Optimization methods for electric power systems: An overview
Power systems optimization problems are very difficult to solve because power systems are very large, complex, geographically widely distributed and are influenced by many unexpected events. It is therefore necessary to employ most efficient optimization methods to take full advantages in simplifying the formulation and implementation of the problem. This article presents an overview of important mathematical optimization and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques used in power optimization problems. Applications of hybrid AI techniques have also been discussed in this article
Uncertainty management in multiobjective hydro-thermal self-scheduling under emission considerations
In this paper, a stochastic multiobjective framework is proposed for a day-ahead short-term Hydro Thermal Self-Scheduling (HTSS) problem for joint energy and reserve markets. An efficient linear formulations are introduced in this paper to deal with the nonlinearity of original problem due to the dynamic ramp rate limits, prohibited operating zones, operating services of thermal plants, multi-head power discharge characteristics of hydro generating units and spillage of reservoirs. Besides, system uncertainties including the generating units\u27 contingencies and price uncertainty are explicitly considered in the stochastic market clearing scheme. For the stochastic modeling of probable multiobjective optimization scenarios, a lattice Monte Carlo simulation has been adopted to have a better coverage of the system uncertainty spectrum. Consequently, the resulting multiobjective optimization scenarios should concurrently optimize competing objective functions including GENeration COmpany\u27s (GENCO\u27s) profit maximization and thermal units\u27 emission minimization. Accordingly, the Δ-constraint method is used to solve the multiobjective optimization problem and generate the Pareto set. Then, a fuzzy satisfying method is employed to choose the most preferred solution among all Pareto optimal solutions. The performance of the presented method is verified in different case studies. The results obtained from Δ-constraint method is compared with those reported by weighted sum method, evolutionary programming-based interactive Fuzzy satisfying method, differential evolution, quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization and hybrid multi-objective cultural algorithm, verifying the superiority of the proposed approach

Big data optimization in electric power systems: a review
There are different definitions of big data, and among them, the most common definition refers
to three or five characteristics, called volume, velocity, variety, value, and veracity from (Laney
(2001)). Volume could include Tera Byte, Peta Byte, Exa Byte, and Zetta Byte. Velocity
describes how fast the data are retrieved and processed ââBatch or streamingâ. Variety describes
structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data (Laney, 2001, Zikopoulos and Eaton, 2011).
Veracity explains the integrity and disorderliness of data, while value refers to how good is the
âvalueâ we derive from analyzing data? (Zicari et al., 2016).
Electrical power systems are networks of components arrayed to supply, transfer, and use
electric power. In power system since models are used to predict and characterize operations.
However, there is a necessity for powerful optimization algorithms for information processing to
learn models as the size increase of data is becoming a global problem to solve large-scale
optimization problems. Any optimization problem includes a real function to be maximized or
minimized by systematically determination of input values from an allowed set of values.
Richness and quantity of large data sets provide the potential to enhance statistical learning
performance but require smart models that use the latent low-dimensional structure for effective

data separation.

Load frequency controllers considering renewable energy integration in power system
Abstract: Load frequency control or automatic generation control is one of the main operations that take place daily in a modern power system. The objectives of load frequency control are to maintain power balance between interconnected areas and to control the power flow in the tie-lines. Electric power cannot be stored in large quantity that is why its production must be equal to the consumption in each time. This equation constitutes the key for a good management of any power system and introduces the need of more controllers when taking into account the integration of renewable energy sources into the traditional power system. There are many controllers presented in the literature and this work reviews the traditional load frequency controllers and those, which combined the traditional controller and artificial intelligence algorithms for controlling the load frequency
Intelligent power system operation in an uncertain environment
This dissertation presents some challenging problems in power system operations. The efficacy of a heuristic method, namely, modified discrete particle swarm optimization (MDPSO) algorithm is illustrated and compared with other methods by solving the reliability based generator maintenance scheduling (GMS) optimization problem of a practical hydrothermal power system. The concept of multiple swarms is incorporated into the MDPSO algorithm to form a robust multiple swarms-modified particle swarm optimization (MS-MDPSO) algorithm and applied to solving the GMS problem on two power systems. Heuristic methods are proposed to circumvent the problems of imposed non-smooth assumptions common with the classical approaches in solving the challenging dynamic economic dispatch problem. The multi-objective combined economic and emission dispatch (MO-CEED) optimization problem for a wind-hydrothermal power system is formulated and solved in this dissertation. This MO-CEED problem formulation becomes a challenging problem because of the presence of uncertainty in wind power. A family of distributed optimal Pareto fronts for the MO-CEED problem has been generated for different scenarios of capacity credit of wind power. A real-time (RT) network stability index is formulated for determining a power system\u27s ability to continue to provide service (electric energy) in a RT manner in case of an unforeseen catastrophic contingency. Cascading stages of fuzzy inference system is applied to combine non real-time (NRT) and RT power system assessments. NRT analysis involves eigenvalue and transient energy analysis. RT analysis involves angle, voltage and frequency stability indices. RT Network status index is implemented in real-time on a practical power system --Abstract, page iv
Energy Management Systems for Smart Electric Railway Networks: A Methodological Review
Energy shortage is one of the major concerns in todayâs world. As a consumer of electrical energy, the electric railway system (ERS), due to trains, stations, and commercial users, intakes an enormous amount of electricity. Increasing greenhouse gases (GHG) and CO2 emissions, in addition, have drawn the regard of world leaders as among the most dangerous threats at present; based on research in this field, the transportation sector contributes significantly to this pollution. Railway Energy Management Systems (REMS) are a modern green solution that not only tackle these problems but also, by implementing REMS, electricity can be sold to the grid market. Researchers have been trying to reduce the daily operational costs of smart railway stations, mitigating power quality issues, considering the traction uncertainties and stochastic behavior of Renewable Energy Resources (RERs) and Energy Storage Systems (ESSs), which has a significant impact on total operational cost. In this context, the first main objective of this article is to take a comprehensive review of the literature on REMS and examine closely all the works that have been carried out in this area, and also the REMS architecture and configurations are clarified as well. The secondary objective of this article is to analyze both traditional and modern methods utilized in REMS and conduct a thorough comparison of them. In order to provide a comprehensive analysis in this field, over 120 publications have been compiled, listed, and categorized. The study highlights the potential of leveraging RERs for cost reduction and sustainability. Evaluating factors including speed, simplicity, efficiency, accuracy, and ability to handle stochastic behavior and constraints, the strengths and limitations of each optimization method are elucidated
