    Smart Fertilizers and Innovative Organic Amendments for Sustainable Agricultural Systems

    Sustainable agricultural practices are needed to provide food security for a growing global population. Food production is usually associated with high nutrient inputs in the form of mineral fertilizers. Since the beginning of agriculture, such practices have led to soil degradation and the release of environmental contaminants. In this Special Issue, we will focus on innovations in organic and inorganic fertilizer production. We welcome studies concerning new approaches for smart fertilizer development, including bioformulations with mineral particles, nanomaterials, and plant growth promoting microorganisms. We especially encourage authors taking advantage of ecological interactions to improve plant nutrient-use efficiency. Moreover, we would like to include contributions that focus on organic amendments to increase or propitiate the terrestrial C sequestration and stabilization, in order to contribute to mitigating climate change at the same time increasing food security by soil fertility, thus making win–win–win scenarios. Such techniques may concern, but are not limited to, innovative organic waste recycling procedures and new applications of mycorrhizae, rhizobioms, or free living soil bacteria and fungi

    Electrochemical energy storage is a key element of systems in a wide range of sectors, such as electro-mobility, portable devices, and renewable energy. The energy storage systems (ESSs) considered here are batteries, supercapacitors, and hybrid components such as lithium-ion capacitors. The durability of ESSs determines the total cost of ownership, the global impacts (lifecycle) on a large portion of these applications and, thus, their viability. Understanding ESS aging is a key to optimizing their design and usability in terms of their intended applications. Knowledge of ESS aging is also essential to improve their dependability (reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety).     European Union Timber Regulation Impact on International Timber Markets

    The trade of illegal timber, often from illegal logging, has severe environmental, social and economic consequences. The EU’s response to this problem came with the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Action Plan, with its specific goal to end illegal logging, thereby improving sustainability of forest resources. In March 2013, an additional step was taken by implementing the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR). The EUTR requires proof of timber’s origin and legality to ensure that no illegal timber is imported into the EU. To this end the EU intends to block imports of any wood or wood product which comes from unknown sources. Certification of sustainable forest management will help EU importers minimize risk, which is an essential part of their required due diligence system. Monitoring organizations are established to assist trade associations and businesses to construct comprehensive due diligence systems. National competent authorities are designated to follow the trade of the new FLEGT-licensed timber and timber products. In the first year of the EUTR there are positive impacts, of which the most important is awareness of the disastrous situation with illegal logging, driven by exports of illegal timber. Another positive development is tropical timber exporters documenting the legality of their wood exports. Yet another positive feature is establishment of due diligence systems by EU importers. However, there are considerable problems for ensuring legal trade; for example the lack of comprehensive documentation of origin and legality. Analysis of recent trends establishes changes in the European timber trade in terms of sourcing, substitution, diversion to less-demanding countries. Short-term forecasts of market trends and changes will enable further policy assessment to achieve the objectives of improved legality in international timber markets.JRC.H.3-Forest Resources and Climat

    Selenized yeast in production of selenium enriched Pleurotus ostreatus mushroom with good flavour

    The aim of this study was to investigate the potential influence of selenized yeast (Sel Plex, Alltech Inc., Lexington, USA) on chemical composition and flavour of solid state grown mushroom Pleurotus ostreatus. Amino acid composition that influences the flavour of selenium-enriched P.ostreatus P80 (137.84 ppm of selenium in d.w.) and non enriched cultivated strains with particular emphasis on selenomethionine was determined by HPLC method, after complete hydrolysis. Volatile flavour compounds of mushroom cultures were analyzed by GC-MS using Headspace sampler. In mushrooms with high selenium content, selenium in the form of L-selenomethionine was present. High selenium concentration in fruit body did not significantly change the amino acid composition of mushrooms. The major amino acids of fruit body sample were glutamic acid, alanine, aspartic acid and tryptophan. In the fruit body of P.ostreatus P80 control, 30 volatile compounds were detected, and in selenium enriched sample number of detected compounds was 25. Compounds that were detected in control sample, but not in eriched fruit body are 2-amino-N-ethylpropanamide, 2-methylpropyl pentan-2-yl sulfite, 2,3-pentanedione, heptan-2-one, pentan-1-ol, 2-methyldihydrofuran-3(2H)-one,1-hydroxyacetone, 3-hydroxy-2-butanon, 2,5-dimethylpyrazine, 2,6-dimethylpyrazine and benzaldehyde. Compounds that were detected in enriched P.ostreatus P80, but not in control are acetone, ethylacetate, 2-propanol, acetonitrile, 2-methylbenzaldehyde and 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate. Selenized yeast presents good source of selenium for selenium enriched mushroom production with good flavour, which is probably safety for consumption

    The Review summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 3,324 new measurements from 878 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. Particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, Probability and Statistics. Among the 120 reviews are many that are new or heavily revised, including a new review on High Energy Soft QCD and Diffraction and one on the Determination of CKM Angles from B Hadrons. The Review is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 includes the Summary Tables and 98 review articles. Volume 2 consists of the Particle Listings and contains also 22 reviews that address specific aspects of the data presented in the Listings. The complete Review (both volumes) is published online on the website of the Particle Data Group (pdg.lbl.gov) and in a journal. Volume 1 is available in print as the PDG Book. A Particle Physics Booklet with the Summary Tables and essential tables, figures, and equations from selected review articles is available in print and as a web version optimized for use on phones as well as an Android app.Peer reviewe
