Magnetic fields of the starless core L 1512
We present JCMT POL-2 850 um dust polarization observations and Mimir H band
stellar polarization observations toward the starless core L1512. We detect the
highly-ordered core-scale magnetic field traced by the POL-2 data, of which the
field orientation is consistent with the parsec-scale magnetic fields traced by
Planck data, suggesting the large-scale fields thread from the low-density
region to the dense core region in this cloud. The surrounding magnetic field
traced by the Mimir data shows a wider variation in the field orientation,
suggesting there could be a transition of magnetic field morphology at the
envelope scale. L1512 was suggested to be presumably older than 1.4 Myr in a
previous study via time-dependent chemical analysis, hinting that the magnetic
field could be strong enough to slow the collapse of L1512. In this study, we
use the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method to derive a plane-of-sky magnetic
field strength () of 187 uG and an observed mass-to-flux ratio
() of 3.52.4, suggesting that L1512 is magnetically
supercritical. However, the absence of significant infall motion and the
presence of an oscillating envelope are inconsistent with the magnetically
supercritical condition. Using a Virial analysis, we suggest the presence of a
hitherto hidden line-of-sight magnetic field strength of ~27 uG with a
mass-to-flux ratio () of ~1.6, in which case both magnetic and
kinetic pressures are important in supporting the L1512 core. On the other
hand, L1512 may have just reached supercriticality and will collapse at any

The ESR1 (6q25) locus is associated with calcaneal ultrasound parameters and radial volumetric bone mineral density in European men
<p><b>Purpose:</b> Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified 6q25, which incorporates the oestrogen receptor alpha gene (ESR1), as a quantitative trait locus for areal bone mineral density (BMD(a)) of the hip and lumbar spine. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of this locus on other bone health outcomes; calcaneal ultrasound (QUS) parameters, radial peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) parameters and markers of bone turnover in a population sample of European men.</p>
<p><b>Methods:</b> Eight single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in the 6q25 locus were genotyped in men aged 40-79 years from 7 European countries, participating in the European Male Ageing Study (EMAS). The associations between SNPs and measured bone parameters were tested under an additive genetic model adjusting for centre using linear regression.</p>
<p><b>Results:</b> 2468 men, mean (SD) aged 59.9 (11.1) years had QUS measurements performed and bone turnover marker levels measured. A subset of 628 men had DXA and pQCT measurements. Multiple independent SNPs showed significant associations with BMD using all three measurement techniques. Most notably, rs1999805 was associated with a 0.10 SD (95%CI 0.05, 0.16; p = 0.0001) lower estimated BMD at the calcaneus, a 0.14 SD (95%CI 0.05, 0.24; p = 0.004) lower total hip BMD(a), a 0.12 SD (95%CI 0.02, 0.23; p = 0.026) lower lumbar spine BMD(a) and a 0.18 SD (95%CI 0.06, 0.29; p = 0.003) lower trabecular BMD at the distal radius for each copy of the minor allele. There was no association with serum levels of bone turnover markers and a single SNP which was associated with cortical density was also associated with cortical BMC and thickness.</p>
<p><b>Conclusions:</b> Our data replicate previous associations found between SNPs in the 6q25 locus and BMD(a) at the hip and extend these data to include associations with calcaneal ultrasound parameters and radial volumetric BMD.</p>
Perceptions, preferences and barriers: : A qualitative study of greenspace and under-representation in Leeds, UK
Global gene expression analysis of apple fruit development from the floral bud to ripe fruit
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Apple fruit develop over a period of 150 days from anthesis to fully ripe. An array representing approximately 13000 genes (15726 oligonucleotides of 45–55 bases) designed from apple ESTs has been used to study gene expression over eight time points during fruit development. This analysis of gene expression lays the groundwork for a molecular understanding of fruit growth and development in apple.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Using ANOVA analysis of the microarray data, 1955 genes showed significant changes in expression over this time course. Expression of genes is coordinated with four major patterns of expression observed: high in floral buds; high during cell division; high when starch levels and cell expansion rates peak; and high during ripening. Functional analysis associated cell cycle genes with early fruit development and three core cell cycle genes are significantly up-regulated in the early stages of fruit development. Starch metabolic genes were associated with changes in starch levels during fruit development. Comparison with microarrays of ethylene-treated apple fruit identified a group of ethylene induced genes also induced in normal fruit ripening. Comparison with fruit development microarrays in tomato has been used to identify 16 genes for which expression patterns are similar in apple and tomato and these genes may play fundamental roles in fruit development. The early phase of cell division and tissue specification that occurs in the first 35 days after pollination has been associated with up-regulation of a cluster of genes that includes core cell cycle genes.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Gene expression in apple fruit is coordinated with specific developmental stages. The array results are reproducible and comparisons with experiments in other species has been used to identify genes that may play a fundamental role in fruit development.</p
The LEECH Exoplanet Imaging Survey: Limits on Planet Occurrence Rates Under Conservative Assumptions
We present the results of the largest (m) direct
imaging survey for exoplanets to date, the Large Binocular Telescope
Interferometer (LBTI) Exozodi Exoplanet Common Hunt (LEECH). We observed 98
stars with spectral types from B to M. Cool planets emit a larger share of
their flux in compared to shorter wavelengths, affording LEECH an
advantage in detecting low-mass, old, and cold-start giant planets. We
emphasize proximity over youth in our target selection, probing physical
separations smaller than other direct imaging surveys. For FGK stars, LEECH
outperforms many previous studies, placing tighter constraints on the hot-start
planet occurrence frequency interior to au. For less luminous,
cold-start planets, LEECH provides the best constraints on giant-planet
frequency interior to au around FGK stars. Direct imaging survey
results depend sensitively on both the choice of evolutionary model (e.g., hot-
or cold-start) and assumptions (explicit or implicit) about the shape of the
underlying planet distribution, in particular its radial extent. Artificially
low limits on the planet occurrence frequency can be derived when the shape of
the planet distribution is assumed to extend to very large separations, well
beyond typical protoplanetary dust-disk radii ( au), and when
hot-start models are used exclusively. We place a conservative upper limit on
the planet occurrence frequency using cold-start models and planetary
population distributions that do not extend beyond typical protoplanetary
dust-disk radii. We find that of FGK systems can host a 7 to 10
planet from 5 to 50 au. This limit leaves open the

The Peculiar Debris Disk of HD 111520 as Resolved by the Gemini Planet Imager
Using the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI), we have resolved the circumstellar
debris disk around HD 111520 at a projected range of ~30-100 AU in both total
and polarized -band intensity. The disk is seen edge-on at a position angle
of ~165 along the spine of emission. A slight inclination or
asymmetric warping are covariant and alters the interpretation of the observed
disk emission. We employ 3 point spread function (PSF) subtraction methods to
reduce the stellar glare and instrumental artifacts to confirm that there is a
roughly 2:1 brightness asymmetry between the NW and SE extension. This specific
feature makes HD 111520 the most extreme examples of asymmetric debris disks
observed in scattered light among similar highly inclined systems, such as HD
15115 and HD 106906. We further identify a tentative localized brightness
enhancement and scale height enhancement associated with the disk at ~40 AU
away from the star on the SE extension. We also find that the fractional
polarization rises from 10 to 40% from 0.5" to 0.8" from the star. The
combination of large brightness asymmetry and symmetric polarization fraction
leads us to believe that an azimuthal dust density variation is causing the

Observations of Arp 220 using Herschel-SPIRE: An Unprecedented View of the Molecular Gas in an Extreme Star Formation Environment
We present Herschel SPIRE-FTS observations of Arp~220, a nearby ULIRG. The
FTS continuously covers 190 -- 670 microns, providing a good measurement of the
continuum and detection of several molecular and atomic species. We detect
luminous CO (J = 4-3 to 13-12) and water ladders with comparable total
luminosity; very high-J HCN absorption; OH+, H2O+, and HF in absorption; and CI
and NII. Modeling of the continuum yields warm dust, with T = 66 K, and an
unusually large optical depth of ~5 at 100 microns. Non-LTE modeling of the CO
shows two temperature components: cold molecular gas at T ~ 50 K and warm
molecular gas at T ~1350 K. The mass of the warm gas is 10% of the cold gas,
but dominates the luminosity of the CO ladder. The temperature of the warm gas
is in excellent agreement with H2 rotational lines. At 1350 K, H2 dominates the
cooling (~20 L_sun/M_sun) in the ISM compared to CO (~0.4 L_sun/M_sun). We
found that only a non-ionizing source such as the mechanical energy from
supernovae and stellar winds can excite the warm gas and satisfy the energy
budget of ~20 L_sun/M_sun. We detect a massive molecular outflow in Arp 220
from the analysis of strong P-Cygni line profiles observed in OH+, H2O+, and
H2O. The outflow has a mass > 10^{7} M_sun and is bound to the nuclei with
velocity < 250 km/s. The large column densities observed for these molecular
ions strongly favor the existence of an X-ray luminous AGN (10^{44} ergs/s) in

Many people have low blood levels of vitamin D, especially in winter or if confined indoors, because summer sunshine is the main source of vitamin D for most people. Government vitamin D intake recommendations for the general population are 400 IU (10 µg) per day for the UK7 and 600 IU (15 µg) per day for the USA (800 IU (20 µg) per day for >70 years) and the EU.9 Taking a daily supplement (400 IU /day (10 µg/day) in the UK) and eating foods that provide vitamin D is particularly important for those self-isolating with limited exposure to sunlight. Vitamin D intakes greater than the upper limit of 4000 IU (100 µg) per day may be harmful and should be avoided unless under personal medical/clinical advice by a qualified health professional
Multi-centre parallel arm randomised controlled trial to assess the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a group-based cognitive behavioural approach to managing fatigue in people with multiple sclerosis

Background
Fatigue is one of the most commonly reported and debilitating symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS); approximately two-thirds of people with MS consider it to be one of their three most troubling symptoms. It may limit or prevent participation in everyday activities, work, leisure, and social pursuits, reduce psychological well-being and is one of the key precipitants of early retirement. Energy effectiveness approaches have been shown to be effective in reducing MS-fatigue, increasing self-efficacy and improving quality of life. Cognitive behavioural approaches have been found to be effective for managing fatigue in other conditions, such as chronic fatigue syndrome, and more recently, in MS. The aim of this pragmatic trial is to evaluate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of a recently developed group-based fatigue management intervention (that blends cognitive behavioural and energy effectiveness approaches) compared with current local practice.
Methods
This is a multi-centre parallel arm block-randomised controlled trial (RCT) of a six session group-based fatigue management intervention, delivered by health professionals, compared with current local practice. 180 consenting adults with a confirmed diagnosis of MS and significant fatigue levels, recruited via secondary/primary care or newsletters/websites, will be randomised to receive the fatigue management intervention or current local practice. An economic evaluation will be undertaken alongside the trial. Primary outcomes are fatigue severity, self-efficacy and disease-specific quality of life. Secondary outcomes include fatigue impact, general quality of life, mood, activity patterns, and cost-effectiveness. Outcomes in those receiving the fatigue management intervention will be measured 1 week prior to, and 1, 4, and 12 months after the intervention (and at equivalent times in those receiving current local practice). A qualitative component will examine what aspects of the fatigue management intervention participants found helpful/unhelpful and barriers to change.
Discussion
This trial is the fourth stage of a research programme that has followed the Medical Research Council guidance for developing and evaluating complex interventions. What makes the intervention unique is that it blends cognitive behavioural and energy effectiveness approaches. A potential strength of the intervention is that it could be integrated into existing service delivery models as it has been designed to be delivered by staff already working with people with MS. Service users will be involved throughout this research. Trial registration: Current Controlled Trials ISRCTN7651747
The REFLECT Statement: Methods and Processes of Creating Reporting Guidelines for Randomized Controlled Trials for Livestock and Food Safety by Modifying the CONSORT Statement
The conduct of randomized controlled trials in livestock with production, health and food-safety outcomes presents unique challenges that may not be adequately reported in trial reports. The objective of this project was to modify the CONSORT (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials) statement to reflect the unique aspects of reporting these livestock trials. A 2-day consensus meeting was held on 18–19 November 2008 in Chicago, IL, USA, to achieve the objective. Prior to the meeting, a Web-based survey was conducted to identify issues for discussion. The 24 attendees were biostatisticians, epidemiologists, food-safety researchers, livestock-production specialists, journal editors, assistant editors and associate editors. Prior to the meeting, the attendees completed a Web-based survey indicating which CONSORT statement items may need to be modified to address unique issues for livestock trials. The consensus meeting resulted in the production of the REFLECT (Reporting Guidelines for Randomized Control Trials) statement for livestock and food safety and 22-item checklist. Fourteen items were modified from the CONSORT checklist and an additional sub-item was proposed to address challenge trials. The REFLECT statement proposes new terminology, more consistent with common usage in livestock production, to describe study subjects. Evidence was not always available to support modification to or inclusion of an item. The use of the REFLECT statement, which addresses issues unique to livestock trials, should improve the quality of reporting and design for trials reporting production, health and food-safety outcomes
