Influence of season of birth, sex and paternal line on growth performance and carcass traits in pigs
Participants in the pig production industry focus on feed and feed additives to improve growth performance and meat quality of pigs. Consequently, the Rural Development Administration of the Republic of Korea produced a new paternal line to improve economic traits in pigs. However, there is an absence of information on pig traits with regard to season and sex, and a comparison between the new paternal line and past paternal lines. Therefore, the authors conducted this study to investigate the influence of season of birth, sex and paternal line on growth performance and carcass traits in pigs. A total of 2888 piglets ((Landrace × Yorkshire) × Darby Duroc (DD) or Chookjin Duroc (CD)) with an average age of three weeks were tested for 22 weeks during the four season of the year (spring 608 piglets, summer 404 piglets, autumn 576 piglets and winter 1300 piglets). The bodyweights (BW) of individual pig were recorded, and feed consumption was recorded at weeks 2, 12 and 22, to determine growth performance. At reaching market weight, backfat thickness was determined at the last rib area. Meat was graded according to the criteria of the slaughterhouse. There were no significant differences in growth performance and carcass traits between sexes. The CD line crossbred pig had a significant higher BW at 16 weeks, and higher carcass trait values at 22 weeks than the DD line. During weeks 8 to 16 the CD line crossbred pigs showed a tendency of an increased average daily gain (ADG) and gain : feed (G : F) ratio compared with the DD line. Furthermore, pigs born in spring had significant lower ADG, average daily feed intake (ADFI) and carcass trait values than born in the other seasons. In conclusion, the new paternal line (Chookjin Duroc) improved growth performance and carcass traits compare with the DD line. Keywords: sex, growth, terminal sire, meat quality, backfat thicknes
Prognostic implications of cellular senescence in resected non-small cell lung cancer
Background: Cure and long-term survival for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains hard to achieve. Cellular senescence, an emerging hallmark of cancer, is considered as an endogenous tumor suppressor mechanism. However, senescent cancer cells can paradoxically affect the surrounding tumor microenvironment (TME), ultimately leading to cancer relapse and metastasis. As such, the role of cellular senescence in cancer is highly controversial. Methods: In 155 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) samples from surgically resected NSCLC patients with pathological tumor-node-metastasis (pTNM) stages I-IV (8th edition), cellular senescence was assessed using a combination of four immunohistochemical senescence markers, i.e., lipofuscin, p16INK4a, p21WAF1/Cip1 and Ki67, and correlated to clinicopathological parameters and outcomes, including overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Results: A tumoral senescence signature (SS) was present in 48 out of 155 NSCLC patients, but did not correlate to any clinicopathological parameter, except for p53 mutation status. In a histologically homogenous patient cohort of 100 patients who fulfilled the following criteria: (I) one type of histology, i.e., adenocarcinoma, (II) without known epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation, (III) curative (R0) resection and (IV) no neoadjuvant systemic therapy or radiotherapy, the median OS and DFS for patients with a tumoral SS (n=30, 30.0%) compared to patients without a tumoral SS (n=70, 70.0%) was 53 versus 141 months (P=0.005) and 45 versus 55 months (P=0.25), respectively. In multiple Cox proportional hazards (Cox PH) model analysis correcting for age, pTNM stage I-III and adjuvant therapy, a tumoral SS remained a significant prognostic factor for OS (HR =2.03; P=0.014). Conclusions: The presence of a tumoral SS particularly based on high p16INK4a expression significantly affects OS in NSCLC adenocarcinoma. In this light, adjuvant senolytic therapy could be an interesting strategy for NSCLC patients harboring a tumoral SS, ultimately to improve survival of these patients
Mushy Zone Morphology During Directional Solidification of Pb-5.8 Wt Pct Sb Alloy
The Pb-5.8 wt pet Sb alloy was directionally solidified with a positive thermal gradient of 140 K cm(-1) at a growth speed ranging from 0.8 to 30 mu m s(-1), and then it was quenched to retain the mushy zone morphology. The morphology of the mushy zone along its entire length has been characterized by using a serial sectioning and three-dimensional image reconstruction technique. Variation in the cellular/dendritic shape factor, hydraulic radius of the interdendritic region, and fraction solid along the mushy zone length has been studied. A comparison with predictions from theoretical models indicates that convection remarkably reduces the primary dendrite spacing while its influence on the dendrite tip radius is not as significant
Observation of hard scattering in photoproduction events with a large rapidity gap at HERA
Events with a large rapidity gap and total transverse energy greater than 5
GeV have been observed in quasi-real photoproduction at HERA with the ZEUS
detector. The distribution of these events as a function of the
centre of mass energy is consistent with diffractive scattering. For total
transverse energies above 12 GeV, the hadronic final states show predominantly
a two-jet structure with each jet having a transverse energy greater than 4
GeV. For the two-jet events, little energy flow is found outside the jets. This
observation is consistent with the hard scattering of a quasi-real photon with
a colourless object in the proton.Comment: 19 pages, latex, 4 figures appended as uuencoded fil
Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV
A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The
analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC
from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an
integrated luminosity of 4.8 inverse femtobarns. Limits are set on the cross
section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected
exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the
standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The
analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model
Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The
largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is
observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance
of 3.1 sigma. The global significance of observing an excess with a local
significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is
estimated to be 1.8 sigma. More data are required to ascertain the origin of
this excess.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters
Measurement of isolated photon production in pp and PbPb collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 2.76 TeV
Isolated photon production is measured in proton-proton and lead-lead
collisions at nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energies of 2.76 TeV in the
pseudorapidity range |eta|<1.44 and transverse energies ET between 20 and 80
GeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The measured ET spectra are found to be
in good agreement with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions. The
ratio of PbPb to pp isolated photon ET-differential yields, scaled by the
number of incoherent nucleon-nucleon collisions, is consistent with unity for
all PbPb reaction centralities.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters
