    Do variable length moving average trading rules matter during a financial crisis period?

    [[abstract]]When analysing the data periods including the pre-financial and financial crisis periods, the results show that investors might make profits by using Variable Length Moving Average (VMA) trading rules as buying signals rather than as selling signals shown for the Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) stock markets.     AbstractObjectiveTo present the prenatal diagnosis and molecular cytogenetic characterization of a de novo unbalanced reciprocal translocation.Case ReportA 37-year-old woman, G3P1, underwent amniocentesis at 17 weeks of gestation because of her advanced maternal age. Her husband was 38 years old. Amniocentesis revealed a derivative chromosome 3 with the deletion of terminal 3p and the addendum of an unknown extra chromosomal segment on the distal 3p. The parental karyotypes were normal. Prenatal ultrasound findings were unremarkable. Array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) analysis using cultured amniocytes revealed a 2.38-Mb deletion in 3p26.3 [arr 3p26.3 (1-2,380,760)×1] encompassing 15 genes, which included 3 OMIM genes CHL1, CNTN6, and CNTN4, and a 13.17-Mb duplication in 16q23.1-q24.3 [arr 16q23.1q24.3 (76,999,082-90,170,596)×3] encompassing 207 genes, which included 81 OMIM genes. The pregnancy was subsequently terminated, and a malformed fetus was delivered with facial dysmorphism. Postnatal cord blood analysis revealed a karyotype of 46,XY,der(3)t(3;16)(p26.3;q23.1)dn. Polymorphic DNA marker analysis by quantitative fluorescent polymerase chain reaction (QF-PCR) on the DNAs extracted from the placenta and parental blood showed a paternal origin of the aberrant chromosome.ConclusionThe aCGH and QF-PCR analyses helped in delineating the genomic imbalance and parental origin of prenatally detected de novo unbalanced reciprocal translocation

    Preliminary study of neuroimaging and psychophysiology in adults with ADHD

    Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder  (ADHD) affects in both children and adults leading to poor executive functioning and quality of life. However, very little study focuses on neuroimaging and psychophysiology in the adults with ADHD. This preliminary study aimed to report neuroimaging and psychophysiology outcomes in the adults with ADHD. Participants in this study consisted of three groups: unaffected fathers of offspring with ADHD, adults with ADHD, and matched controls, were enrolled. A psychological battery was used in order to assess the participants’ cool cognitive function. Levels of dopaminergic activity were assessed by using the single positron emission computed tomography (SPECT) with [99mTc] TRODAT-1. In a pilot test for further study, the Iowa gambling test in a mock functional MRI was conducted. Molecular neuroimaging indicated the pivotal role of dopaminergicactivity altered a swellas functional brain imaging demonstrated difference between cool and hot executive functions. Using the Event-Related Potentials (ERP), the P300 amplitude of adults with ADHD was found to be lower than healthy group.     Enhancing the Anticancer Activity of Antrodia cinnamomea in Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells via Cocultivation With Ginger: The Impact on Cancer Cell Survival Pathways

    Antrodia cinnamomea (AC) is a medicinal fungal species that has been widely used traditionally in Taiwan for the treatment of diverse health-related conditions including cancer. It possesses potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in addition to its ability to promote cancer cell death in several human tumors. Our aim was to improve the anticancer activity of AC in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) through its cocultivation with ginger aiming at tuning the active ingredients. HCC cell lines, Huh-7 and HepG2 were used to study the in vitro anticancer activity of the ethanolic extracts of AC (EAC) alone or after the cocultivation in presence of ginger (EACG). The results indicated that the cocultivation of AC with ginger significantly induced the production of important triterpenoids and EACG was significantly more potent than EAC in targeting HCC cell lines. EACG effectively inhibited cancer cells growth via the induction of cell cycle arrest at G2/M phase and induction of apoptosis in Huh-7 and HepG2 cells as indicated by MTT assay, cell cycle analysis, Annexin V assay, and the activation of caspase-3. In addition, EACG modulated cyclin proteins expression and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways in favor of the inhibition of cancer cell survival. Taken together, the current study highlights an evidence that EACG is superior to EAC in targeting cancer cell survival and inducing apoptotic cell death in HCC. These findings support that EACG formula can serve as a potential candidate for HCC adjuvant therapy

    Rapid Trio Exome Sequencing for Autosomal Recessive Renal Tubular Dysgenesis in Recurrent Oligohydramnios

    Oligohydramnios is not a rare prenatal finding. However, recurrent oligohydramnios is uncommon, and genetic etiology should be taken into consideration. We present two families with recurrent fetal oligohydramnios that did not respond to amnioinfusion. Rapid trio-whole-exome sequencing (WES) revealed mutations in the AGT gene in both families within 1 week. The first family had a compound heterozygous mutation with c.856 + 1G > T and c.857-619_1269 + 243delinsTTGCCTTGC changes. The second family had homozygous c.857-619_1269 + 243delinsTTGCCTTGC mutations. AGT gene mutation may lead to autosomal recessive renal tubular dysgenesis, a rare and lethal disorder that can result in early neonatal death. Both the alleles identified are known alleles associated with pathogenicity. Our findings suggest that trio-WES analysis may help rapidly identify causative etiologies that can inform prompt counseling and decision-making prenatally

    An Obesity Paradox of Asian Body Mass Index after Cardiac Surgery: Arterial Oxygenations in Duration of Mechanic Ventilation

    Background. Numerous studies have documented an obesity paradox that overweight of Caucasian patients has better prognosis after cardiac surgery. This study is to examine Asian patients’ BMI to see whether an obesity paradox exists in DMV after cardiac surgery. Methods. A retrospective study consisted of 428 patients after cardiac surgery from January 2006 to December 2010 in the medical center of Taiwan. The Asian BMI was divided into 3 groups: under-normal weight patients (; ), overweight patients (BMI 24 to <27; ), and obese patients (; ). Multivariable analysis and paired were used to compare all variables. Results. Overweight patients were significantly associated with the shortest DMV. Under-normal weight patients had significantly better oxygenations of AaDO2 and P/F ratio in the DMV; however, they correlated with the longest DMV, older age, more female, lower LVSV, higher BUN, more dialysis-dependent, and poorer outcomes, namely, 1-year mortality, HAP, reintubation, tracheotomy, and LOS. Conclusions. Asian overweight patients after cardiac surgery have better prognosis. Under-normal weight patients have higher risk factors, longer DMV, and poorer outcomes; even though they have better arterial oxygenations, they seem to need better arterial oxygenations for successful weaning ventilator

    Male Germ Cell-Specific RNA Binding Protein RBMY: A New Oncogene Explaining Male Predominance in Liver Cancer

    Male gender is a risk factor for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) but the mechanisms are not fully understood. The RNA binding motif gene on the Y chromosome (RBMY), encoding a male germ cell-specific RNA splicing regulator during spermatogenesis, is aberrantly activated in human male liver cancers. This study investigated the in vitro oncogenic effect and the possible mechanism of RBMY in human hepatoma cell line HepG2 and its in vivo effect with regards to the livers of human and transgenic mice. RBMY expression in HepG2 cells was knocked down by RNA interference and the cancer cell phenotype was characterized by soft-agar colony formation and sensitivity to hydrogen-peroxide-induced apoptosis. The results revealed that RBMY knockdown reduced the transformation and anti-apoptotic efficiency of HepG2 cells. The expression of RBMY, androgen receptor (AR) and its inhibitory variant AR45, AR-targeted genes insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3) was analyzed by quantitative RT-PCR. Up-regulation of AR45 variant and reduction of IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 expression was only detected in RBMY knockdown cells. Moreover, RBMY positive human male HCC expressed lower level of AR45 as compared to RBMY negative HCC tissues. The oncogenic properties of RBMY were further assessed in a transgenic mouse model. Liver-specific RBMY transgenic mice developed hepatic pre-cancerous lesions, adenoma, and HCC. RBMY also accelerated chemical carcinogen-induced hepatocarcinogenesis in transgenic mice. Collectively, these findings suggest that Y chromosome-specific RBMY is likely involved in the regulation of androgen receptor activity and contributes to male predominance of HCC

    Observation of associated near-side and away-side long-range correlations in √sNN=5.02  TeV proton-lead collisions with the ATLAS detector

    Two-particle correlations in relative azimuthal angle (Δϕ) and pseudorapidity (Δη) are measured in √sNN=5.02  TeV p+Pb collisions using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurements are performed using approximately 1  Όb-1 of data as a function of transverse momentum (pT) and the transverse energy (ÎŁETPb) summed over 3.1<η<4.9 in the direction of the Pb beam. The correlation function, constructed from charged particles, exhibits a long-range (2<|Δη|<5) “near-side” (Δϕ∌0) correlation that grows rapidly with increasing ÎŁETPb. A long-range “away-side” (Δϕ∌π) correlation, obtained by subtracting the expected contributions from recoiling dijets and other sources estimated using events with small ÎŁETPb, is found to match the near-side correlation in magnitude, shape (in Δη and Δϕ) and ÎŁETPb dependence. The resultant Δϕ correlation is approximately symmetric about π/2, and is consistent with a dominant cos⁥2Δϕ modulation for all ÎŁETPb ranges and particle pT
