and thoracic regions. Bone proportion decreased linearly with increasing slaughter BW, while intermuscular and subcutaneous adipose tissue depots increased concomitantly. Slaughter weight increased the subcutaneous adipose tissue proportion but this impaired intramuscular and intermuscular adipose tissues in the loin primal. The sex of the pigs minimally affected the carcass composition, as only the belly weight and the subcutaneous adipose tissue proportions were greater in gilts than in entire males.
