The relationship between tornadic and nontornadic convective wind fatalities and warnings
A database of tornado fatalities, nontornadic convective wind fatalities, severe thunderstorm warnings,
and tornado warnings was compiled for the period 1986â2007 to assess the spatial and temporal distribution
of warned and unwarned fatalities. The time of fatality and location as reported in Storm Data was compared
to tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings to determine if a warning was in effect when the fatality
occurred. Overall, 23.7% of tornado fatalities were unwarned, while 53.2% of nontornadic convective wind
fatalities were unwarned. Most unwarned tornado fatalities occurred prior to the mid-1990sâcoinciding
with modernization of the National Weather Serviceâwhile unwarned nontornadic convective wind fa-
talities remained at a relatively elevated frequency throughout the study period. Geographic locations with
high numbers of unwarned tornado and nontornadic convective wind fatalities were associated with one
high-magnitude event that was unwarned rather than a series of smaller unwarned events over the period.
There are many factors that contribute to warning response by the public, and the issuance of a severe
thunderstorm or tornado warning is an important initial step in the warning process. A better understanding
of the characteristics of warned and unwarned fatalities is important to future reduction of unwarned
fatalities
Theory of Transition Temperature of Magnetic Double Perovskites
We formulate a theory of double perovskite coumpounds such as SrFeReO
and SrFeMoO which have attracted recent attention for their possible
uses as spin valves and sources of spin polarized electrons. We solve the
theory in the dynamical mean field approximation to find the magnetic
transition temperature . We find that is determined by a subtle
interplay between carrier density and the Fe-Mo/Re site energy difference, and
that the non-Fe same-sublattice hopping acts to reduce . Our results
suggest that presently existing materials do not optimize
A Study of the S=1/2 Alternating Chain using Multiprecision Methods
In this paper we present results for the ground state and low-lying
excitations of the alternating Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain. Our
more conventional techniques include perturbation theory about the dimer limit
and numerical diagonalization of systems of up to 28 spins. A novel application
of multiple precision numerical diagonalization allows us to determine
analytical perturbation series to high order; the results found using this
approach include ninth-order perturbation series for the ground state energy
and one magnon gap, which were previously known only to third order. We also
give the fifth-order dispersion relation and third-order exclusive neutron
scattering structure factor for one-magnon modes and numerical and analytical
binding energies of S=0 and S=1 two-magnon bound states.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures. for submission to Phys.Rev.B. PICT files of figs

Quantum lattice fluctuations in a frustrated Heisenberg spin-Peierls chain
As a simple model for spin-Peierls systems we study a frustrated Heisenberg
chain coupled to optical phonons. In view of the anorganic spin-Peierls
compound CuGeO3 we consider two different mechanisms of spin-phonon coupling.
Combining variational concepts in the adiabatic regime and perturbation theory
in the anti-adiabatic regime we derive effective spin Hamiltonians which cover
the dynamical effect of phonons in an approximate way. Ground-state phase
diagrams of these models are determined, and the effect of frustration is
discussed. Comparing the properties of the ground state and of low-lying
excitations with exact diagonalization data for the full quantum spin phonon
models, good agreement is found especially in the anti-adiabatic regime.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures included, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Classification of a supersolid: Trial wavefunctions, Symmetry breakings and Excitation spectra
A state of matter is characterized by its symmetry breaking and elementary
excitations.
A supersolid is a state which breaks both translational symmetry and internal
symmetry.
Here, we review some past and recent works in phenomenological
Ginsburg-Landau theories, ground state trial wavefunctions and microscopic
numerical calculations. We also write down a new effective supersolid
Hamiltonian on a lattice.
The eigenstates of the Hamiltonian contains both the ground state
wavefunction and all the excited states (supersolidon) wavefunctions. We
contrast various kinds of supersolids in both continuous systems and on
lattices, both condensed matter and cold atom systems. We provide additional
new insights in studying their order parameters, symmetry breaking patterns,
the excitation spectra and detection methods.Comment: REVTEX4, 19 pages, 3 figure
Modification of Experimental Protocols for a Space Shuttle Flight and Applications for the Analysis of Cytoskeletal Structures During Fertilization, Cell Division , and Development in Sea Urchin Embryos
To explore the role of microgravity on cytoskeletal organization and skeletal calcium deposition during fertilization, cell division, and early development, the sea urchin was chosen as a model developmental system. Methods were developed to employ light, immunofluorescence, and electron microscopy on cultures being prepared for flight on the Space Shuttle. For analysis of microfilaments, microtubules, centrosomes, and calcium-requiring events, our standard laboratory protocols had to be modified substantially for experimentation on the Space Shuttle. All manipulations were carried out in a closed culture chamber containing 35 ml artificial sea water as a culture fluid. Unfertilized eggs stored for 24 hours in these chambers were fertilized with sperm diluted in sea water and fixed with concentrated fixatives for final fixation in formaldehyde, taxol, EGTA, and MgCl2(exp -6)H2O for 1 cell to 16 cell stages to preserve cytoskeletal structures for simultaneous analysis with light, immunofluorescence, and electron microscopy, and 1.5 percent glutaraldehyde and 0.4 percent formaldehyde for blastula and plueus stages. The fixed samples wre maintained in chambers without degradation for up to two weeks after which the specimens were processed and analyzed with routine methods. Since complex manipulations are not possible in the closed chambers, the fertilization coat was removed from fixation using 0.5 percent freshly prepared sodium thioglycolate solution at pH 10.0 which provided reliable immunofluorescence staining for microtubules. Sperm/egg fusion, mitosis, cytokinesis, and calcium deposition during spicule formatin in early embryogenesis were found to be without artificial alterations when compared to cells fixed fresh and processed with conventional methods
Search for the glueball candidates f0(1500) and fJ(1710) in gamma gamma collisions
Data taken with the ALEPH detector at LEP1 have been used to search for gamma
gamma production of the glueball candidates f0(1500) and fJ(1710) via their
decay to pi+pi-. No signal is observed and upper limits to the product of gamma
gamma width and pi+pi- branching ratio of the f0(1500) and the fJ(1710) have
been measured to be Gamma_(gamma gamma -> f0(1500)). BR(f0(1500)->pi+pi-) <
0.31 keV and Gamma_(gamma gamma -> fJ(1710)). BR(fJ(1710)->pi+pi-) < 0.55 keV
at 95% confidence level.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
Search for supersymmetry with a dominant R-parity violating LQDbar couplings in e+e- collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 130GeV to 172 GeV
A search for pair-production of supersymmetric particles under the assumption
that R-parity is violated via a dominant LQDbar coupling has been performed
using the data collected by ALEPH at centre-of-mass energies of 130-172 GeV.
The observed candidate events in the data are in agreement with the Standard
Model expectation. This result is translated into lower limits on the masses of
charginos, neutralinos, sleptons, sneutrinos and squarks. For instance, for
m_0=500 GeV/c^2 and tan(beta)=sqrt(2) charginos with masses smaller than 81
GeV/c^2 and neutralinos with masses smaller than 29 GeV/c^2 are excluded at the
95% confidence level for any generation structure of the LQDbar coupling.Comment: 32 pages, 30 figure
Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS
We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a
significant distance from their production point into a final state containing
charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is
conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV
and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS
detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles
is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We
observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of
supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the
neutralino lifetime. Limits are presented for different squark and neutralino
masses, enabling extension of the limits to a variety of other models.Comment: 8 pages plus author list (20 pages total), 8 figures, 1 table, final
