    Study of the machinability of an Inconel 625 composite with added NiTi-TiB2 fabricated by direct laser deposition

    This work studies the process feasibility of milling a metal-matrix composite based on Inconel 625 with added NiTi-TiB2 fabricated by direct laser deposition. The composite is intended for manufacturing turbine blades and it has strength characteristics on par with those of Inconel 625. However, the addition of TiB2 has improved its heat and wear resistance. This material is new, and its machinability has not been studied. The new composite was milled with end mill cutters, and recommendations were worked out on the cutting speed, feed per tooth, cutter flank angle, as well as depth and width of milling. The wear of cutter teeth flank was more intense. After the flank wear land on the back surface of a tooth had reached 0.11–0.15 mm, there was a sharp increase in the forces applied which was followed by brittle fracture of the tooth. Milling at a speed of 25 m/min ensured 28 min of stable operation. However, afterwards the critical wear value of 0.11 mm was quickly approached at a cutting speed of 50 m/min, and critical wear followed after 14 min.я Dependencies of the cutting forces vs. time for all the selected cutting speeds and throughout the entire testing time period have a tendency to increase, which indicates the influence of cutter wear on the cutting forces. It was found that the durability of the cutters increases with an increase in the milling width and a decrease in the milling depth

    A theoretical and experimental investigation on the SHS synthesis of (HfTiCN)-TiB2 high-entropy composite

    In this work, a fundamental possibility of obtaining a high-entropy ceramic (HfTiCN)-TiB2 composite material by the coupled self-propagating high-temperature synthesis is shown. To search for a stable fixed composition of the HfTiCN compound, the USPEX code was used with the CASTEP interface at 0K. According to the XRD analysis, the obtained SHS product is represented by HfTiCN phase (60 wt%) and TiB2 phase (40 wt%). Based on the results of XRD, elemental analysis, and the heat pattern of combustion of the Hf-Ti-C-N-B powder mixture, a probable mechanism for the formation of the (HfTiCN)-TiB2 composite material during the coupled self-propagating high-temperature synthesis was proposed

    Structure, properties and phase composition of composite materials based on the system NiTi-TiB2

    This article considers issues pertinent to the research of the phase composition, structure and mechanical properties of materials obtained from powders of composite (Ni-Ti)-TiB2, which have prospective applications in aerospace and automotive industry and engine construction. The starting powder materials (Ni-Ti)-TiB2 were obtained by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS). Research samples were produced using high-temperature vacuum sintering. It was shown that the use of such materials increases the wettability of the particles and allows the production of composites, the density of which is 95% of the theoretical one. Average particle size was 1.54 µm, average microhardness was 8 GPa, which is an order of magnitude higher than the average microhardness of pure nickel-based and titanium-based alloys, and the ultimate strength values were comparable to those of tungsten-based heavy alloys

    Phase composition, structure and properties of the spark plasma sintered ceramics obtained from the Al12Mg17-B-Si powder mixtures

    In this work, composite materials were obtained by spark plasma sintering of an Al12Mg17-B-Si powder mixture. The structure, phase composition, and mechanical properties of the obtained composites were studied. It was found that various compounds based on B12 icosahedrons, such as AlB12, B4Si, and B6Si, are formed during spark plasma sintering. Based on the SEM images and results of XRD analysis of the obtained specimens, a probable scheme for the formation of the phase composition of composite materials during spark plasma sintering was proposed. An increase in the Al12Mg17-B powder content in the initial mixture from 30 to 70 wt% leads to an increase in hardness from 16.55 to 21.24 GPa and a decrease in the friction coefficient and wear rate from 0.56 to 0.32 and 13.60 to 5.60 10−5 mm−3/(N/m), respectively

    Mapping-by-sequencing using NGS-based 3′-MACE-Seq reveals a new mutant allele of the essential nodulation gene Sym33 (IPD3) in pea (Pisum sativum L.)

    Large collections of pea symbiotic mutants were accumulated in the 1990s, but the causal genes for a large portion of the mutations are still not identified due to the complexity of the task. We applied a Mapping-by-Sequencing approach including Bulk Segregant Analysis and Massive Analysis of cDNA Ends (MACE-Seq) sequencing technology for genetic mapping the Sym11 gene of pea which controls the formation of symbioses with both nodule bacteria and arbuscular-mycorrhizal fungi. For mapping we developed an F2-population from the cross between pea line N24 carrying the mutant allele of sym11 and the wild type NGB1238 (=JI0073) line. Sequencing libraries were prepared from bulks of 20 plants with mutant and 12 with wild-type phenotype. MACE-Seq differential gene expression analysis between mutant-phenotype and wild-type-phenotype bulks revealed 2,235 genes, of which 514 (23%) were up-regulated and 1,721 (77%) were down-regulated in plant roots inoculated with rhizobia as a consequence of sym11 mutation. MACE-Seq also detected single nucleotide variants between bulks in 217 pea genes. Using a novel mathematical model we calculated the recombination frequency (RF) between the Sym11 gene and these 217 polymorphic genes. Six genes with the lowest RF were converted into CAPS or dCAPS markers and genetically mapped on the complete mapping population of 108 F2-plants which confirmed their tight linkage to Sym11 and to each other. The Medicago truncatula Gaertn. (Mt) homologs of these genes are located in a distinct region of Mt chromosome 5, which corresponds to linkage group I of pea. Among 94 candidate genes from this region only one was down-regulated—the pea Sym33 homolog of the Mt IPD3 gene which is essential for nodulation. Sequencing of the Sym33 allele of the N24 (sym11) mutant revealed a single nucleotide deletion (c.C319del) in its third exon resulting in a codon shift in the open reading frame and premature translation termination. Thus, we identified a novel mutant allele sym33-4 most probably responsible for the mutant phenotype of the N24 (sym11) line, thereby demonstrating that mapping by MACE-Seq can be successfully used for genetic mapping of mutations and identification of candidate genes in pea

    Juxtaposing BTE and ATE – on the role of the European insurance industry in funding civil litigation

    One of the ways in which legal services are financed, and indeed shaped, is through private insurance arrangement. Two contrasting types of legal expenses insurance contracts (LEI) seem to dominate in Europe: before the event (BTE) and after the event (ATE) legal expenses insurance. Notwithstanding institutional differences between different legal systems, BTE and ATE insurance arrangements may be instrumental if government policy is geared towards strengthening a market-oriented system of financing access to justice for individuals and business. At the same time, emphasizing the role of a private industry as a keeper of the gates to justice raises issues of accountability and transparency, not readily reconcilable with demands of competition. Moreover, multiple actors (clients, lawyers, courts, insurers) are involved, causing behavioural dynamics which are not easily predicted or influenced. Against this background, this paper looks into BTE and ATE arrangements by analysing the particularities of BTE and ATE arrangements currently available in some European jurisdictions and by painting a picture of their respective markets and legal contexts. This allows for some reflection on the performance of BTE and ATE providers as both financiers and keepers. Two issues emerge from the analysis that are worthy of some further reflection. Firstly, there is the problematic long-term sustainability of some ATE products. Secondly, the challenges faced by policymakers that would like to nudge consumers into voluntarily taking out BTE LEI

    Search for stop and higgsino production using diphoton Higgs boson decays

    Results are presented of a search for a "natural" supersymmetry scenario with gauge mediated symmetry breaking. It is assumed that only the supersymmetric partners of the top-quark (stop) and the Higgs boson (higgsino) are accessible. Events are examined in which there are two photons forming a Higgs boson candidate, and at least two b-quark jets. In 19.7 inverse femtobarns of proton-proton collision data at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV, recorded in the CMS experiment, no evidence of a signal is found and lower limits at the 95% confidence level are set, excluding the stop mass below 360 to 410 GeV, depending on the higgsino mass
