Ancestral Custom?: The Treatment of the War Dead in Archaic Athens

The public burial of the war dead in Classical Athens has traditionally been a subject of much scholarly interest. Although the origins of the procedures described by Thucydides as patrios nomos are still a matter of some debate, far less attention has been devoted to the Athenian war dead of the Archaic period. This thesis aims to redress this balance, looking at the practice of war burials in early Athens, through a range of evidence including mythology, archaeology and art. The thesis begins with a study of the Homeric epics, which provide our richest source for the early treatment of the war dead. The poems reveal a highly stratified society divided between the elites and the masses, where social status was strictly delineated by the postmortem fate of the fallen. Chapter 2 focuses on early Greek mythological traditions concerning burial truces and the mutilation of the dead. It is suggested that the major change implicit in these stories towards the end of the Archaic period can be aligned with wider ideological shifts in the perception of the dead in Athens and elsewhere. The iconographical and archaeological evidence forms the subject of Chapter 3, which looks at artistic depictions on vases and funerary monuments in early Athens. The fate of the war dead, it is argued, was fundamentally defined by the highly elitist mentality which influenced the contemporary practice of war. Finally, Chapter 4 sets these conclusions in the context of Athenian political history, tracing the social and institutional developments of the citizen army up to the reforms of Cleisthenes. The treatment of the war dead, it is concluded, provides important insights into the nature and composition of Archaic Athenian armies, illuminating a number of social and cultural shifts which transformed Athens towards the end of the sixth century BC

Housing policy as a depopulation reducing tool: selected instruments used in Polish cities

During last few years depopulation became a phenomenon more visible in Polish cities. The motivation of people to leave a family town is to improve living and working conditions. Cities can respond to demographic processes in a significant way by using proper instruments of the housing policy. The purpose of the author was to present these urban housing policy instruments, which are used to reduce the phenomenon of depopulation. The most frequently used ones are presented as well as innovative solutions, which are an attempt to solve specific problems of selected cities.Depopulacja to zjawisko coraz silniej widoczne w polskich miastach. Motywacją osób opuszczających na stałe rodzinne miasto jest dążenie do poprawy warunków życia i pracy. Znaczna grupa osób deklaruje jednak, że zrezygnowałaby z wyjazdu, gdyby w mieście odnalazła możliwość zatrudnienia, odpowiednie warunki mieszkaniowe oraz ofertę spędzania czasu wolnego. Władze miasta mogą w istotnym stopniu realizować te oczekiwania w ramach prowadzonej polityki mieszkaniowej. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie tych instrumentów miejskiej polityki mieszkaniowej, które są stosowane, aby ograniczyć zjawisko depopulacji. Przedstawiono m.in. najczęściej wykorzystywane instrumenty, jak również nowatorskie rozwiązania, które są próbą indywidualnego podejścia do problemów charakterystycznych dla wybranych miast

The radial velocity of 1 Carinae

The object of this communication is to discuss the spectrograms of this star, obtained at Bosque Alegre (Córdoba Observatory) between 1955 and 1959- There are 27 measurable spectra available, well distributed over the different phases. In each plate 28 lines were measured, selected from those recommended by the Victoria observers, for the 30 and 50 A/mm dispersion, since our plate dispersion is 42 A/mm. If instead of these lines one measures those used by Stibbs, one gets a systematic difference of +1.2 km/sec. The mean probable error of our plates is of the order of 1.5 km/sec.Asociación Argentina de Astronomí

High Resolution Hybrid Pixel Sensors for the e+e- TESLA Linear Collider Vertex Tracker

In order to fully exploit the physics potential of a future high energy e+e- linear collider, a Vertex Tracker, providing high resolution track reconstruction, is required. Hybrid Silicon pixel sensors are an attractive option, for the sensor technology, due to their read-out speed and radiation hardness, favoured in the high rate environment of the TESLA e+e- linear collider design but have been so far limited by the achievable single point space resolution. Discovery and statistics of Be stars

In I960, the authors have started at the La Plata Observatory a survey of bright B stars (m ≤ 6.5, δ< 0°, HD Spectral type 09-B5) for the discovery of emission in Hα. A two prism spectrograph attached to the 80 cm la Plata telescope was used, with a camera giving a dispersion of 180 A/mm. The slit was opened as much as possible in order to shorten the exposure times; as a consequence the region of good definition on the plates comprises only from 6000 to 6700 A.Asociación Argentina de Astronomí

Early-type helium deficient stars

Attention is called upon a group of stars in which the spectral types and the photoelectric colors disagree, the colors being too blue for the spectral types. Although a certain number of these objects is well known -the peculiar stars of the so called ”λ4200" group- the authors found a number of additional stars definitely not peculiar but exhibiting a too blue color. The objects observed so far from La Plata can be divided into two groups whose common characteristics are the weak He I lines, corresponding to a later type (B8) than their colors indicate (B5), and whose differences consist in the strength of the C II lines. In one group, CII is normal for the colors, while in the other group it is normal for the strength of the He I lines. More objects of this group are being observed.Asociación Argentina de Astronomí
