Social4Rec: Distilling User Preference from Social Graph for Video Recommendation in Tencent
Despite recommender systems play a key role in network content platforms,
mining the user's interests is still a significant challenge. Existing works
predict the user interest by utilizing user behaviors, i.e., clicks, views,
etc., but current solutions are ineffective when users perform unsettled
activities. The latter ones involve new users, which have few activities of any
kind, and sparse users who have low-frequency behaviors. We uniformly describe
both these user-types as "cold users", which are very common but often
neglected in network content platforms. To address this issue, we enhance the
representation of the user interest by combining his social interest, e.g.,
friendship, following bloggers, interest groups, etc., with the activity
behaviors. Thus, in this work, we present a novel algorithm entitled SocialNet,
which adopts a two-stage method to progressively extract the coarse-grained and
fine-grained social interest. Our technique then concatenates SocialNet's
output with the original user representation to get the final user
representation that combines behavior interests and social interests. Offline
experiments on Tencent video's recommender system demonstrate the superiority
over the baseline behavior-based model. The online experiment also shows a
significant performance improvement in clicks and view time in the real-world
recommendation system. The source code is available at

Mining User Behavior in Social Environments
The growth of the Web 2.0 has brought to a widespread use of social media
systems and to an increasing number of active users. This phenomenon
implies that each user interacts with too many users and is overwhelmed
by a huge amount of content, leading to the well know “social interaction
overload” problem. In order to address this problem several research
communities study Social Recommender Systems, which are information
filtering systems that operate in the social media domain and aim at suggesting
to the users items that are supposed to be interesting for them.
Social Recommender Systems usually filter content by exploiting the social
graph or by mining the user content. Since the social domain is characterized
by a continuous and quick growth of the the amount of content and
users, both these approaches face some problems to produce accurate and
up-to-date recommendations.
This PhD thesis proposes some social recommendation approaches
based on the mining of the user behavior, i.e., on the exploitation of the activity of the users in social environments, in order to produce accurate
and up-to-date recommendations
Toward a collective intelligence recommender system for education
The development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), have revolutionized the world and have moved us into the information age, however the access and handling of this large amount of information is causing valuable time losses. Teachers in Higher Education especially use the Internet as a tool to consult materials and content for the development of the subjects. The internet has very broad services, and sometimes it is difficult for users to find the contents in an easy and fast way. This problem is increasing at the time, causing that students spend a lot of time in search information rather than in synthesis, analysis and construction of new knowledge. In this context, several questions have emerged: Is it possible to design learning activities that allow us to value the information search and to encourage collective participation?. What are the conditions that an ICT tool that supports a process of information search has to have to optimize the student's time and learning?
This article presents the use and application of a Recommender System (RS) designed on paradigms of Collective Intelligence (CI). The RS designed encourages the collective learning and the authentic participation of the students.
The research combines the literature study with the analysis of the ICT tools that have emerged in the field of the CI and RS. Also, Design-Based Research (DBR) was used to compile and summarize collective intelligence approaches and filtering techniques reported in the literature in Higher Education as well as to incrementally improving the tool.
Several are the benefits that have been evidenced as a result of the exploratory study carried out. Among them the following stand out:
• It improves student motivation, as it helps you discover new content of interest in an easy way.
• It saves time in the search and classification of teaching material of interest.
• It fosters specialized reading, inspires competence as a means of learning.
• It gives the teacher the ability to generate reports of trends and behaviors of their students, real-time assessment of the quality of learning material.
The authors consider that the use of ICT tools that combine the paradigms of the CI and RS presented in this work, are a tool that improves the construction of student knowledge and motivates their collective development in cyberspace, in addition, the model of Filltering Contents used supports the design of models and strategies of collective intelligence in Higher Education.Postprint (author's final draft
Current Challenges and Visions in Music Recommender Systems Research
Music recommender systems (MRS) have experienced a boom in recent years,
thanks to the emergence and success of online streaming services, which
nowadays make available almost all music in the world at the user's fingertip.
While today's MRS considerably help users to find interesting music in these
huge catalogs, MRS research is still facing substantial challenges. In
particular when it comes to build, incorporate, and evaluate recommendation
strategies that integrate information beyond simple user--item interactions or
content-based descriptors, but dig deep into the very essence of listener
needs, preferences, and intentions, MRS research becomes a big endeavor and
related publications quite sparse.
The purpose of this trends and survey article is twofold. We first identify
and shed light on what we believe are the most pressing challenges MRS research
is facing, from both academic and industry perspectives. We review the state of
the art towards solving these challenges and discuss its limitations. Second,
we detail possible future directions and visions we contemplate for the further
evolution of the field. The article should therefore serve two purposes: giving
the interested reader an overview of current challenges in MRS research and
providing guidance for young researchers by identifying interesting, yet
under-researched, directions in the field
The state-of-the-art in personalized recommender systems for social networking
With the explosion of Web 2.0 application such as blogs, social and professional networks, and various other types of social media, the rich online information and various new sources of knowledge flood users and hence pose a great challenge in terms of information overload. It is critical to use intelligent agent software systems to assist users in finding the right information from an abundance of Web data. Recommender systems can help users deal with information overload problem efficiently by suggesting items (e.g., information and products) that match users’ personal interests. The recommender technology has been successfully employed in many applications such as recommending films, music, books, etc. The purpose of this report is to give an overview of existing technologies for building personalized recommender systems in social networking environment, to propose a research direction for addressing user profiling and cold start problems by exploiting user-generated content newly available in Web 2.0
Recommender Systems
The ongoing rapid expansion of the Internet greatly increases the necessity
of effective recommender systems for filtering the abundant information.
Extensive research for recommender systems is conducted by a broad range of
communities including social and computer scientists, physicists, and
interdisciplinary researchers. Despite substantial theoretical and practical
achievements, unification and comparison of different approaches are lacking,
which impedes further advances. In this article, we review recent developments
in recommender systems and discuss the major challenges. We compare and
evaluate available algorithms and examine their roles in the future
developments. In addition to algorithms, physical aspects are described to
illustrate macroscopic behavior of recommender systems. Potential impacts and
future directions are discussed. We emphasize that recommendation has a great
scientific depth and combines diverse research fields which makes it of

Extracting Implicit Social Relation for Social Recommendation Techniques in User Rating Prediction
Recommendation plays an increasingly important role in our daily lives.
Recommender systems automatically suggest items to users that might be
interesting for them. Recent studies illustrate that incorporating social trust
in Matrix Factorization methods demonstrably improves accuracy of rating
prediction. Such approaches mainly use the trust scores explicitly expressed by
users. However, it is often challenging to have users provide explicit trust
scores of each other. There exist quite a few works, which propose Trust
Metrics to compute and predict trust scores between users based on their
interactions. In this paper, first we present how social relation can be
extracted from users' ratings to items by describing Hellinger distance between
users in recommender systems. Then, we propose to incorporate the predicted
trust scores into social matrix factorization models. By analyzing social
relation extraction from three well-known real-world datasets, which both:
trust and recommendation data available, we conclude that using the implicit
social relation in social recommendation techniques has almost the same
performance compared to the actual trust scores explicitly expressed by users.
Hence, we build our method, called Hell-TrustSVD, on top of the
state-of-the-art social recommendation technique to incorporate both the
extracted implicit social relations and ratings given by users on the
prediction of items for an active user. To the best of our knowledge, this is
the first work to extend TrustSVD with extracted social trust information. The
experimental results support the idea of employing implicit trust into matrix
factorization whenever explicit trust is not available, can perform much better
than the state-of-the-art approaches in user rating prediction
