Plate-impact loading of cellular structures formed by selective laser melting
Studies of the shock loading of porous material have the potential to improve our understanding of factors such as density, crush strength and pore size on energy absorbing capability. Porous components were manufactured using Selective Laser Melting (SLM) in which layers of metal powder are fused together to create a structure specified by an electronic file. Samples have been manufactured in which a lattice is formed by an array of intersecting rods angled at 45 degrees to the surface of a 6 mm thick x ~100 mm diameter disc. The cell size is 1 mm3 and the density is 44.6% of solid. A 100 mm gas gun has been used to impact the porous samples onto solid stainless steel plates. Het-V laser interferometry was used to measure the velocity vs. time profile of the transmitted shock. The experimental results were compared with three dimensional computer predictions. It was found that the simulations reproduced the main features of the experimental record but tended to underestimate the measured velocities, suggesting that the codes were not calculating the energy absorbed by the lattice correctly. Additional calculations were performed with the aim of building a picture of the processes of energy absorption in cellular materials whose structure is varied systematically. These supporting studies suggest a possible explanation for the observed computational/experimental discrepancies. © 2012 British Crown

Impact response of additively manufactured metallic hybrid lattice materials
Additive manufacturing (AM) enables the design of new cellular materials for blast and impact mitigation by allowing novel material-geometry combinations to be realised and examined at a laboratory scale. However, design of these materials requires an understanding of the relationship between the AM process and material properties at different length scales: from the microstructure to geometric feature rendition to overall dynamic performance. To date, there remain significant uncertainties about both the potential benefits and pitfalls of using AM to design and optimise cellular materials for dynamic energy absorbing applications. This experimental investigation focuses on the out-of-plane compression of stainless steel cellular materials fabricated using selective laser melting (SLM), and makes two specific contributions. First, we demonstrate how the AM process itself influences the characteristics of these cellular materials across a range of length scales, and, crucially, how this influences the dynamic deformation. Secondly, we demonstrate how an AM route can be used to add geometric complexity to the cell structure, creating a versatile basis for future geometry optimisation. Starting with an AM square honeycomb (the reference case), we add porosity to the walls by replacing them with a lattice truss, while maintaining the same relative density. This geometry hybridisation is an approach uniquely suited to this manufacturing route. It is found that the hybrid lattice-walled honeycomb geometry significantly outperforms previously reported AM lattices in terms of specific strength, specific energy absorption, and energy absorption efficiency. It is also found that the hybrid geometry outperforms the benchmark metallic square honeycomb in terms of energy absorption efficiency in the intermediate impact velocity regime (i.e. between quasi-static loading and loading rates at which wave propagation effects begin to become pronounced), a regime in which the collapse is dominated by dynamic buckling effects.The authors are grateful to AWE for financial support
The expected performance of stellar parametrization with Gaia spectrophotometry
Gaia will obtain astrometry and spectrophotometry for essentially all sources
in the sky down to a broad band magnitude limit of G=20, an expected yield of
10^9 stars. Its main scientific objective is to reveal the formation and
evolution of our Galaxy through chemo-dynamical analysis. In addition to
inferring positions, parallaxes and proper motions from the astrometry, we must
also infer the astrophysical parameters of the stars from the
spectrophotometry, the BP/RP spectrum. Here we investigate the performance of
three different algorithms (SVM, ILIUM, Aeneas) for estimating the effective
temperature, line-of-sight interstellar extinction, metallicity and surface
gravity of A-M stars over a wide range of these parameters and over the full
magnitude range Gaia will observe (G=6-20mag). One of the algorithms, Aeneas,
infers the posterior probability density function over all parameters, and can
optionally take into account the parallax and the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram
to improve the estimates. For all algorithms the accuracy of estimation depends
on G and on the value of the parameters themselves, so a broad summary of
performance is only approximate. For stars at G=15 with less than two
magnitudes extinction, we expect to be able to estimate Teff to within 1%, logg
to 0.1-0.2dex, and [Fe/H] (for FGKM stars) to 0.1-0.2dex, just using the BP/RP
spectrum (mean absolute error statistics are quoted). Performance degrades at
larger extinctions, but not always by a large amount. Extinction can be
estimated to an accuracy of 0.05-0.2mag for stars across the full parameter
range with a priori unknown extinction between 0 and 10mag. Performance
degrades at fainter magnitudes, but even at G=19 we can estimate logg to better
than 0.2dex for all spectral types, and [Fe/H] to within 0.35dex for FGKM

TFOS Lifestyle: Impact of elective medications and procedures on the ocular surface
The word “elective” refers to medications and procedures undertaken by choice or with a lower grade of prioritization. Patients usually use elective medications or undergo elective procedures to treat pathologic conditions or for cosmetic enhancement, impacting their lifestyle positively and, thus, improving their quality of life. However, those interventions can affect the homeostasis of the tear film and ocular surface. Consequently, they generate signs and symptoms that could impair the patient's quality of life. This report describes the impact of elective topical and systemic medications and procedures on the ocular surface and the underlying mechanisms. Moreover, elective procedures performed for ocular diseases, cosmetic enhancement, and non-ophthalmic interventions, such as radiotherapy and bariatric surgery, are discussed. The report also evaluates significant anatomical and biological consequences of non-urgent interventions to the ocular surface, such as neuropathic and neurotrophic keratopathies. Besides that, it provides an overview of the prophylaxis and management of pathological conditions resulting from the studied interventions and suggests areas for future research. The report also contains a systematic review investigating the quality of life among people who have undergone small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE). Overall, SMILE refractive surgery seems to cause more vision disturbances than LASIK in the first month post-surgery, but less dry eye symptoms in long-term follow up
Surgical and conservative treatment of patients with congenital scoliosis: α search for long-term results
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In view of the limited data available on the conservative treatment of patients with congenital scoliosis (CS), early surgery is suggested in mild cases with formation failures. Patients with segmentation failures will not benefit from conservative treatment. The purpose of this review is to identify the mid- or long-term results of spinal fusion surgery in patients with congenital scoliosis.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Retrospective and prospective studies were included, reporting on the outcome of surgery in patients with congenital scoliosis. Studies concerning a small numbers of cases treated conservatively were included too. We analyzed mid-term (5 to 7 years) and long-term results (7 years or more), both as regards the maintenance of the correction of scoliosis and the safety of instrumentation, the early and late complications of surgery and their effect on quality of life.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A small number of studies of surgically treated patients were found, contained follow-up periods of 4-6 years that in the most cases, skeletal maturity was not yet reached, and few with follow-up of 36-44 years. The results of bracing in children with congenital scoliosis, mainly in cases with failure of formation, were also studied.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>Spinal surgery in patients with congenital scoliosis is regarded in short as a safe procedure and should be performed. On the other hand, early and late complications are also described, concerning not only intraoperative and immediate postoperative problems, but also the safety and efficacy of the spinal instrumentation and the possibility of developing neurological disorders and the long-term effect these may have on both lung function and the quality of life of children.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Few cases indicate the long-term results of surgical techniques, in the natural progression of scoliosis. Similarly, few cases have been reported on the influence of conservative treatment.</p> <p>In conclusion, patients with segmentation failures should be treated surgically early, according to the rate of deformity formation and certainly before the pubertal growth spurt to try to avoid cor- pulmonale, even though there is lack of evidence for that in the long-term. Furthermore, in patients with formation failures, further investigation is needed to document where a conservative approach would be necessary.</p
Potential antitumor effects of nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate in hormone receptor negative breast cancer patients with bone metastases
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This retrospective study evaluated, according to hormone receptor status, the antitumor effects of bisphosphonate especially on survival and disease progression in breast cancer patients with metastatic bone disease.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Of 317 patients with initial bone metastasis and known breast cancer subtypes, 230 patients (72.6%) had hormone receptor (HR) positive tumors, and 87 patients (27.4%) had HR negative tumors. We assessed the primary outcome of overall survival (OS), after adjusting for other factors, comparing a group that received bisphosphonates (BPs) with a group that did not receive it.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>87.8% of HR positive and 69.0% of HR negative patients received BPs with a median number of 17.7 cycles. Although BPs treatment made no survival benefit in HR positive group, HR negative patients showed a significant prolonged survival when they received BPs treatment (hazard ratio = 0.56 [95% CI 0.34 to 0.91], <it>P </it>= 0.019). In multivariate analysis, disease free interval > 2 years (<it>P </it>= 0.036), a sum of metastatic sites < 3 (<it>P </it>= 0.034), and BP treatments (<it>P </it>= 0.007) were significant factors for survival in HR negative patients.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Bisphosphonate treatment can result in a survival benefit in metastatic breast cancer patients with HR negative tumors.</p
Involvement of Noradrenergic Neurotransmission in the Stress- but not Cocaine-Induced Reinstatement of Extinguished Cocaine-Induced Conditioned Place Preference in Mice: Role for β-2 Adrenergic Receptors
The responsiveness of central noradrenergic systems to stressors and cocaine poses norepinephrine as a potential common mechanism through which drug re-exposure and stressful stimuli promote relapse. This study investigated the role of noradrenergic systems in the reinstatement of extinguished cocaine-induced conditioned place preference by cocaine and stress in male C57BL/6 mice. Cocaine- (15 mg/kg, i.p.) induced conditioned place preference was extinguished by repeated exposure to the apparatus in the absence of drug and reestablished by a cocaine challenge (15 mg/kg), exposure to a stressor (6-min forced swim (FS); 20–25°C water), or administration of the α-2 adrenergic receptor (AR) antagonists yohimbine (2 mg/kg, i.p.) or BRL44408 (5, 10 mg/kg, i.p.). To investigate the role of ARs, mice were administered the nonselective β-AR antagonist, propranolol (5, 10 mg/kg, i.p.), the α-1 AR antagonist, prazosin (1, 2 mg/kg, i.p.), or the α-2 AR agonist, clonidine (0.03, 0.3 mg/kg, i.p.) before reinstatement testing. Clonidine, prazosin, and propranolol failed to block cocaine-induced reinstatement. The low (0.03 mg/kg) but not high (0.3 mg/kg) clonidine dose fully blocked FS-induced reinstatement but not reinstatement by yohimbine. Propranolol, but not prazosin, blocked reinstatement by both yohimbine and FS, suggesting the involvement of β-ARs. The β-2 AR antagonist ICI-118551 (1 mg/kg, i.p.), but not the β-1 AR antagonist betaxolol (10 mg/kg, i.p.), also blocked FS-induced reinstatement. These findings suggest that stress-induced reinstatement requires noradrenergic signaling through β-2 ARs and that cocaine-induced reinstatement does not require AR activation, even though stimulation of central noradrenergic neurotransmission is sufficient to reinstate

Genome sequencing of the extinct Eurasian wild aurochs, Bos primigenius, illuminates the phylogeography and evolution of cattle
Background
Domestication of the now-extinct wild aurochs, Bos primigenius, gave rise to the two major domestic extant cattle taxa, B. taurus and B. indicus. While previous genetic studies have shed some light on the evolutionary relationships between European aurochs and modern cattle, important questions remain unanswered, including the phylogenetic status of aurochs, whether gene flow from aurochs into early domestic populations occurred, and which genomic regions were subject to selection processes during and after domestication. Here, we address these questions using whole-genome sequencing data generated from an approximately 6,750-year-old British aurochs bone and genome sequence data from 81 additional cattle plus genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism data from a diverse panel of 1,225 modern animals.
Results
Phylogenomic analyses place the aurochs as a distinct outgroup to the domestic B. taurus lineage, supporting the predominant Near Eastern origin of European cattle. Conversely, traditional British and Irish breeds share more genetic variants with this aurochs specimen than other European populations, supporting localized gene flow from aurochs into the ancestors of modern British and Irish cattle, perhaps through purposeful restocking by early herders in Britain. Finally, the functions of genes showing evidence for positive selection in B. taurus are enriched for neurobiology, growth, metabolism and immunobiology, suggesting that these biological processes have been important in the domestication of cattle.
Conclusions
This work provides important new information regarding the origins and functional evolution of modern cattle, revealing that the interface between early European domestic populations and wild aurochs was significantly more complex than previously thought
