OBJECTIVES: To study the relationship between behavioural profile of children suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and the previous behavioural style of these patients as toddlers. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We asked the parents of 50 schoolchildren with ADHD, and those of 30 controls, to fill in a Spanish version of the Toddler Behaviour Questionnaire (TBQ) from their retrospective perception of their children's behaviour as toddlers. TBQ items were grouped by factor analysis; t-Student between the scores of both groups and a multiple correlation analysis of TBQ and DSM-IV-ADHD-RS in each of the groups were used. RESULTS: Children in the ADHD group were reported by parents to have had a different toddler behavioural profile in comparison to that of control children (P<0.05). These differences were associated with adapting to new environments, mood, regularity and stability of play behaviour. A correlation was found between behavioural profile in DSM-IV-ADHD- RS and TBQ. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study should be interpreted with caution. However, they suggest that in the fifth trimester of life a particular behavioural style as regards regularity, stability of play, and mood, could indicate a risk of developing ADHD in the future. This behavioural style should be taken into consideration in rearing and early education prospective studies

We present 50 knees in 40 patients who were operated between 1983 and 1990 with Maquet II procedure because of patellofemoral pathology. The purpose of this work was the long-term evaluation of results. The average age of the patients was 48 years with a mean followup of 8 years and 4 months. The patellofemoral pathology was divided in 2 groups: osteoarthrosis and advanced chondromalacia. The bone graft employed was autologous graft in 30% cases and heterologous graft in the others, with an average anterior displacement of the anterior tibial tuberosity of 11 mm. The evaluation of the results was done based on clinical and radiographical parameters. The final outcome was found to be 68% of very good and good results, 22% fair and 10% bad results. An slight impairement was observed along the period of study. The conclusion is that this procedure is valid for this pathology, being enough an anterior displacement of the tibial tuberosity of 10 mm

Personality traits, theory of mind and their relationship with multiple suicide attempts in a sample of first episode psychosis patients: One-year follow-up study

BACKGROUND: High rates of suicidal behaviour (SB) have been found in first episode psychosis (FEP) patients. It has been suggested that the presence of multiple suicide attempts (mSA) increases the risk of later SA and the risk of eventual death by suicide. OBJECTIVE: Our main objective was to study the baseline factors associated with the presence of mSA during the first year after FEP. In addition, a second aim was to find out whether there were any differences between single and multiple suicide attempters in the timing of the first SA after FEP. METHOD: A total of 65 FEP patients were evaluated. The presence of SAs were recorded at two different times after FEP. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed to explore the relationship between SA with sociodemographic and clinical variables. RESULTS: Multiple linear regression showed that mSA was associated with the presence of increased symptom severity (B?=?0.35; t?=?3.67; p < 0.01) and errors in first-order false-belief task (B?=?0.48; t?=?2.11; p?=?0.04). There were significant differences in the timing of first SA after FEP between multiple and single suicide attempters. CONCLUSIONS: Theory of mind impairments along with more severe symptoms during the first contact with mental health services for psychotic symptoms appeared to be important predictors of mSA. On the other hand, multiple suicide attempters tend to make a first SA after FEP earlier than single suicide attempters. These results could contribute to the implementation of preventive suicidal programs, however they must be confirmed by additional research.Funding: This study was funded by Ministry of Science and Innovation grant ISC PI11/0233

Thermodynamic characterization of deep eutectic solvents at high pressures

Despite the large spectrum of applications being reported for DESs over the last decade, their thermodynamic characterization is often neglected, hindering a better understanding of their nature, and the development of accurate and robust thermodynamic models to describe them, essential for the conceptual and design stages of new industrial processes. This work aims at decreasing such a gap in literature by reporting new experimental density and viscosity data in wide temperature and pressure ranges for the three archetypal DESs of cholinium chloride, as hydrogen bond acceptor, combined with either ethylene glycol, glycerol, or urea, as hydrogen bond donor. The experimental data measured in this work were then correlated using the Perturbed Chain - Statistical Associating Fluid Theory equation of state coupled with the Free Volume Theory to assess the performance of existing coarse-grained models when applied to the description of DESs. The modelling results obtained highlight the limitation of the existing models, since a correct prediction of DES density could not be achieved, reinforcing the need for viable alternative approaches for the development of coarse-grained models that are appropriate for the thermodynamic modelling of DESs.publishe

Chronic renal dysfunction in maintenance heart transplant patients: the ICEBERG study

    Get PDF
[Abstract] Chronic renal dysfunction (CRD) is a major complication after heart transplantation. We sought to describe the renal function over time, to assess the risk factors associated with CRD development, and to evaluate the clinical attitudes on diagnosis and treatment of CRD. A retrospective, cross-sectional, multicenter study was conducted in 13 outpatient clinics in Spain. A total of 244 heart recipients who survived more than 2 years after transplantation were included. Post-transplantation follow-up was 7.7 years (range: 2-22 years). CRD was diagnosed in 32.4% of patients at a mean of 3.3 years after transplantation. Serum creatinine increased 0.1 ± 0.2 mg/dL per year in CRD group compared with 0.0 ± 0.2 mg/dL per year in non-CRD group (P = .003) and glomerular filtration rate decreased −1.5 ± 4.3 mL/min/1.73 m2 per year in CRD group versus −0.1 ± 4.8 mL/min/1.73 m2 per year in non-CRD group (P = .027). After CRD diagnosis, major changes in immunosuppression based on calcineurin inhibitors reduction were instituted in 46.8% of patients. Multivariate model identified recipient age (P < .0001), female sex (P = .0398), and time since transplant (P < .0001) as predictors of CRD. In conclusion, the prevalence of CRD in long-term heart recipient survivors was quite high. CRD was associated with nonmodifiable factors (age, gender, and time since transplant)

We present a precise measurement of the deuteron longitudinal spin asymmetry A_1^d and of the deuteron spin-dependent structure function g_1^d at Q^2 < 1 GeV^2 and 4*10^-5 < x < 2.5*10^-2 based on the data collected by the COMPASS experiment at CERN during the years 2002 and 2003. The statistical precision is tenfold better than that of the previous measurement in this region. The measured A_1^d and g_1^d are found to be consistent with zero in the whole range of x.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figure

Transverse spin effects in hadron-pair production from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering

    Get PDF
First measurements of azimuthal asymmetries in hadron-pair production in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on transversely polarised ^6LiD (deuteron) and NH_3 (proton) targets are presented. The data were taken in the years 2002-2004 and 2007 with the COMPASS spectrometer using a muon beam of 160 GeV/c at the CERN SPS. The asymmetries provide access to the transversity distribution functions, without involving the Collins effect as in single hadron production. The sizeable asymmetries measured on the NH_ target indicate non-vanishing u-quark transversity and two-hadron interference fragmentation functions. The small asymmetries measured on the ^6LiD target can be interpreted as indication for a cancellation of u- and d-quark transversities.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, updated to the published versio

Gluon polarization in the nucleon from quasi-real photoproduction of high-pT hadron pairs

    Get PDF
We present a determination of the gluon polarization Delta G/G in the nucleon, based on the helicity asymmetry of quasi-real photoproduction events, Q^2<1(GeV/c)^2, with a pair of large transverse-momentum hadrons in the final state. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV polarized muon beam scattered on a polarized 6-LiD target. The helicity asymmetry for the selected events is = 0.002 +- 0.019(stat.) +- 0.003(syst.). From this value, we obtain in a leading-order QCD analysis Delta G/G=0.024 +- 0.089(stat.) +- 0.057(syst.) at x_g = 0.095 and mu^2 =~ 3 (GeV}/c)^2.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

Leading order determination of the gluon polarisation from DIS events with high-p_T hadron pairs

    Get PDF
We present a determination of the gluon polarisation Delta g/g in the nucleon, based on the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry of DIS events with a pair of large transverse-momentum hadrons in the final state. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV/c polarised muon beam scattering off a polarised ^6LiD target. The gluon polarisation is evaluated by a Neural Network approach for three intervals of the gluon momentum fraction x_g covering the range 0.04 < x_g < 0.27. The values obtained at leading order in QCD do not show any significant dependence on x_g. Their average is Delta g/g = 0.125 +/- 0.060 (stat.) +/- 0.063 (syst.) at x_g=0.09 and a scale of mu^2 = 3 (GeV/c)^2.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures and 3 table

The Spin-dependent Structure Function of the Proton g_1^p and a Test of the Bjorken Sum Rule

    Get PDF
The inclusive double-spin asymmetry, A_1^p, has been measured at COMPASS in deepinelastic polarised muon scattering off a large polarised NH3 target. The data, collected in the year 2007, cover the range Q2 > 1 (GeV/c)^2, 0.004 < x < 0.7 and improve the statistical precision of g_1^p(x) by a factor of two in the region x < 0.02. The new proton asymmetries are combined with those previously published for the deuteron to extract the non-singlet spin-dependent structure function g_1^NS(x,Q2). The isovector quark density, Delta_q_3(x,Q2), is evaluated from a NLO QCD fit of g_1^NS. The first moment of Delta_q3 is in good agreement with the value predicted by the Bjorken sum rule and corresponds to a ratio of the axial and vector coupling constants g_A/g_V = 1.28+-0.07(stat)+-0.10(syst).Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
