Influence of solar radiation on the production of secondary metabolites in three rice (Oryza sativa) cultivars

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the most produced and consumed cereals worldwide and has its importance highlighted mainly in developing countries, where it plays a strategic economic and social role. Due to the importance of rice in the diet, its composition and nutritional characteristics are directly related to the health of the population. In the rice production systems, some climatic factors are determinants for the good performance of the crop, inducing the biosynthesis of primary and secondary metabolites. The present study determined the metabolic profiles through UV-visible spectrophotometry of leaf samples of three rice cultivars (Marques -- white, \\^Onix -- black, and Rubi -- red pericarp) throughout the rice's vegetative stages in two experimental times, from September to December 2015 and from January to April 2016. Solar radiation was recorded along the experimental period. To the organosolvent extracts of leaf samples, UV-vis spectrophotometric techniques were applied and the quantitative results of certain metabolites, e.g., chlorophylls, carotenoids, phenolics, flavonoids, and sugars, as well the antioxidant activity, which were analyzed by chemometrics tools. O Efeito da Complexidade Estrutural da Fonte de Carbono e Nitrogênio no Desempenho Fermentativo de Leveduras iIdustrias

Saccharomyces cerevisiae tem evoluído para utilizar melhor os nutrientes acessíveis e se adaptar as deficiências nutricionais de forma a maximizar sua sobrevivência. O presente trabalho avaliou o efeito das fontes de carbono e nitrogênio no desempenho fermentativo de leveduras industriais (Catanduva-1 e Pedra-2). As análises dos parâmetros fermentativos mostraram que o tipo da fonte de carbono e a complexidade estrutural da fonte nitrogenada causam efeitos diferentes sobre o metabolismo das linhagens industriais. As fontes de carbono contendo glicose e sacarose suplementadas com a fonte nitrogenada (peptona) apresentaram melhor desempenho fermentativo para as linhagens estudadas. Este estudo mostrou que a complexidade estrutural da fonte de nitrogênio, em correlação com o tipo de açúcar, tem um efeito importante no desempenho fermentativo de leveduras industriais

Collaborating Center on Food and School Nutrition (CECANE/UFT) in state of Tocantins

The Collaborating Center on Food and School Nutrition (CECANE) are partnerships between the National Fund for the Development of Education (FNDE) and Federal Institutions for Higher Education, which intend to provide technical and operational support to the implementation of the National School Feeding Program (PNAE), in order to guarantee the supply of adequate and healthy food to the students of public and philanthropic schools. Among the activities implemented by CECANE of the Federal University of Tocantins (UFT), it is worth noting the advising and monitoring of 36 municipalities in the years 2016 to 2017, contributing to the training of human resources responsible for PNAE and data collection on execution. It is concluded that there is a need for the continuation of CECANE / UFT actions, in order to continuously serve the largest number of municipalities and social actors of the PNAE, in order to promote the effective execution of the PNAE

Rastreamento de uso de álcool por gestantes de serviços públicos de saúde do Rio de Janeiro

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of suspected cases of alcohol use during pregnancy in women seeking care in public health services. METHODS: Cross-sectional study comprising 537 women randomly selected in public maternity hospitals in Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil, from March to October 2000. A well-trained team of female interviewers used the instruments Cut-down, Annoyed, Guilty, Eye-opener (CAGE), Tolerance Cut-down, Annoyed, Eye-opener (T-ACE) and Tolerance Worry Eye-opener Annoyed Cut-down (TWEAK) to assess suspect cases of alcohol misuse. The Chi-square test was used in the analysis according to socioeconomic and demographic variables. RESULTS: About 40% of women informed having used any type of alcoholic beverage during pregnancy. Beer was the most frequently used drink (83.9%). Depending on the measurement instrument used, estimates of alcohol misuse varied from 7.3% to 26.1%. Suspected cases of alcohol abuse were more common among non-white, older and less educated women; those not living with a partner; those reporting use of tobacco and illicit drugs either by one or both partners in a couple; and those with little social support. CONCLUSIONS: High prevalence of suspected alcohol misuse and its overlapping with several risk factors for adverse pregnancy outcomes indicate this is an important issue of public health concern requiring continuous screening during prenatal care.OBJETIVO: Avaliar a prevalência de casos suspeitos de uso inadequado de álcool durante a gestação entre mulheres atendidas na rede pública de saúde. MÉTODOS: Estudo transversal com 537 parturientes selecionadas aleatoriamente em maternidades públicas do Rio de Janeiro entre março e outubro de 2000. Entrevistadoras adequadamente treinadas identificaram os casos suspeitos de uso inadequado de álcool utilizando os instrumentos Cut-down, Annoyed, Guilty e Eye-opener (CAGE), Tolerance Cut-down, Annoyed e Eye-opener (T-ACE) e Tolerance Worry Eye-opener Annoyed Cut-down (TWEAK). Na análise segundo variáveis socioeconômicas e demográficas utilizou-se o teste qui-quadrado. RESULTADOS: Cerca de 40% das mulheres relataram fazer uso de algum tipo de bebida alcoólica durante a gestação, sendo a cerveja a bebida mais consumida (83,9%). Dependendo do instrumento de identificação, estimou-se que entre 7,3% e 26,1% das mulheres eram casos suspeitos de uso inadequado de álcool. A suspeição de utilização inadequada foi mais comum entre as mulheres de idade mais avançada; de baixa escolaridade; que não se declararam brancas; que não viviam com companheiro; que relataram tabagismo e uso de drogas ilícitas por um dos membros do casal; e com pouco apoio social. CONCLUSÕES: A alta prevalência de suspeição de uso inadequado de álcool e sua superposição com diferentes fatores de risco para desfechos deletérios na gestação indicam um importante problema de saúde pública, merecendo ser rotineiramente rastreada durante o acompanhamento pé-natal

Patrimônio e desenvolvimento: as políticas de patrimônio cultural nos anos 1960

This article aims at analyzing aspects of 1960s Brazilian cultural heritage policies, highlighting changes related to the articulation of concepts such as development, culture and heritage within the Directory of National Historical and Artistic Heritage - DPHAN, today Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN). It discusses the effects of industrialization, urban growth and development improvement measures on heritage concepts and policies, analyzing initiatives that focus on preserving cultural assets acknowledged as national historical and artistic heritage and enhancing their economical potential. The discussion emphasizes notions and understandings on heritage and preservation that had substantial bearing on preservation measures carried on by DPHAN from the 1960s on regarding the identification, valorization and protection of cultural heritage, as well as the disciplinary and institutional debates this Directory proposed.O objetivo deste artigo é analisar especificidades dos anos 1960 no que diz respeito às políticas de patrimônio, destacando algumas mudanças de entendimentos, noções e propostas, notadamente referentes às relações entre desenvolvimento, cultura e patrimônio trabalhadas pelo Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional, então Diretoria do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (DPHAN). Para tanto, vai-se partir das discussões e debates desse momento acerca dos efeitos da industrialização, do crescimento urbano e das políticas desenvolvimentistas sobre as políticas de patrimônio a partir dessa década, analisando as iniciativas voltadas à patrimonialização de bens culturais, à preservação do acervo que compunha o patrimônio histórico e artístico nacional e ao fomento de suas potencialidades econômicas. Taking the pulse of Earth's tropical forests using networks of highly distributed plots

Tropical forests are the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth. While better understanding of these forests is critical for our collective future, until quite recently efforts to measure and monitor them have been largely disconnected. Networking is essential to discover the answers to questions that transcend borders and the horizons of funding agencies. Here we show how a global community is responding to the challenges of tropical ecosystem research with diverse teams measuring forests tree-by-tree in thousands of long-term plots. We review the major scientific discoveries of this work and show how this process is changing tropical forest science. Our core approach involves linking long-term grassroots initiatives with standardized protocols and data management to generate robust scaled-up results. By connecting tropical researchers and elevating their status, our Social Research Network model recognises the key role of the data originator in scientific discovery. Conceived in 1999 with RAINFOR (South America), our permanent plot networks have been adapted to Africa (AfriTRON) and Southeast Asia (T-FORCES) and widely emulated worldwide. Now these multiple initiatives are integrated via ForestPlots.net cyber-infrastructure, linking colleagues from 54 countries across 24 plot networks. Collectively these are transforming understanding of tropical forests and their biospheric role. Together we have discovered how, where and why forest carbon and biodiversity are responding to climate change, and how they feedback on it. This long-term pan-tropical collaboration has revealed a large long-term carbon sink and its trends, as well as making clear which drivers are most important, which forest processes are affected, where they are changing, what the lags are, and the likely future responses of tropical forests as the climate continues to change. By leveraging a remarkably old technology, plot networks are sparking a very modern revolution in tropical forest science. COVID-19 symptoms at hospital admission vary with age and sex: results from the ISARIC prospective multinational observational study

Background: The ISARIC prospective multinational observational study is the largest cohort of hospitalized patients with COVID-19. We present relationships of age, sex, and nationality to presenting symptoms. Methods: International, prospective observational study of 60 109 hospitalized symptomatic patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 recruited from 43 countries between 30 January and 3 August 2020. Logistic regression was performed to evaluate relationships of age and sex to published COVID-19 case definitions and the most commonly reported symptoms. Results: ‘Typical’ symptoms of fever (69%), cough (68%) and shortness of breath (66%) were the most commonly reported. 92% of patients experienced at least one of these. Prevalence of typical symptoms was greatest in 30- to 60-year-olds (respectively 80, 79, 69%; at least one 95%). They were reported less frequently in children (≤ 18 years: 69, 48, 23; 85%), older adults (≥ 70 years: 61, 62, 65; 90%), and women (66, 66, 64; 90%; vs. men 71, 70, 67; 93%, each P < 0.001). The most common atypical presentations under 60 years of age were nausea and vomiting and abdominal pain, and over 60 years was confusion. Regression models showed significant differences in symptoms with sex, age and country. Interpretation: This international collaboration has allowed us to report reliable symptom data from the largest cohort of patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19. Adults over 60 and children admitted to hospital with COVID-19 are less likely to present with typical symptoms. Nausea and vomiting are common atypical presentations under 30 years.
