    Etanol - aspectos históricos, tecnológicos e ambientais

Tem o escopo de verificar a relevância da inovação frente às descobertas científicas e mudanças em prol necessidades humanas. O tema em questão abordará a indústria sucroalcooleira, especificamente no que diz respeito à sua própria historia a partir de modelos e teorias econômicas já consagradas. Partindo deste contexto, utilizando-se como exemplo empírico a indústria sucroalcooleira, denota-se que este setor tem como indutor de seu desenvolvimento dois processos inovativos. O primeiro deles está sendo promovido pela alta do petróleo, cujos derivados concorrem com os derivados do álcool, que passaram a ter competitividade expressiva após a referida alta. O segundo indutor da inovação que a indústria sucroalcooleira dispõe está ligado ao crescente apelo ambiental, cujos modelos propostos promovem um desenvolvimento sustentável com o meio ambiente. Em suma, a cadeia do álcool e seus derivados, como mostra o trabalho, fornece uma ampla gama de produtos renováveis e menos nocivos ao meio ambiente. Ao longo do desenvolvimento do trabalho também se debate a história do setor no Brasil, apontando-se como se criou a base da competitividade desta indústria e como ela representou a fonte da unidade do que é hoje o território brasileiro. Faz parte também do trabalho um modelo de análise de sustentabilidade, no qual a cadeia do etanol é analisada sob diversos aspectos dentro da ótica do desenvolvimento sustentável

    A network of stress-related genes regulates hypocotyl elongation downstream of selective auxin perception

    The plant hormone auxin, a master coordinator of development, regulates hypocotyl elongation during seedling growth. We previously identified the synthetic molecule RubNeddin 1 (RN1), which induces degradation of the AUXIN/INDOLE-3-ACETIC ACID (AUX/IAA) transcriptional repressors INDOLE-3-ACETIC ACID-INDUCIBLE3 (IAA3) and IAA7 in planta and strongly promotes hypocotyl elongation. In the present study, we show that despite the structural similarity of RN1 to the synthetic auxin 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic-acid (2,4-D), direct treatments with these compounds in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) result in distinct effects, possibly due to enhanced uptake of RN1 and low-level, chronic release of 2,4-D from RN1 in planta. We confirm RN1-induced hypocotyl elongation occurs via specific TRANSPORT INHIBITOR RESISTANT1 (TIR1)/AUXIN SIGNALING F-BOX (AFB) receptor-mediated auxin signaling involving TIR1, AFB2, and AFB5. Using a transcriptome profiling strategy and candidate gene approach, we identify the genes ZINC FINGER OF ARABIDOPSIS THALIANA10 (ZAT10), ARABIDOPSIS TOXICOS EN LEVADURA31 (ATL31), and WRKY DNA-BINDING PROTEIN33 (WRKY33) as being rapidly upregulated by RN1, despite being downregulated by 2,4-D treatment. RN1-induced expression of these genes also occurs via TIR1/AFB-mediated auxin signaling. Our results suggest both hypocotyl elongation and transcription of these genes are induced by RN1 via the promoted degradation of the AUX/IAA transcriptional repressor IAA7. Moreover, these three genes, which are known to be stress-related, act in an inter-dependent transcriptional regulatory network controlling hypocotyl elongation. Together, our results suggest ZAT10, ATL31, and WRKY33 take part in a common gene network regulating hypocotyl elongation in Arabidopsis downstream of a selective auxin perception module likely involving TIR1, AFB2, and AFB5 and inducing the degradation of IAA7

    Anti-Diarrheal Mechanism of the Traditional Remedy Uzara via Reduction of Active Chloride Secretion

    BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The root extract of the African Uzara plant is used in traditional medicine as anti-diarrheal drug. It is known to act via inhibition of intestinal motility, but malabsorptive or antisecretory mechanisms are unknown yet. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: HT-29/B6 cells and human colonic biopsies were studied in Ussing experiments in vitro. Uzara was tested on basal as well as on forskolin- or cholera toxin-induced Cl(-) secretion by measuring short-circuit current (I(SC)) and tracer fluxes of (22)Na(+) and (36)Cl(-). Para- and transcellular resistances were determined by two-path impedance spectroscopy. Enzymatic activity of the Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase and intracellular cAMP levels (ELISA) were measured. KEY RESULTS: In HT-29/B6 cells, Uzara inhibited forskolin- as well as cholera toxin-induced I(SC) within 60 minutes indicating reduced active chloride secretion. Similar results were obtained in human colonic biopsies pre-stimulated with forskolin. In HT-29/B6, the effect of Uzara on the forskolin-induced I(SC) was time- and dose-dependent. Analyses of the cellular mechanisms of this Uzara effect revealed inhibition of the Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase, a decrease in forskolin-induced cAMP production and a decrease in paracellular resistance. Tracer flux experiments indicate that the dominant effect is the inhibition of the Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS: Uzara exerts anti-diarrheal effects via inhibition of active chloride secretion. This inhibition is mainly due to an inhibition of the Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase and to a lesser extent to a decrease in intracellular cAMP responses and paracellular resistance. The results imply that Uzara is suitable for treating acute secretory diarrhea

    Comparing algorithms for automated vessel segmentation in computed tomography scans of the lung: the VESSEL12 study

    The VESSEL12 (VESsel SEgmentation in the Lung) challenge objectively compares the performance of different algorithms to identify vessels in thoracic computed tomography (CT) scans. Vessel segmentation is fundamental in computer aided processing of data generated by 3D imaging modalities. As manual vessel segmentation is prohibitively time consuming, any real world application requires some form of automation. Several approaches exist for automated vessel segmentation, but judging their relative merits is difficult due to a lack of standardized evaluation. We present an annotated reference dataset containing 20 CT scans and propose nine categories to perform a comprehensive evaluation of vessel segmentation algorithms from both academia and industry. Twenty algorithms participated in the VESSEL12 challenge, held at International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI) 2012. All results have been published at the VESSEL12 website http://vessel12.grand-challenge.org. The challenge remains ongoing and open to new participants. Our three contributions are: (1) an annotated reference dataset available online for evaluation of new algorithms; (2) a quantitative scoring system for objective comparison of algorithms; and (3) performance analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the various vessel segmentation methods in the presence of various lung diseases.Rudyanto, RD.; Kerkstra, S.; Van Rikxoort, EM.; Fetita, C.; Brillet, P.; Lefevre, C.; Xue, W....     A Roadmap for HEP Software and Computing R&D for the 2020s

    Particle physics has an ambitious and broad experimental programme for the coming decades. This programme requires large investments in detector hardware, either to build new facilities and experiments, or to upgrade existing ones. Similarly, it requires commensurate investment in the R&D of software to acquire, manage, process, and analyse the shear amounts of data to be recorded. In planning for the HL-LHC in particular, it is critical that all of the collaborating stakeholders agree on the software goals and priorities, and that the efforts complement each other. In this spirit, this white paper describes the R&D activities required to prepare for this software upgrade.Peer reviewe
