Entrepreneurial Learning in Project Ventures: Implications of Prior Venture Experience for Error Avoidance, Innovation, and Project Performance

    Get PDF
This dissertation builds on the organizational learning literature to develop and test a model of entrepreneurial learning in an increasingly prevalent organizational context – project ventures. Complementing prior research on project ventures, the focus is on the individual in charge of project venture execution. In extension of prior organizational learning research, this study examines the cross-level relationships between sub-dimensions of the entrepreneur’s prior venture experience and project-level learning outcomes. Specifically, this study investigates how the entrepreneur’s depth and breadth of experience affect three project-level outcomes: errors in project execution, novelty of project outcomes, and financial project performance. Testing the theory-based conjectures of this dissertation in a sample drawn from projects executed in the U.S. motion picture industry between 2000 and 2005 provides support for a model of learning across project ventures that accounts for sub-dimensions of prior venture experience and their differential effect on project-level outcomes. Depth of experience aids the avoidance of execution errors while breadth of experience increases the novelty of project outcomes. There is no conclusive support for a relationship of either depth or breadth of experience with the financial performance of project ventures. The implications of the findings for research on organizational learning and entrepreneurial learning are discussed and opportunities for future research are outlined. This dissertation contributes to recent research that has successfully applied organizational learning theory to better understand entrepreneurial behavior in project-venture settings

The March 28, 2003 review of the Constitution is a memorable phase for the French Overseas territories. In fact, local aspirations are finally valorised within a legal framework which combines the mechanisms related to the unity and indivisibility of the French Republic in times of diversity, flexibility and modernity. Nevertheless, this new orientation incites fear for it generates decisive breakthroughs, especially in matters of political status. And despite the guarantees offered by the text, such fears do not easily fade. Finally, is it simply a re-adjustment of the "legal corset" or the beginnings of a gradual and future letting-go? The answer is not insignificant, for the image of a unitarian French State is at stake

This paper presents an hypothesis about the origin of “ka”, which is the imperfective aspect marker in Creole from Martinique. Following Naoyo Furukawa’s analysis related to the sentences like “Le facteur qui passe!”, we try to show the relation of “ka” with the form “ ĂȘtre Ă  + infinitive” integrated in a structure implying a deictic relative

Brand Creation vs. Acquisition in Portfolio Expansion Strategy

    Get PDF
Purpose – This paper seeks to address the following question: What causes firms to choose brand creation vs brand acquisition for brand portfolio expansion? Design/methodology/approach – A multilevel interdisciplinary conceptual model is developed with nine factors at three levels of influence: the market, firm, and brand portfolio. Using 125 brand acquisitions and creations for 22 firms between 2001 and 2007, the model is tested using logistic regression to determine which factors significantly influence brand portfolio expansion strategy and whether they encourage acquisition or creation. Findings – Significant factors were found at the market and firm levels, with competitive intensity of the market having the strongest effect, followed by the firm\u27s financial leverage, market concentration, and market growth. Practical implications – Contrary to prior expectations, external factors at the market and firm levels have an impact on choice of acquisition vs creation. However, internal firm factors may serve as moderators of strategy effectiveness. Originality/value – This is the first study to empirically examine factors affecting the brand portfolio expansion strategy via brand creation versus brand acquisition across a variety of industries. From a methodological standpoint, one of the more serious and persistent problems facing prior brand research is the lack of brand-level data, but this paper\u27s approach overcomes this limitation by using media expenditures in the AdSpender database to represent brands within a category/market

The Bostrichidae of the Maltese Islands (Coleoptera)

The Bostrichidae of the Maltese Islands are reviewed. Ten species are recorded with certainty from this Archipelago, of which 6 namely, Trogoxylon impressum (Comolli, 1837), Amphicerus bimaculatus (A.G. Olivier, 1790), Heterobostrychus aequalis (Waterhouse, 1884), Sinoxylon unidentatum (Fabricius, 1801), Xyloperthella picea (A.G. Olivier, 1790) and Apate monachus Fabricius, 1775 are recorded for the first time. Two of the mentioned species (H. aequalis and S. unidentatum) are alien and recorded only on the basis of single captures and the possible establishment of these species is discussed. Earlier records of Scobicia pustulata (Fabricius, 1801) from Malta are incorrect and should be attributed to S. chevrieri (A. Villa & J.B. Villa, 1835). A zoogeographical analysis and an updated checklist of the 12 species of Bostrichidae recorded from the Maltese Islands and neighbouring Sicilian islands (Pantelleria, Linosa and Lampedusa) are also provided. Rhizopertha dominica (Fabricius, 1792) form granulipennis Lesne in Beeson & Bhatia, 1937 from Uttarakhand (northern India) was overlooked by almost all subsequent authors. Its history is summarized and the following new synonymy is established: Rhizopertha dominica (Fabricius, 1792) form granulipennis Lesne in Beeson & Bhatia, 1937 = Rhyzopertha dominica (Fabricius, 1792), syn. n. Finally, records of Amphicerus bimaculatus from Azerbaijan, of Bostrichus capucinus (Linnaeus, 1758) from Jordan and Syria, of Scobicia chevrieri from Jordan and Italy, of Xyloperthella picea from Italy, and of Apate monachus from Corsica (France) and Italy, are also provided.peer-reviewe

Hydrogen bonding regulates the rigidity of liposome-encapsulated chlorin photosensitizers

Liposomal formulations facilitate the administration of hydrophobic drugs, avoiding precipitation and aggregation phenomena when injected in polar solvents. The integration of the photosensitizer into the liposome may alter the fluidity of the system and, thus, modify the delivery process of the drug. Such a change has been observed for the liposomal formulation of Temoporfin, which is one of the most potent chlorin photosensitizers employed in photodynamic therapy. Here, all-atom molecular dynamics simulations have been performed to identify the nature of the intermolecular interactions that might be responsible of the different lipids freedom of motion when the drug is introduced in the bilayer. It is found that Temoporfin participates as a hydrogen donor in strong hydrogen-bonding interactions with the polar groups of the phospholipids. The theoretical analysis suggests that the rigidity of drug/liposome complexes can be modulated by considering the different hydrogen-bond ability of the photosensitizer and the carrier material.M.D.V. thanks the Marie Curie Actions, within the Innovative Training Network-European Join Doctorate in Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modelling TCCM-ITN-EJD-642294, for financial support.

The creoles from Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana and Haiti reveal similarities between them but also specific features which turn out to be valuable information for linguistic analysis. Examining closely three notions such as: 1) the nominal predication, 2) the nominal determination and pluralisation, and 3) the expression of tense, aspect and mood, this paper aims at showing how one can use them to contribute to Creole teaching but also to French teaching in the four Creole-speaking countries mentioned here
