    Energy demand in Pakistan and the possibility of inter fuel substitution

    Over the years there has been some growth in the demand for petroleum products by transport sector despite increases in prices of various petroleum components. This growth can, in part, be attributed to (a) increase in per capita income, and (b) consumer preference for convenient fuel. Notwithstanding the increase in petroleum demand due to natural increase in base, there has been a tendency of inter-fuel substitution due to manifold increase in gasoline prices and the option and availability of alternative fuel in transport sector. Thus, the conversion of vehicles initially to diesel fuel and now to CNG is a common phenomenon. Within this perspective the objectives of the study are a) to identify the factors that influence gasoline demand, b) to measure the possibility of inter-fuel substitution and the resulting consequences for petrol demand and c) generate alternative demand scenarios to overcome the existing excess supply. Simulation exercise is done to check that what happened when there is an increase the prices of gas or decrease the price of petrol. The simulation results show that if the difference between price of CNG and price of Petrol narrows by 50 percent the petrol demand will increase by 42 percen

    Multiple Areas Of Acute Vision In Two Freshwater Teleosts, The Creek Chub, Semotilus Atromaculatus (Mitchill) And The Cutlips Minnow, Exoglossum Maxillingua (Lesueur)

    The topography of Nissl-stained cells within the retinal gangalion cell layer is examined in two closely related freshwater teleosts from the family Cyprinidae. Regardless of the close phylogenetic relationship and the sympatric habitats of the two species, pronounced differences in the number and position of areas of increased cell density are observed in their retinae. In the creek chub, Semotilus atromaculatus, a midwater crepuscular feeder, three retinal specializations or areae centrales are identified in the dorsonasal, nasal, and temporal regions of the retina. In the cutlips minnow, Exoglossum maxillingua, a benthic diurnal feeder, two areae centrales are identified in temporal and nasal retina. The upper limits of the spatial resolving power of each species are calculated from the spacing of cells within the ganglion cell layer. Differences in the arrangement of isodensity contours appear to reflect the symmetry of each species' visual environment.     Metarhabditis andrassyana gen. n., sp. n. from cow dung in India is described and illustrated. The new genus is characterised by medium- to large-sized body; slightly setoff lip region; six lips forming three doublets; rhabditoid stoma with cluster of knobbed setose denticles on metastegostomal swellings; uniformly cylindrical pharyngeal corpus; well developed didelphic gonad with proximally dilated oviducts; ovoid, setoff spcrmathecae; vulva with epiptygma and vulval flaps; rectum with rectal glands; sexual dimorphism in tail with females having long filiform and males with shorter tails: stout spicules with dorsal arm; a pseudopeloderan bursa: eight bursal papillae and copulatory muscle bands. The new genus resembles Rhabditella (Cobb. 1929) Chitwood. 1933 in the structure of spicules (with dorsal arms) but differs in having larger and greater number of metastomal denticles, a remarkably weak pharyngeal corpus, lesser number of genital papillae, a well developed bursa and presence of copulatory muscle bands

    Massage Therapy for Osteoarthritis of the Knee: A Randomized Dose-Finding Trial

    In a previous trial of massage for osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee, we demonstrated feasibility, safety and possible efficacy, with benefits that persisted at least 8 weeks beyond treatment termination.We performed a RCT to identify the optimal dose of massage within an 8-week treatment regimen and to further examine durability of response. Participants were 125 adults with OA of the knee, randomized to one of four 8-week regimens of a standardized Swedish massage regimen (30 or 60 min weekly or biweekly) or to a Usual Care control. Outcomes included the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC), visual analog pain scale, range of motion, and time to walk 50 feet, assessed at baseline, 8-, 16-, and 24-weeks.WOMAC Global scores improved significantly (24.0 points, 95% CI ranged from 15.3-32.7) in the 60-minute massage groups compared to Usual Care (6.3 points, 95% CI 0.1-12.8) at the primary endpoint of 8-weeks. WOMAC subscales of pain and functionality, as well as the visual analog pain scale also demonstrated significant improvements in the 60-minute doses compared to usual care. No significant differences were seen in range of motion at 8-weeks, and no significant effects were seen in any outcome measure at 24-weeks compared to usual care. A dose-response curve based on WOMAC Global scores shows increasing effect with greater total time of massage, but with a plateau at the 60-minute/week dose.Given the superior convenience of a once-weekly protocol, cost savings, and consistency with a typical real-world massage protocol, the 60-minute once weekly dose was determined to be optimal, establishing a standard for future trials.ClinicalTrials.gov NCT00970008

    Search for resonances in the mass spectrum of muon pairs produced in association with b quark jets in proton-proton collisions at root 8 and 13 TeV

    A search for resonances in the mass range 12-70 GeV produced in association with a b quark jet and a second jet, and decaying to a muon pair, is reported. The analysis is based on data from proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 8 and 13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to integrated luminosities of 19.7 and 35.9 fb(-1), respectively. The search is carried out in two mutually exclusive event categories. Events in the first category are required to have a b quark jet in the central region (|| 2.4) and at least one jet in the forward region (|| > 2.4). Events in the second category are required to have two jets in the central region, at least one of which is identified as a b quark jet, no jets in the forward region, and low missing transverse momentum. An excess of events above the background near a dimuon mass of 28 GeV is observed in the 8 TeV data, corresponding to local significances of 4.2 and 2.9 standard deviations for the first and second event categories, respectively. A similar analysis conducted with the 13 TeV data results in a mild excess over the background in the first event category corresponding to a local significance of 2.0 standard deviations, while the second category results in a 1.4 standard deviation deficit. The fiducial cross section measurements and 95% confidence level upper limits on those for a resonance consistent with the 8 TeV excess are provided at both collision energies

    Search for supersymmetry in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV using identified top quarks

    A search for supersymmetry is presented based on proton-proton collision events containing identified hadronically decaying top quarks, no leptons, and an imbalance p(T)(miss) in transverse momentum. The data were collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). Search regions are defined in terms of the multiplicity of bottom quark jet and top quark candidates, the p(T)(miss) , the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta, and themT2 mass variable. No statistically significant excess of events is observed relative to the expectation from the standard model. Lower limits on the masses of supersymmetric particles are determined at 95% confidence level in the context of simplified models with top quark production. For a model with direct top squark pair production followed by the decay of each top squark to a top quark and a neutralino, top squark masses up to 1020 GeVand neutralino masses up to 430 GeVare excluded. For amodel with pair production of gluinos followed by the decay of each gluino to a top quark-antiquark pair and a neutralino, gluino masses up to 2040 GeVand neutralino masses up to 1150 GeVare excluded.     Pseudorapidity distributions of charged hadrons in proton-lead collisions at root s(NN)=5:02 and 8.16 TeV

    The pseudorapidity distributions of charged hadrons in proton-lead collisions at nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies root s(NN) = 5.02 and 8.16 TeV are presented. The measurements are based on data samples collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The number of primary charged hadrons produced in non-single-diffractive proton-lead collisions is determined in the pseudorapidity range vertical bar eta(lab)vertical bar vertical bar(vertical bar eta cm vertical bar) <0.5 are 17.1 +/- 0.01 (stat) +/- 0.59 (syst) and 20.10 +/- 0.01 (stat) +/- 0.5(syst) at root s(NN) = 5.02 and 8.16 TeV, respectively. The particle densities per participant nucleon are compared to similar measurements in proton-proton, proton-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus collisions.Peer reviewe
