    New bonded assembly configuration for dynamic mechanical analysis of adhesives

    A new sample configuration has been developed in order to study molecular mobility of an adhesive in a bonded assembly configuration by dynamic mechanical analysis. The torsional rectangular mode is used to provide a shear solicitation all along the adherend/adhesive interface. The initial mechanical properties of each assembly's constituent are first investigated as reference. The modulus of aluminum foils used as substrates exhibits a classic elastic component and a slight viscous part due to microstructural changes or stress relaxation. Four relaxation modes are highlighted and identified for epoxy adhesive tested as a bulk material. Its viscoelastic behavior is compared to the one of adhesive tested in assembly configuration. The relaxation modes of the adhesive remain visible in spite of the sample stiffening by aluminum foils. Relaxation modes comparison shows that the temperature of loss modulus associated with the mechanical manifestation of glass transition slightly increases for the assembly configuration. Energy losses during this relaxation are much higher in the assembly configuration. Influence of rigid aluminum substrates is discussed in terms of the adhesively bonded joint solicitation mode

    Thermal cycling in space environment can cause physical aging of polymers used in structural adhesive bonded joint. Later, they can initiate failure. A methodology to follow physical aging effects on their thermal, mechanical and dielectric properties is applied to a commercial epoxy adhesive. The analytic description, using Tool, Narayanaswamy and Moynihan model gives a good description of the enthalpy relaxation. It is completed by a phenomenological analysis of the evolution of the adhesive thermal transitions, mechanical properties and molecular mobility. Testedsamples with bondedassembly are representative ofin service configurations. The influence of physical aging on the adhesive and the associated bonded assemblies is analyzed

    Electrical behaviour of a silicone elastomer under simulated space environment

    The electrical behavior of a space-used silicone elastomer was characterized using surface potential decay and dynamic dielectric spectroscopy techniques. In both cases, the dielectric manifestation of the glass transition (dipole orientation) and a charge transport phenomenon were observed. An unexpected linear increase of the surface potential with temperature was observed around Tg in thermally-stimulated potential decay experiments, due to molecular mobility limiting dipolar orientation in one hand, and 3D thermal expansion reducing the materials capacitance in the other hand. At higher temperatures, the charge transport process, believed to be thermally activated electron hopping with an activation energy of about 0.4 eV, was studied with and without the silica and iron oxide fillers present in the commercial material. These fillers were found to play a preponderant role in the low-frequency electrical conductivity of this silicone elastomer, probably through a Maxwell–Wagner–Sillars relaxation phenomenon

    Aging Effect and Induced Electric Phenomena on Dielectric Materials Irradiated With High Energy Electrons

    The high radiation dose received by space used polymers may greatly alter their electric properties. This effect could, for instance, reduce significantly radiation-induced conductivity (RIC) leading to high charging risks that were not predicted from pristine sample. For an optimized qualification and prediction, it is therefore highly important to characterize the charging properties of polymers and their evolution as a function of the received dose. This paper aimed at studying aging of electric properties of four different polymers (Teflon FEP, Kapton, polyepoxy DP 490 adhesive, and silicon QS1123 adhesive) at high dose level (105 and 106 Gy). We have been able to demonstrate that aging could lead to the reduction of RIC on some polymers (for polyepoxy and silicone adhesives, and FEP) or inversely to the increase of RIC on others (e.g., Kapton). Ionization effect must, however, be considered in the analysis of the results. Relaxation processes could drastically affect the charging profile and macroscopic electric properties

    Exploring the complementarity of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma preclinical models

    Purpose: Compare pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), preclinical models, by their transcriptome and drug response landscapes to evaluate their complementarity. Experimental De-sign: Three paired PDAC preclinical models—patient‐derived xenografts (PDX), xenograft‐derived pancreatic organoids (XDPO) and xenograft‐derived primary cell cultures (XDPCC)—were derived from 20 patients and analyzed at the transcriptomic and chemosensitivity level. Transcriptomic characterization was performed using the basal‐like/classical subtyping and the PDAC molecular gradient (PAMG). Chemosensitivity for gemcitabine, irinotecan, 5‐fluorouracil and oxaliplatin was established and the associated biological pathways were determined using independent component analysis (ICA) on the transcriptome of each model. The selection criteria used to identify the different components was the chemosensitivity score (CSS) found for each drug in each model. Results: PDX was the most dispersed model whereas XDPO and XDPCC were mainly classical and basal-like, respectively. Chemosensitivity scoring determines that PDX and XDPO display a positive correlation for three out of four drugs tested, whereas PDX and XDPCC did not correlate. No match was observed for each tumor chemosensitivity in the different models. Finally, pathway analysis shows a significant association between PDX and XDPO for the chemosensitivity‐associated pathways and PDX and XDPCC for the chemoresistance‐associated pathways. Conclusions: Each PDAC preclinical model possesses a unique basal‐like/classical transcriptomic phenotype that strongly in-fluences their global chemosensitivity. Each preclinical model is imperfect but complementary, sug-gesting that a more representative approach of the clinical reality could be obtained by combining them. Translational Relevance: The identification of molecular signatures that underpin drug sensitivity to chemotherapy in PDAC remains clinically challenging. Importantly, the vast majority of studies using preclinical in vivo and in vitro models fail when transferred to patients in a clinical setting despite initially promising results. This study presents for the first time a comparison between three preclinical models directly derived from the same patients. We show that their applica-bility to preclinical studies should be considered with a complementary focus, avoiding tumor-based direct extrapolations, which might generate misleading conclusions and consequently the overlook of clinically relevant features.Fil: Hoare, Owen.     Inhibitor-Sensitive FGFR1 Amplification in Human Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

    Background Squamous cell lung carcinomas account for approximately 25% of new lung carcinoma cases and 40,000 deaths per year in the United States. Although there are multiple genomically targeted therapies for lung adenocarcinoma, none has yet been reported in squamous cell lung carcinoma. Methodology/Principal Findings Using SNP array analysis, we found that a region of chromosome segment 8p11-12 containing three genes–WHSC1L1, LETM2, and FGFR1–is amplified in 3% of lung adenocarcinomas and 21% of squamous cell lung carcinomas. Furthermore, we demonstrated that a non-small cell lung carcinoma cell line harboring focal amplification of FGFR1 is dependent on FGFR1 activity for cell growth, as treatment of this cell line either with FGFR1-specific shRNAs or with FGFR small molecule enzymatic inhibitors leads to cell growth inhibition.     An embedding technique to determine ττ backgrounds in proton-proton collision data

    An embedding technique is presented to estimate standard model tau tau backgrounds from data with minimal simulation input. In the data, the muons are removed from reconstructed mu mu events and replaced with simulated tau leptons with the same kinematic properties. In this way, a set of hybrid events is obtained that does not rely on simulation except for the decay of the tau leptons. The challenges in describing the underlying event or the production of associated jets in the simulation are avoided. The technique described in this paper was developed for CMS. Its validation and the inherent uncertainties are also discussed. The demonstration of the performance of the technique is based on a sample of proton-proton collisions collected by CMS in 2017 at root s = 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 41.5 fb(-1).Peer reviewe

    Search for new particles in events with energetic jets and large missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

    A search is presented for new particles produced at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV, using events with energetic jets and large missing transverse momentum. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb(-1), collected in 2017-2018 with the CMS detector. Machine learning techniques are used to define separate categories for events with narrow jets from initial-state radiation and events with large-radius jets consistent with a hadronic decay of a W or Z boson. A statistical combination is made with an earlier search based on a data sample of 36 fb(-1), collected in 2016. No significant excess of events is observed with respect to the standard model background expectation determined from control samples in data. The results are interpreted in terms of limits on the branching fraction of an invisible decay of the Higgs boson, as well as constraints on simplified models of dark matter, on first-generation scalar leptoquarks decaying to quarks and neutrinos, and on models with large extra dimensions. Several of the new limits, specifically for spin-1 dark matter mediators, pseudoscalar mediators, colored mediators, and leptoquarks, are the most restrictive to date.Peer reviewe

    Combined searches for the production of supersymmetric top quark partners in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

    A combination of searches for top squark pair production using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment, is presented. Signatures with at least 2 jets and large missing transverse momentum are categorized into events with 0, 1, or 2 leptons. New results for regions of parameter space where the kinematical properties of top squark pair production and top quark pair production are very similar are presented. Depending on themodel, the combined result excludes a top squarkmass up to 1325 GeV for amassless neutralino, and a neutralinomass up to 700 GeV for a top squarkmass of 1150 GeV. Top squarks with masses from 145 to 295 GeV, for neutralino masses from 0 to 100 GeV, with a mass difference between the top squark and the neutralino in a window of 30 GeV around the mass of the top quark, are excluded for the first time with CMS data. The results of theses searches are also interpreted in an alternative signal model of dark matter production via a spin-0 mediator in association with a top quark pair. Upper limits are set on the cross section for mediator particle masses of up to 420 GeV
