    Field-theoretical approach to particle oscillations in absorbing matter

    The abab oscillations in absorbing matter are considered. The standard model based on optical potential does not describe the total abab transition probability as well as the channel corresponding to absorption of the bb-particle. We calculate directly the off-diagonal matrix element in the framework of field-theoretical approach. Contrary to one-particle model, the final state absorption does not tend to suppress the channels mentioned above or, similarly, calculation with hermitian Hamiltonian leads to increase the corresponding values. The model reproduces all the results on the particle oscillations, however it is oriented to the description of the above-mentioned channels. Also we touch on the problem of infrared singularities.     New "Square Root" Model of Lepton Family Cyclic Symmetry

    Following the newly formulated notion of form invariance of the neutrino mass matrix, a complete model of leptons is constructed. It is based on a specific unitary 3 X 3 matrix U in family space, such that U^2 is the simple discrete symmetry nu_e to -nu_e, nu_mu to nu_tau. Thus U also generates the cyclic group Z_4. The charged-lepton mass matrix is nearly diagonal while the neutrino mass matrix is of the form suitable for explaining maximal (large) mixing in atmospheric (solar) neutrino oscillations in the context of three nearly degenerate neutrino masses.     Nearly Bi-Maximal Neutrino Mixing, Muon g-2 Anomaly and Lepton-Flavor-Violating Processes

    We interpret the newly observed muon g-2 anomaly in the framework of a leptonic Higgs doublet model with nearly degenerate neutrino masses and nearly bi-maximal neutrino mixing. Useful constraints are obtained on the rates of lepton-flavor-violating rare decays τμγ\tau \to \mu \gamma, μeγ\mu \to e \gamma and τeγ\tau \to e \gamma as well as the μ\mu-ee conversion ratio RμeR_{\mu e}. We find that Γ(μeγ)\Gamma (\mu \to e \gamma), Γ(τeγ)\Gamma (\tau \to e \gamma) and RμeR_{\mu e} depend crucially on possible non-zero but samll values of the neutrino mixing matrix element Ve3V_{e3}, and they are also sensitive to the Dirac-type CP-violating phase. In particular, we show that Γ(τμγ)/mτ5\Gamma (\tau \to \mu \gamma)/m^5_\tau, Γ(μeγ)/mμ5\Gamma (\mu \to e \gamma)/m^5_\mu and Γ(τeγ)/mτ5\Gamma (\tau \to e \gamma)/m^5_\tau are approximately in the ratio 1:2Ve32:2Ve321: 2|V_{e3}|^2: 2|V_{e3}|^2 if Ve3|V_{e3}| is much larger than O(102){\cal O}(10^{-2}), and in the ratio 2(Δmatm2)2:(Δmsun2)2:(Δmsun2)22 (\Delta m^2_{\rm atm})^2: (\Delta m^2_{\rm sun})^2:(\Delta m^2_{\rm sun})^2 if Ve3|V_{e3}| is much lower than O(103){\cal O}(10^{-3}), where Δmatm2\Delta m^2_{\rm atm} and Δmsun2\Delta m^2_{\rm sun} are the corresponding mass-squared differences of atmospheric and solar neutrino oscillations.Comment: LaTex 6 pages (2 PS figures).     When LEP and Tevatron combined with WMAP and XENON100 shed light on the nature of Dark Matter

    Recently, several astrophysical data or would-be signals has been observed in different dark-matter oriented experiments. In each case, one could fit the data at the price of specific nature of the coupling between the Standard Model (SM) particles and a light Dark Matter candidate: hadrophobic (INTEGRAL, PAMELA) or leptophobic (WMAP Haze, dijet anomalies of CDF, FERMI Galactic Center observation). In this work, we show that when one takes into account the more recent LEP and Tevatron analysis, a light thermal fermionic Dark Matte (\lesssim 10 GeV) that couples to electrons is mainly ruled out if one combines the analysis with WMAP constraints. We also study the special case of scalar dark matter, using a mono-photon events simulation to constrain the coupling of dark matter to electron.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

    The ZZ' kinetic mixing in the light of the recent direct and indirect dark matter searches

    Several constructions, of stringy origins or not, generate abelian gauge extensions of the Standard Model (SM). Even if the particles of the SM are not charged under this extra U(1)U'(1), one cannot avoid the presence of a kinetic mixing between U(1)U'(1) and the hypercharge UY(1)U_Y(1). In this work, we constraint drastically this kinetic mixing, taking into account the recent experimental data from accelerator physics, direct detection and indirect detection of dark matter. We show that the region respecting WMAP and experimental constraints is now very narrowed along the pole line where MZD2mDMM_{Z_D}\simeq 2 m_{DM}, ZDZ_D being the gauge boson associated to the extra U(1)U'(1).Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, final version to appear in JCA

    Tolerance and Safety Evaluation in a Large Cohort of Healthy Infants Fed an Innovative Prebiotic Formula: A Randomized Controlled Trial

    Background: the addition of oligosaccharides to infant formula has been shown to mimic some of the beneficial effects of human milk. The aim of the study was to assess the tolerance and safety of a formula containing an innovative mixture of oligosaccharides in early infancy. Methodology/Principal Findings: this study was performed as a multi-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial including healthy term infants. Infants were recruited before the age of 8 weeks, either having started with formula feeding or being fully breast-fed (breastfeeding group). Formula-fed infants were randomized to feeding with a regular formula containing a mixture of neutral oligosaccharides and pectin-derived acidic oligosaccharides (prebiotic formula group) or regular formula without oligosaccharides (control formula group). Growth, tolerance and adverse events were assessed at 8, 16, 24 and 52 weeks of age. The prebiotic and control groups showed similar mean weight, length and head circumference, skin fold thicknesses, arm circumference gains and stool frequency at each study point. As far as the anthropometric parameters are concerned, the prebiotic group and the control group did not attain the values shown by the breastfeeding group at any study point. The skin fold thicknesses assessed in the breastfeeding group at 8 weeks were strikingly larger than those in formula fed infants, whereas at 52 weeks were strikingly smaller. The stool consistency in the prebiotic group was softer than in the control group at 8, 16 and 24 weeks (p <0.001) and closer to that of the breastfeeding group. There was no difference in the incidence of adverse events between the two formula groups. Conclusions: our findings demonstrate the tolerability and the long term safety of a formula containing an innovative mixture of oligosaccharides in a large cohort of healthy infants

    Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

    This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio

    Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS

    The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes.     Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a significant distance from their production point into a final state containing charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the neutralino lifetime.
