Pneumatosis Coli Treated with Metronidazole and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: A Successful Case
Expression-based and co-localization detection of arabinogalactan protein 6 and arabinogalactan protein 11 interactors in Arabidopsis pollen and pollen tubes
Arabinogalactan proteins (AGPs) are cell wall proteoglycans that have been shown to be important for pollen development. An Arabidopsis double null mutant for two pollen-specific AGPs (agp6 agp11) showed reduced pollen tube growth and compromised response to germination cues in vivo. A microarray experiment was performed on agp6 agp11 pollen tubes to search for genetic interactions in the context of pollen tube growth. A yeast two-hybrid experiment for AGP6 and AGP11 was also designed.FEDER funds: (COMPETE program); COST Action FA0903
Geotechnical characterization of the upper Pleistocene-Holocene alluvial deposits of Roma (Italy) by means of multivariate geostatistics: Cross-validation results
We are presenting an attempt to evaluate the spatial variability of geotechnical parameters in the upper
Pleistocene–Holocene alluvial deposits of Roma (Italy) by means of multivariate geostatistics.
The upper Pleistocene–Holocene alluvial deposits of Roma are sensitive to high levels of geohazard. They
occupy a sizable and significant part of the city, being the foundation for many monuments, historical
neighborhoods, and archaeological areas, and the main host of the present and future subway lines. We have
stored information from more than 2000 geotechnical boreholes crossing the alluvial deposits into a
relational database. For the present study, only the boreholes with lithologic/textural interpretation and
geotechnical information were selected. The set includes 283 boreholes and 719 samples, which have a set of
geotechnical information comprising physical properties and mechanical parameters.
Techniques of multivariate statistics and geostatistics were combined and compared to evaluate the
estimation methods of the mechanical parameters, with special reference to the drained friction angle from
direct shear test (φ′). Principal Component Analysis was applied to the dataset to highlight the relationships
between the geotechnical parameters. Through cross-validation analysis, multiple linear regression, kriging,
and cokriging were tested as estimators of φ′. Cross-validation demonstrates that the cokriging with
granulometries as auxiliary variables is the most suitable method to estimate φ′. In addition to proving that
cokriging is a good estimator of φ′, cross-validation demonstrates that input data are coherent and this
allows us to use them for estimation of geotechnical parameters, although they come from different
laboratories and different vintages.
Nevertheless, to get the same good results of cross-validation in estimation, it is necessary for granulometries
to be available at grid points. Since this information being not available at all grid points, it is expected that, in
the future, textural information can be derived in an indirect way, i.e., from lithologic/textural spatial
reconstructions.Published251-2682.3. TTC - Laboratori di chimica e fisica delle rocceJCR Journalope
Intermittent Hypobaric Hypoxic Preconditioning Provides Neuroprotection by Increasing Antioxidant Activity, Erythropoietin Expression and Preventing Apoptosis and Astrogliosis in the Brain of Adult Rats Exposed to Acute Severe Hypoxia
Background: Exposure to intermittent hypoxia has been demonstrated to be an efficienttool for hypoxic preconditioning, preventing damage to cells and demonstrating therapeutic benefits. We aimed to evaluate the effects of respiratory intermittent hypobaric hypoxia (IHH) to avoid braininjury caused by exposure to acute severe hypoxia (ASH). Methods: biomarkers of oxidative damage, mitochondrial apoptosis, and transcriptional factors in response to hypoxia were assessed by Westernblot and immunohistochemistry in brain tissue. Four groups of rats were used: (1) normoxic (NOR),(2) exposed to ASH (FiO27% for 6 h), (3) exposed to IHH for 3 h per day over 8 days at 460 mmHg,and (4) ASH preconditioned after IHH. Results: ASH animals underwent increased oxidative-stress-related parameters, an upregulation in apoptotic proteins and had astrocytes with phenotype formscompatible with severe diffuse reactive astrogliosis. These effects were attenuated and even preventedwhen the animals were preconditioned with IHH. These changes paralleled the inhibition of NF-κBexpression and the increase of erythropoietin (EPO) levels in the brain. Conclusions: IHH exertedneuroprotection against ASH-induced oxidative injury by preventing oxidative stress and inhibitingthe apoptotic cascade, which was associated with NF-κB downregulation and EPO upregulatio

Bilirubin is independently associated with oxidized LDL levels in young obese patients
BACKGROUND:
Bilirubin can prevent lipid oxidation in vitro, but the association in vivo with oxidized low-density lipoprotein (Ox-LDL) levels has been poorly explored. Our aim is to the association of Ox-LDL with total bilirubin (TB) levels and with variables related with metabolic syndrome and inflammation, in young obese individuals.
FINDINGS:
125 obese patients (13.4 years; 53.6% females) were studied. TB, lipid profile including Ox-LDL, markers of glucose metabolism, and levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and adiponectin were determined. Anthropometric data was also collected. In all patients, Ox-LDL correlated positively with BMI, total cholesterol, LDLc, triglycerides (TG), CRP, glucose, insulin and HOMAIR; while inversely with TB and HDLc/Total cholesterol ratio (P < 0.05 for all). In multiple linear regression analysis, LDLc, TG, HDLc and TB levels were significantly associated with Ox-LDL (standardized Beta: 0.656, 0.293, -0.283, -0.164, respectively; P < 0.01 for all). After removing TG and HDLc from the analysis, HOMAIR was included in the regression model. In this new model, LDLc remained the best predictor of Ox-LDL levels (β = 0.665, P < 0.001), followed by TB (β = -0.202, P = 0.002) and HOMAIR (β = 0.163, P = 0.010).
CONCLUSIONS:
Lower bilirubin levels may contribute to increased LDL oxidation in obese children and adolescents, predisposing to increased cardiovascular risk
Characterization of Systemic Disease Development and Paw Inflammation in a Susceptible Mouse Model of Mayaro Virus Infection and Validation Using X-ray Synchrotron Microtomography
Mayaro virus (MAYV) is an emerging arthropod-borne virus endemic in Latin America and the causative agent of arthritogenic febrile disease. Mayaro fever is poorly understood; thus, we established an in vivo model of infection in susceptible type-I interferon receptor-deficient mice (IFNAR−/−) to characterize the disease. MAYV inoculations in the hind paws of IFNAR−/− mice result in visible paw inflammation, evolve into a disseminated infection and involve the activation of immune responses and inflammation. The histological analysis of inflamed paws indicated edema at the dermis and between muscle fibers and ligaments. Paw edema affected multiple tissues and was associated with MAYV replication, the local production of CXCL1 and the recruitment of granulocytes and mononuclear leukocytes to muscle. We developed a semi-automated X-ray microtomography method to visualize both soft tissue and bone, allowing for the quantification of MAYV-induced paw edema in 3D with a voxel size of 69 µm3. The results confirmed early edema onset and spreading through multiple tissues in inoculated paws. In conclusion, we detailed features of MAYV-induced systemic disease and the manifestation of paw edema in a mouse model extensively used to study infection with alphaviruses. The participation of lymphocytes and neutrophils and expression of CXCL1 are key features in both systemic and local manifestations of MAYV disease
Measurement of the cross-section and charge asymmetry of bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at TeV with the ATLAS detector
This paper presents measurements of the and cross-sections and the associated charge asymmetry as a
function of the absolute pseudorapidity of the decay muon. The data were
collected in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with
the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to a total integrated luminosity
of 20.2~\mbox{fb^{-1}}. The precision of the cross-section measurements
varies between 0.8% to 1.5% as a function of the pseudorapidity, excluding the
1.9% uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The charge asymmetry is measured
with an uncertainty between 0.002 and 0.003. The results are compared with
predictions based on next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations with various
parton distribution functions and have the sensitivity to discriminate between
them.Comment: 38 pages in total, author list starting page 22, 5 figures, 4 tables,
