Phenomenological model of elastic distortions near the spin-Peierls transition in
A phenomenological model of the Landau type forms the basis for a study of
elastic distortions near the spin-Peierls transition in . The
atomic displacements proposed by Hirota {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf
73}, 736 (1994)] are accounted for by the model which includes linear coupling
between and distortions. displacements are seen to be responsible
for anomalies in the elastic properties {\it at} , whereas incipient
distortions give rise to temperature dependence below . A discussion of
possible critical behavior is also made.Comment: 1 figure available upon reques
Polarization phenomena in open charm photoproduction processes
We analyze polarization effects in associative photoproduction of
pseudoscalar () charmed mesons in exclusive processes , , . Circularly polarized photons
induce nonzero polarization of the -hyperon with - and -components
(in the reaction plane) and non vanishing asymmetries and for polarized nucleon target. These polarization observables can be
predicted in model-independent way for exclusive -production processes
in collinear kinematics. The T-even -polarization and asymmetries for
non-collinear kinematics can be calculated in framework of an effective
Lagrangian approach. The depolarization coefficients , characterizing
the dependence of the -polarization on the nucleon polarization are also
calculated.Comment: 36 pages 13 figure
Mass Suppression in Octet Baryon Production
There is a striking suppression of the cross section for production of octet
baryons in annihilation, as the mass of the produced hadron
increases. We present a simple parametrization for the fragmentation functions
into octet baryons guided by two input models: the SU(3) flavor symmetry part
is given by a quark-diquark model, and the baryon mass suppression part is
inspired by the string model. We need only eight free parameters to describe
the fragmentation functions for all octet baryons. These free parameters are
determined by a fit to the experimental data of octet baryon production in annihilation. Then we apply the obtained fragmentation functions to
predict the cross section of the octet baryon production in charged lepton DIS
and find consistency with the available experimental data. Furthermore, baryon
production in collisions is suggested to be an ideal domain to check the
predicted mass suppression.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figure
Single-Inclusive Jet Production in Polarized pp Collisions at O(alpha_s^3)
We present a next-to-leading order QCD calculation for single-inclusive
high-p_T jet production in longitudinally polarized pp collisions within the
``small-cone'' approximation. The fully analytical expressions obtained for the
underlying partonic hard-scattering cross sections greatly facilitate the
analysis of upcoming BNL-RHIC data on the double-spin asymmetry A_{LL}^{jet}
for this process in terms of the unknown polarization of gluons in the nucleon.
We simultaneously rederive the corresponding QCD corrections to unpolarized
scattering and confirm the results existing in the literature. We also
numerically compare to results obtained with Monte-Carlo methods and assess the
range of validity of the ``small-cone'' approximation for the kinematics
relevant at BNL-RHIC.Comment: 23 pages, 8 eps-figure
Tracking Performance of the Scintillating Fiber Detector in the K2K Experiment
The K2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment uses a Scintillating
Fiber Detector (SciFi) to reconstruct charged particles produced in neutrino
interactions in the near detector. We describe the track reconstruction
algorithm and the performance of the SciFi after three years of operation.Comment: 24pages,18 figures, and 1 table. Preprint submitted to NI
Constraints on Cosmic Strings from the LIGO-Virgo Gravitational-Wave Detectors
Cosmic strings can give rise to a large variety of interesting astrophysical phenomena. Among them, powerful bursts of gravitational waves (GWs) produced by cusps are a promising observational signature. In this Letter we present a search for GWs from cosmic string cusps in data collected by the LIGO and Virgo gravitational wave detectors between 2005 and 2010, with over 625 days of live time. We find no evidence of GW signals from cosmic strings. From this result, we derive new constraints on cosmic string parameters, which complement and improve existing limits from previous searches for a stochastic background of GWs from cosmic microwave background measurements and pulsar timing data. In particular, if the size of loops is given by the gravitational backreaction scale, we place upper limits on the string tension (Newton's Constant x mass per unit length) below 10(exp 8) in some regions of the cosmic string parameter space
An Effective-Medium Tight-Binding Model for Silicon
A new method for calculating the total energy of Si systems is presented. The
method is based on the effective-medium theory concept of a reference system.
Instead of calculating the energy of an atom in the system of interest a
reference system is introduced where the local surroundings are similar. The
energy of the reference system can be calculated selfconsistently once and for
all while the energy difference to the reference system can be obtained
approximately. We propose to calculate it using the tight-binding LMTO scheme
with the Atomic-Sphere Approximation(ASA) for the potential, and by using the
ASA with charge-conserving spheres we are able to treat open system without
introducing empty spheres. All steps in the calculational method is {\em ab
initio} in the sense that all quantities entering are calculated from first
principles without any fitting to experiment. A complete and detailed
description of the method is given together with test calculations of the
energies of phonons, elastic constants, different structures, surfaces and
surface reconstructions. We compare the results to calculations using an
empirical tight-binding scheme.Comment: 26 pages (11 uuencoded Postscript figures appended), LaTeX,

Quest for Localized 4-D Black Holes in Brane Worlds
We investigate the possibility of obtaining localized black hole solutions in
brane worlds by introducing a dependence of the four-dimensional line--element
on the extra dimension. An analysis, performed for the cases of an empty bulk
and of a bulk containing either a scalar or a gauge field, reveals that no
conventional type of matter can support such a dependence. Considering a
particular ansatz for the five-dimensional line--element that corresponds to a
black hole solution with a ``decaying'' horizon, we determine the bulk
energy--momentum tensor capable of sustaining such a behaviour. It turns out
that an exotic, shell-like distribution of matter is required. For such
solutions, the black hole singularity is indeed localized near the brane and
the spacetime is well defined near the AdS horizon, in contrast to the
behaviour found in black string type solutions.Comment: 17 pages, RevTex, 3 figures, version to appear in Physical Review D,

Experimental and Theoretical Challenges in the Search for the Quark Gluon Plasma: The STAR Collaboration's Critical Assessment of the Evidence from RHIC Collisions
We review the most important experimental results from the first three years
of nucleus-nucleus collision studies at RHIC, with emphasis on results from the
STAR experiment, and we assess their interpretation and comparison to theory.
The theory-experiment comparison suggests that central Au+Au collisions at RHIC
produce dense, rapidly thermalizing matter characterized by: (1) initial energy
densities above the critical values predicted by lattice QCD for establishment
of a Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP); (2) nearly ideal fluid flow, marked by
constituent interactions of very short mean free path, established most
probably at a stage preceding hadron formation; and (3) opacity to jets. Many
of the observations are consistent with models incorporating QGP formation in
the early collision stages, and have not found ready explanation in a hadronic
framework. However, the measurements themselves do not yet establish
unequivocal evidence for a transition to this new form of matter. The
theoretical treatment of the collision evolution, despite impressive successes,
invokes a suite of distinct models, degrees of freedom and assumptions of as
yet unknown quantitative consequence. We pose a set of important open
questions, and suggest additional measurements, at least some of which should
be addressed in order to establish a compelling basis to conclude definitively
that thermalized, deconfined quark-gluon matter has been produced at RHIC.Comment: 101 pages, 37 figures; revised version to Nucl. Phys.
Diving deep into digital literacy:emerging methods for research
Literacy studies approaches have tended to adopt a position which enables ethnographic explorations of a wide range of ‘literacies’. An important issue arising is the new challenge required for researchers to capture, manage, and analyse data that highlight the unique character of practices around texts in digital environments. Such inquiries, we argue, require multiple elements of data to be captured and analysed as part of effective literacy ethnographies. These include such things as the unfolding of digital texts, the activities around them, and features of the surrounding social and material environment. This paper addresses these methodological issues drawing from three educationally focused studies, and reporting their experiences and insights within uniquely different contexts. We deal with the issue of adopting new digital methods for literacy research through the notion of a ‘deep dive’ to explore educational tasks in classrooms. Through a discussion of how we approached the capture and analysis of our data, we present methods to better understand digital literacies in education. We then outline challenges posed by our methods, how they can be used more broadly for researching interaction in digital environments, and how they augment transdisciplinary debates and trends in research methods
