Rapid purification of quantum systems by measuring in a feedback-controlled unbiased basis
Rapid-purification by feedback --- specifically, reducing the mean impurity
faster than by measurement alone --- can be achieved by making the eigenbasis
of the density matrix to be unbiased relative to the measurement basis. Here we
further examine the protocol introduced by Combes and Jacobs [Phys.Rev.Lett.
{\bf 96}, 010504 (2006)] involving continuous measurement of the observable
for a -dimensional system. We rigorously re-derive the lower bound
on the achievable speed-up factor, and also an upper bound, namely
, for all feedback protocols that use measurements in unbiased bases.
Finally we extend our results to independent measurements on a register of
qubits, and derive an upper bound on the achievable speed-up factor that

How can existing ground-based profiling instruments improve European weather forecasts?
Observations of profiles of winds, aerosol, clouds, winds, temperature and humidity in the lowest few km of the atmosphere from networks of ceilometers, Doppler wind lidars and microwave radiometers are starting to flow in real time to forecasting centers in Europe.
To realise the promise of improved predictions of hazardous weather such as flash floods, wind storms, fog and poor air quality from high-resolution mesoscale models, the forecast models must be initialized with an accurate representation of the current state of the atmosphere, but the lowest few km are hardly accessible by satellite, especially in dynamically-active conditions. We report on recent European developments in the exploitation of existing ground-based profiling instruments so that they are networked and able to send data in real-time to forecast centers. The three classes of instruments are: (i) Automatic lidars and ceilometers providing backscatter profiles of clouds, aerosols, dust, fog and volcanic ash, the last two being especially important for air traffic control; (ii) Doppler wind lidars deriving profiles of wind, turbulence, wind shear, wind-gusts and low-level jets; and (iii) Microwave radiometers estimating profiles of temperature and humidity in nearly all weather conditions. Twenty-two European countries and fifteen European National Weather Services are collaborating in the project, that involves the implementation of common operating procedures, instrument calibrations, data formats and retrieval algorithms. Currently, data from 220 ceilometers in 17 countries are being distributed in near real-time to national weather forecast centers; this should soon rise to many hundreds. The wind lidars should start delivering real time data in late 2018, and the plan is to incorporate the microwave radiometers in 2019. Snus use and rejection in the USA
OBJECTIVE:
To determine whether snus might become a strategy for reducing the harm associated with cigarette smoking in the USA as appears to be the case in Sweden, we examined receptivity to snus use in two cities with the greatest exposure to the major brands.
METHODS:
A dual frame, telephone survey and a brief mail survey were conducted in 2011 and 2012 in Indianapolis, Indiana and Dallas/Fort Worth Texas. Over 5000 adults completed surveys. Trial, ever use, current use and reasons for using or quitting snus after trial were measured.
RESULTS:
Among male smokers, 29.9% had ever tried snus (CI 22.7 to 38.1) and 4.2% were current users (CI 1.6 to 10.7). Among female smokers, 8.5% ever tried snus (CI 4.4 to 15.7) and current use was unknown. Current use was virtually absent among former smokers and never smokers. A major predictor of any level of snus use was current use of conventional smokeless tobacco. Those who tried and gave up snus cited curiosity (41.3%) and the fact that it was available at low or no cost (30%) as reasons for trial; reasons for not continuing included preferring another form of tobacco (75.1%) and disliking the mouth feel (34.6%). Almost all current snus users indicated that they were trying to cut down on cigarettes, but few (3.9%) were using it to quit smoking entirely.
CONCLUSIONS:
The low rate of adoption of snus suggests that neither the hopes nor the fears surrounding this new product are likely to be realised in the USA with the current marketing patterns
Autoantibodies Produced at the Site of Tissue Damage Provide Evidence of Humoral Autoimmunity in Inclusion Body Myositis
Inclusion body myositis (IBM) belongs to a group of muscle diseases known as the inflammatory myopathies. The presence of antibody-secreting plasma cells in IBM muscle implicates the humoral immune response in this disease. However, whether the humoral immune response actively contributes to IBM pathology has not been established. We sought to investigate whether the humoral immune response in IBM both in the periphery and at the site of tissue damage was directed towards self-antigens. Peripheral autoantibodies present in IBM serum but not control serum recognized self-antigens in both muscle tissue and human-derived cell lines. To study the humoral immune response at the site of tissue damage in IBM patients, we isolated single plasma cells directly from IBM-derived muscle tissue sections and from these cells, reconstructed a series of recombinant immunoglobulins (rIgG). These rIgG, each representing a single muscle-associated plasma cell, were examined for reactivity to self-antigens. Both, flow cytometry and immunoblotting revealed that these rIgG recognized antigens expressed by cell lines and in muscle tissue homogenates. Using a mass spectrometry-based approach, Desmin, a major intermediate filament protein, expressed abundantly in muscle tissue, was identified as the target of one IBM muscle-derived rIgG. Collectively, these data support the view that IBM includes a humoral immune response in both the periphery and at the site of tissue damage that is directed towards self-antigens

PCDH10 Promoter Hypermethylation is Frequent in most Histologic Subtypes of Mature Lymphoid Malignancies and Occurs Early in Lymphomagenesis
PCDH10 is epigenetically inactivated in multiple tumor types; however, studies in mature lymphoid malignancies are limited. Here, we have investigated the presence of promoter hypermethylation of the PCDH10 gene in a large cohort of well-characterized subsets of lymphomas. PCDH10 promoter hypermethylation was identified by methylation-specific PCR in 57 to 100% of both primary B- and T-cell lymphoma specimens and cell lines. These findings were further validated by Sequenom Mass-array analysis. Promoter hypermethylation was also identified in 28.6% cases of reactive follicular hyperpla- sia, more commonly occurring in states of immune deregulation and associated with rare presence of clonal karyotypic aberrations, suggesting that PCDH10 methylation occurs early in lymphomagenesis. PCDH10 expression was down regu- lated via promoter hypermethylation in T- and B-cell lymphoma cell lines. The transcriptional down-regulation resulting from PCDH10 methylation could be restored by pharmacologic inhibition of DNA methyltransferases in cell lines. Both T- and B-cell lymphoma cell lines harboring methylation-mediated inactivation of PCDH10 were resistant to doxorubicin treatment, suggesting that hypermethylation of this gene might contribute to chemotherapy response
Primary care medication safety surveillance with integrated primary and secondary care electronic health records: a cross-sectional study
Introduction: The extent of preventable medication-related hospital admissions and medication-related issues in primary care is significant enough to justify developing decision support systems for medication safety surveillance. The prerequisite for such systems is defining a relevant set of medication safety-related indicators and understanding the influence of both patient and general practice characteristics on medication prescribing and monitoring.
Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate the feasibility of linked primary and secondary care electronic health record data for surveillance of medication safety, examining not only prescribing but also monitoring, and associations with patient- and general practice-level characteristics.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using linked records of patients served by one hospital and over 50 general practices in Salford, UK. Statistical analysis consisted of mixed-effects logistic models, relating prescribing safety indicators to potential determinants.
Results: The overall prevalence (proportion of patients with at least one medication safety hazard) was 5.45 % for prescribing indicators and 7.65 % for monitoring indicators. Older patients and those on multiple medications were at higher risk of prescribing hazards, but at lower risk of missed monitoring. The odds of missed monitoring among all patients were 25 % less for males, 50 % less for patients in practices that provide general practitioner training, and threefold higher in practices serving the most deprived compared with the least deprived areas. Practices with more prescribing hazards did not tend to show more monitoring issues.
Conclusions:Systematic collection, collation, and analysis of linked primary and secondary care records produce plausible and useful information about medication safety for a health system. Medication safety surveillance systems should pay close attention to patient age and polypharmacy with respect to both prescribing and monitoring failures; treat prescribing and monitoring as different statistical processes, rather than a combined measure of prescribing safety; and audit the socio-economic equity of missed monitoring
Measurement of the cross-section and charge asymmetry of bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at TeV with the ATLAS detector
This paper presents measurements of the and cross-sections and the associated charge asymmetry as a
function of the absolute pseudorapidity of the decay muon. The data were
collected in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with
the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to a total integrated luminosity
of 20.2~\mbox{fb^{-1}}. The precision of the cross-section measurements
varies between 0.8% to 1.5% as a function of the pseudorapidity, excluding the
1.9% uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The charge asymmetry is measured
with an uncertainty between 0.002 and 0.003. The results are compared with
predictions based on next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations with various
parton distribution functions and have the sensitivity to discriminate between

Can cognitive insight predict symptom remission in a first episode psychosis cohort?
BACKGROUND:
The outcome of first episode psychosis (FEP) is highly variable and difficult to predict. Cognitive insight measured at illness onset has previously been found to predict psychopathology 12-months later. The aims of this study were to examine whether the prospective relationship between cognitive insight and symptom severity is evident at four-years following FEP and to examine some psychological correlates of cognitive insight.
METHODS:
FEP participants (n = 90) completed the Beck Cognitive Insight Scale (BCIS) at illness onset, and associations between BCIS scores with symptom severity outcomes (4-years after FEP) were assessed. The BCIS scales (self-reflectiveness and self-certainty) were examined as a composite score, and individually compared to other cognitive measures (IQ and jumping to conclusions (JTC) bias).
RESULTS:
Regression analyses revealed that the cognitive insight composite did not predict 4-year symptom remission in this study while the self-reflection subscale of the BCIS predicted severity of symptoms at 4-years. Self-certainty items of the BCIS were not associated with symptom severity. Significant correlations between the JTC bias, self-certainty and IQ were found, but self-reflection did not correlate with these other cognitive measures.
CONCLUSIONS:
Self-reflective capacity is a more relevant and independent cognitive construct than self-certainty for predicting prospective symptom severity in psychosis. Improving self-reflection may be a useful target for early intervention research
Increased Local Retention of Reef Coral Larvae as a Result of Ocean Warming
Climate change will alter many aspects of the ecology of organisms, including dispersal patterns and population connectivity. Understanding these changes is essential to predict future species distributions, estimate potential for adaptation, and design effective networks of protected areas. In marine environments, dispersal is often accomplished by larvae. At higher temperatures, larvae develop faster, but suffer higher mortality, making the effect of temperature on dispersal difficult to predict. Here, we experimentally calibrate the effect of temperature on larval survival and settlement in a dynamic model of coral dispersal. Our findings imply that most reefs globally will experience several-fold increases in local retention of larvae due to ocean warming. This increase will be particularly pronounced for reefs with mean water residence times comparable to the time required for species to become competent to settle. Higher local retention rates strengthen the link between abundance and recruitment at the reef scale, suggesting that populations will be more responsive to local conservation actions. Higher rates of local retention and mortality will weaken connectivity between populations, and thus potentially retard recovery following severe disturbances that substantially deplete local populations. Conversely, on isolated reefs that are dependent on replenishment from local broodstock, increases in local retention may hasten recovery
