    Intégration des immigrés et associations en France. Un essai d'approche croisée par l'économie et la géographie

It refers to a set of public policies aiming at integrating foreign populations in a given society. This paper aims at investigating the relationships between the integration of four communities installed in France (Algerian, Portugese, Turkish, and Vietnamese) and the presence of associations. The methodology is rooted on two approaches, quantitative economics and geography. It uses a new database, extracted from the Journal Officiel and several surveys, noticeably TeO. In a first step we ask whether the regional distribution and the density of associations explain the degree of integration of the migrants stemming from the four communities. In a second step we test whether memberships into an association increases or decreases the adoption of oppositional identities and if the latter influences the integration via the access to employment.Le thème de l'intégration est un des principaux angles d'attaque de la littérature scientifique consacrée à l'immigration. Il désigne un ensemble de politiques mises en œuvre par les pouvoirs publics pour que des populations soient correctement insérées dans une société donnée. Dans cet article, l'objectif est de voir s'il existe une relation entre l'intégration des personnes appartenant à quatre communautés présentes en France (Algériens, Portugais, Turcs, Vietnamiens) et l'existence d'associations. La méthode repose sur le croisement d'une approche géographique et d'une approche économique, en mobilisant des données inédites issues du Journal Officiel et de plusieurs enquêtes démographiques, notamment l'enquête TeO. On tente de voir d'abord si les variations régionales de la densité des réseaux associatifs communautaires explique la plus ou moins grande intégration des immigrés de ces quatre groupes. Ensuite, en utilisant plusieurs modèles, on tente de voir si l'appartenance à une ou à des associations non communautaires renforce l'adhésion des immigrés à des valeurs oppositionnelles au modèle culturel du pays d'accueil et si cela a une influence au moins indirecte sur leur intégration par l'accès à l'emploi

    Meteorite evidence for partial differentiation and protracted accretion of planetesimals.

    Modern meteorite classification schemes assume that no single planetary body could be source of both unmelted (chondritic) and melted (achondritic) meteorites. This dichotomy is a natural outcome of formation models assuming that planetesimal accretion occurred nearly instantaneously. However, it has recently been proposed that the accretion of many planetesimals lasted over ≳1 million years (Ma). This could have resulted in partially differentiated internal structures, with individual bodies containing iron cores, achondritic silicate mantles, and chondritic crusts. This proposal can be tested by searching for a meteorite group containing evidence for these three layers. We combine synchrotron paleomagnetic analyses with thermal, impact, and collisional evolution models to show that the parent body of the enigmatic IIE iron meteorites was such a partially differentiated planetesimal. This implies that some chondrites and achondrites simultaneously coexisted on the same planetesimal, indicating that accretion was protracted and that apparently undifferentiated asteroids may contain melted interiors

    Molecular cloning and characterization of AqpZ, a water channel from Escherichia coli

    The aquaporin family of molecular water channels is widely expressed throughout the plant and animal kingdoms. No bacterial aquaporins are known; however, sequence-related bacterial genes have been identified that encode glycerol facilitators (glpF). By homology cloning, a novel aquaporin-related DNA (aqpZ) was identified that contained no surface N-glycosylation consensus. The aqpZ RNA was not identified in mammalian mRNA by Northern analysis and exhibited bacterial codon usage preferences. Southern analysis failed to demonstrate aqpZ in mammalian genomic DNA, whereas a strongly reactive DNA was present in chromosomal DNA from Escherichia coli and other bacterial species and did not correspond to glpF. The aqpZ DNA isolated from E. coli contained a 693-base pair open reading frame encoding a polypeptide 28-38% identical to known aquaporins. When compared with other aquaporins, aqpZ encodes a 10-residue insert preceding exofacial loop C, truncated NH2 and COOH termini, and no cysteines at known mercury-sensitive sites. Expression of aqpZ cRNA conferred Xenopus oocytes with a 15-fold increase in osmotic water permeability, which was maximal after 5 days of expression, was not inhibited with HgCl2, exhibited a low activation energy (Ea = 3.8 kcal/mol), and failed to transport nonionic solutes such as urea and glycerol. In contrast, oocytes expressing glpF transported glycerol but exhibited limited osmotic water permeability. Phylogenetic comparison of aquaporins and homologs revealed a large separation between aqpZ and glpF, consistent with an ancient gene divergence

    Measurement of the cosmic ray spectrum above 4×10184{\times}10^{18} eV using inclined events detected with the Pierre Auger Observatory

    A measurement of the cosmic-ray spectrum for energies exceeding 4×10184{\times}10^{18} eV is presented, which is based on the analysis of showers with zenith angles greater than 6060^{\circ} detected with the Pierre Auger Observatory between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2013. The measured spectrum confirms a flux suppression at the highest energies. Above 5.3×10185.3{\times}10^{18} eV, the "ankle", the flux can be described by a power law EγE^{-\gamma} with index γ=2.70±0.02(stat)±0.1(sys)\gamma=2.70 \pm 0.02 \,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.1\,\text{(sys)} followed by a smooth suppression region. For the energy (EsE_\text{s}) at which the spectral flux has fallen to one-half of its extrapolated value in the absence of suppression, we find Es=(5.12±0.25(stat)1.2+1.0(sys))×1019E_\text{s}=(5.12\pm0.25\,\text{(stat)}^{+1.0}_{-1.2}\,\text{(sys)}){\times}10^{19} eV.Comment: Replaced with published version.     The BioMart community portal: an innovative alternative to large, centralized data repositories.

    The BioMart Community Portal (www.biomart.org) is a community-driven effort to provide a unified interface to biomedical databases that are distributed worldwide. The portal provides access to numerous database projects supported by 30 scientific organizations. It includes over 800 different biological datasets spanning genomics, proteomics, model organisms, cancer data, ontology information and more. All resources available through the portal are independently administered and funded by their host organizations. The BioMart data federation technology provides a unified interface to all the available data. The latest version of the portal comes with many new databases that have been created by our ever-growing community. It also comes with better support and extensibility for data analysis and visualization tools. A new addition to our toolbox, the enrichment analysis tool is now accessible through graphical and web service interface. The BioMart community portal averages over one million requests per day. Building on this level of service and the wealth of information that has become available, the BioMart Community Portal has introduced a new, more scalable and cheaper alternative to the large data stores maintained by specialized organizations

    Genetic correlation between amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and schizophrenia

Palotie on työryhmän Schizophrenia Working Grp Psychiat jäsen.We have previously shown higher-than-expected rates of schizophrenia in relatives of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), suggesting an aetiological relationship between the diseases. Here, we investigate the genetic relationship between ALS and schizophrenia using genome-wide association study data from over 100,000 unique individuals. Using linkage disequilibrium score regression, we estimate the genetic correlation between ALS and schizophrenia to be 14.3% (7.05-21.6; P = 1 x 10(-4)) with schizophrenia polygenic risk scores explaining up to 0.12% of the variance in ALS (P = 8.4 x 10(-7)). A modest increase in comorbidity of ALS and schizophrenia is expected given these findings (odds ratio 1.08-1.26) but this would require very large studies to observe epidemiologically. We identify five potential novel ALS-associated loci using conditional false discovery rate analysis. It is likely that shared neurobiological mechanisms between these two disorders will engender novel hypotheses in future preclinical and clinical studies.Peer reviewe
