Iatrogenic Hypoglycemia Induced by Valproic Acid in an Adult Patient

Literature on antiepileptic induced iatrogenic hypoglycemia is scanty. Due to its broad spectrum of activity and mechanisms of action, valproic acid (VPA), a fatty acid, is the most widely prescribed epilepsy treatment worldwide.Herein, we describe an adult epileptic patient, where persistent, otherwise unexplained hypoglycemia, was most likely induced by VPA, as suggested by the VPA time course and glucose blood levels. Indeed, no further hypoglycemic episodes occurred after VPA discontinuation and the diagnostic work-up ruled out other possible causes of hypoglycemia. This case supports the hypothesis that VPA may induce hypoglycemia, due to still not well-defined metabolic mechanisms of action. Moreover, it emphasizes the fact that an iatrogenic pathogenesis should be considered if an apparently unexplained hypoglycemia occurs in a patient on chronic therapy with antiepileptics, even at a therapeutical dosage

Design Consideration on a Polarized Gas Target for the LHC

Since 2017, the LHCSpin study group is investigating the installation of a HERMES-type polarized gas target (PGT) in front of the LHCb detector in order to perform Single-Spin Transverse Asymmetry (SSTA) measurements. In cooperation with LHC experts, the conditions for applying a PGT are being studied. As a viable option, a cold openable storage cell is considered. A key role for avoiding instabilities of the 7 TeV proton beam is the choice of a proper coating and the suppression of wake fields. A first warm (300 K) test storage cell is planned for installation in 2019 inside the VELO vessel, subject to final approval. It will improve the ongoing SMOG program of LHCb fixed target measurements, and will provide valuable experience of running a storage cell in the harsh LHC environment. The status of the design considerations on a PGT in the LHC beam and of the discussion of critical machine issues is presented.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, 11 reference

Hail is one of the most frequent meteorological phenomena associated with the occurrence of moist and deep convection. The diagnosis and forecast of the occurrence of hail requires the forecaster to analyze not only environmental variables that allow him to identify favorable environments for the development of hail storms but also the qualitative and quantitative analysis in quasi real time of information provided by weather radars. Thus, the goal of this Technical Note is to review the most relevant techniques and algorithms for hail diagnosis with both single and dual polarization radar

Argentina´s weather radar network in available since a few years ago and plays now a central role in the vigilance of severe weather events. It is for this reason that interruptions in the service in any of the radars may have a negative impact on the population. This technical report presents the first study of the network’s robustness and was carried out with information compiled during 2015 by the division Vigilancia Meteorológica por Sensores Remotos (VMSR) of the SMN. This information is presented along with a statistical description of the events that took place during the year. Four radars of the network were studied: Anguil (La Pampa), Ezeiza (Buenos Aires), Paraná (Entre Ríos) y Pergamino (Buenos Aires). From these, only Pergamino and Paraná displayed during 2015 a robustness comparable to those expected in other weather services around the world

Human VDAC pseudogenes: an emerging role for VDAC1P8 pseudogene in acute myeloid leukemia

Background Voltage-dependent anion selective channels (VDACs) are the most abundant mitochondrial outer membrane proteins, encoded in mammals by three genes, VDAC1, 2 and 3, mostly ubiquitously expressed. As ’mitochondrial gatekeepers’, VDACs control organelle and cell metabolism and are involved in many diseases. Despite the presence of numerous VDAC pseudogenes in the human genome, their significance and possible role in VDAC protein expression has not yet been considered. Results We investigated the relevance of processed pseudogenes of human VDAC genes, both in physiological and in pathological contexts. Using high-throughput tools and querying many genomic and transcriptomic databases, we show that some VDAC pseudogenes are transcribed in specific tissues and pathological contexts. The obtained experimental data confirm an association of the VDAC1P8 pseudogene with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Conclusions Our in-silico comparative analysis between the VDAC1 gene and its VDAC1P8 pseudogene, together with experimental data produced in AML cellular models, indicate a specific over-expression of the VDAC1P8 pseudogene in AML, correlated with a downregulation of the parental VDAC1 gene. Weather radars provide key information for monitoring and detecting the evolution of severe storms. In order to take advantage of this information in a simple, fast and comfortable way, a sophisticated display software is generally used. Each weather office has its own particular structure and specific needs. This technical note describes the technical characteristics that a software displaying radar information should have to satisfy the needs of the responsible division, the Vigilancia Meteorológica por Sensores Remotos (DVMSR). In addition, the evaluation of a specific software is presented as an example

Azimuthal anisotropy of charged jet production in root s(NN)=2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions

We present measurements of the azimuthal dependence of charged jet production in central and semi-central root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions with respect to the second harmonic event plane, quantified as nu(ch)(2) (jet). Jet finding is performed employing the anti-k(T) algorithm with a resolution parameter R = 0.2 using charged tracks from the ALICE tracking system. The contribution of the azimuthal anisotropy of the underlying event is taken into account event-by-event. The remaining (statistical) region-to-region fluctuations are removed on an ensemble basis by unfolding the jet spectra for different event plane orientations independently. Significant non-zero nu(ch)(2) (jet) is observed in semi-central collisions (30-50% centrality) for 20 <p(T)(ch) (jet) <90 GeV/c. The azimuthal dependence of the charged jet production is similar to the dependence observed for jets comprising both charged and neutral fragments, and compatible with measurements of the nu(2) of single charged particles at high p(T). Good agreement between the data and predictions from JEWEL, an event generator simulating parton shower evolution in the presence of a dense QCD medium, is found in semi-central collisions.
