Cosmological model with interactions in the dark sector
A cosmological model is proposed for the current Universe consisted of
non-interacting baryonic matter and interacting dark components. The dark
energy and dark matter are coupled through their effective barotropic indexes,
which are considered as functions of the ratio between their energy densities.
It is investigated two cases where the ratio is asymptotically stable and their
parameters are adjusted by considering best fits to Hubble function data. It is
shown that the deceleration parameter, the densities parameters, and the
luminosity distance have the correct behavior which is expected for a viable
present scenario of the Universe.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figure
Four Lessons in Versatility or How Query Languages Adapt to the Web
Exposing not only human-centered information, but machine-processable data on the Web is one of the commonalities of recent Web trends. It has enabled a new kind of applications and businesses where the data is used in ways not foreseen by the data providers. Yet this exposition has fractured the Web into islands of data, each in different Web formats: Some providers choose XML, others RDF, again others JSON or OWL, for their data, even in similar domains. This fracturing stifles innovation as application builders have to cope not only with one Web stack (e.g., XML technology) but with several ones, each of considerable complexity. With Xcerpt we have developed a rule- and pattern based query language that aims to give shield application builders from much of this complexity: In a single query language XML and RDF data can be accessed, processed, combined, and re-published. Though the need for combined access to XML and RDF data has been recognized in previous work (including the W3Câs GRDDL), our approach differs in four main aspects: (1) We provide a single language (rather than two separate or embedded languages), thus minimizing the conceptual overhead of dealing with disparate data formats. (2) Both the declarative (logic-based) and the operational semantics are unified in that they apply for querying XML and RDF in the same way. (3) We show that the resulting query language can be implemented reusing traditional database technology, if desirable. Nevertheless, we also give a unified evaluation approach based on interval labelings of graphs that is at least as fast as existing approaches for tree-shaped XML data, yet provides linear time and space querying also for many RDF graphs. We believe that Web query languages are the right tool for declarative data access in Web applications and that Xcerpt is a significant step towards a more convenient, yet highly efficient data access in a âWeb of Dataâ
Unified dark energy models : a phenomenological approach
A phenomenological approach is proposed to the problem of universe
accelerated expansion and of the dark energy nature. A general class of models
is introduced whose energy density depends on the redshift in such a way
that a smooth transition among the three main phases of the universe evolution
(radiation era, matter domination, asymptotical de Sitter state) is naturally
achieved. We use the estimated age of the universe, the Hubble diagram of Type
Ia Supernovae and the angular size - redshift relation for compact and
ultracompact radio structures to test whether the model is in agreement with
astrophysical observation and to constrain its main parameters. Although
phenomenologically motivated, the model may be straightforwardly interpreted as
a two fluids scenario in which the quintessence is generated by a suitably
chosen scalar field potential. On the other hand, the same model may also be
read in the context of unified dark energy models or in the framework of
modified Friedmann equation theories.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication on Physical Review
Cosmological evolution of interacting dark energy in Lorentz violation
The cosmological evolution of an interacting scalar field model in which the
scalar field interacts with dark matter, radiation, and baryon via Lorentz
violation is investigated. We propose a model of interaction through the
effective coupling . Using dynamical system analysis, we study the
linear dynamics of an interacting model and show that the dynamics of critical
points are completely controlled by two parameters. Some results can be
mentioned as follows. Firstly, the sequence of radiation, the dark matter, and
the scalar field dark energy exist and baryons are sub dominant. Secondly, the
model also allows the possibility of having a universe in the phantom phase
with constant potential. Thirdly, the effective gravitational constant varies
with respect to time through . In particular, we consider a simple
case where has a quadratic form and has a good agreement with the
modified CDM and quintessence models. Finally, we also calculate the
first post--Newtonian parameters for our model.Comment: 14 pages, published versio
Constraining the dark energy dynamics with the cosmic microwave background bispectrum
We consider the influence of the dark energy dynamics at the onset of cosmic
acceleration on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) bispectrum, through the
weak lensing effect induced by structure formation. We study the line of sight
behavior of the contribution to the bispectrum signal at a given angular
multipole : we show that it is non-zero in a narrow interval centered at a
redshift satisfying the relation , where the
wavenumber corresponds to the scale entering the non-linear phase, and is
the cosmological comoving distance. The relevant redshift interval is in the
range 0.1\lsim z\lsim 2 for multipoles 1000\gsim\ell\gsim 100; the signal
amplitude, reflecting the perturbation dynamics, is a function of the
cosmological expansion rate at those epochs, probing the dark energy equation
of state redshift dependence independently on its present value. We provide a
worked example by considering tracking inverse power law and SUGRA Quintessence
scenarios, having sensibly different redshift dynamics and respecting all the
present observational constraints. For scenarios having the same present
equation of state, we find that the effect described above induces a projection
feature which makes the bispectra shifted by several tens of multipoles, about
10 times more than the corresponding effect on the ordinary CMB angular power
spectrum.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, matching version accepted by Physical Review D,

Large-scale magnetic fields from inflation due to a -even Chern-Simons-like term with Kalb-Ramond and scalar fields
We investigate the generation of large-scale magnetic fields due to the
breaking of the conformal invariance in the electromagnetic field through the
-even dimension-six Chern-Simons-like effective interaction with a fermion
current by taking account of the dynamical Kalb-Ramond and scalar fields in
inflationary cosmology. It is explicitly demonstrated that the magnetic fields
on 1Mpc scale with the field strength of G at the present time
can be induced.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, version accepted for publication in Eur. Phys.

Categorizing Different Approaches to the Cosmological Constant Problem
We have found that proposals addressing the old cosmological constant problem
come in various categories. The aim of this paper is to identify as many
different, credible mechanisms as possible and to provide them with a code for
future reference. We find that they all can be classified into five different
schemes of which we indicate the advantages and drawbacks.
Besides, we add a new approach based on a symmetry principle mapping real to
imaginary spacetime.Comment: updated version, accepted for publicatio
Cosmological parameters from SDSS and WMAP
We measure cosmological parameters using the three-dimensional power spectrum
P(k) from over 200,000 galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) in
combination with WMAP and other data. Our results are consistent with a
``vanilla'' flat adiabatic Lambda-CDM model without tilt (n=1), running tilt,
tensor modes or massive neutrinos. Adding SDSS information more than halves the
WMAP-only error bars on some parameters, tightening 1 sigma constraints on the
Hubble parameter from h~0.74+0.18-0.07 to h~0.70+0.04-0.03, on the matter
density from Omega_m~0.25+/-0.10 to Omega_m~0.30+/-0.04 (1 sigma) and on
neutrino masses from <11 eV to <0.6 eV (95%). SDSS helps even more when
dropping prior assumptions about curvature, neutrinos, tensor modes and the
equation of state. Our results are in substantial agreement with the joint
analysis of WMAP and the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey, which is an impressive
consistency check with independent redshift survey data and analysis
techniques. In this paper, we place particular emphasis on clarifying the
physical origin of the constraints, i.e., what we do and do not know when using
different data sets and prior assumptions. For instance, dropping the
assumption that space is perfectly flat, the WMAP-only constraint on the
measured age of the Universe tightens from t0~16.3+2.3-1.8 Gyr to
t0~14.1+1.0-0.9 Gyr by adding SDSS and SN Ia data. Including tensors, running
tilt, neutrino mass and equation of state in the list of free parameters, many
constraints are still quite weak, but future cosmological measurements from
SDSS and other sources should allow these to be substantially tightened.Comment: Minor revisions to match accepted PRD version. SDSS data and ppt

Hydration status affects thirst and salt preference but not energy intake or postprandial ghrelin in healthy adults : a randomised crossover trial
Background
Few studies have investigated the effect of hydration status on appetite for food in healthy adults. Prior work suggests hydration status does not alter appetite or energy intake, with mixed findings regarding appetite hormone secretion. However, an extensive investigation into both the psychological and physiological appetitive responses to hydration status has never been conducted.
Objective
To investigate the effect of hydration status on multiple facets of appetite.
Design
After 3 days pre-trial standardization, a range of appetite tasks were conducted when hypohydrated (HYPO) and euhydrated (EUHY) in 16 healthy participants (8 men). Hydration status was manipulated via dehydration in a heat tent for 60âŻmin and subsequent fluid restriction (HYPO) or replacement (EUHY). The next day, a food reward computer task was completed followed by an ad libitum pasta meal. Pre- and post-prandial visual analogue scales assessing hunger, fullness, and flavour desires (sweet, salty, savoury and fatty) were additionally completed. Blood samples were taken the previous day before the hydration interventions in a euhydrated state, and in the fasted and post-prandial state during HYPO and EUHY.
Results
HYPO induced -1.9âŻÂąâŻ1.2% body mass change, compared to -0.2âŻÂąâŻ0.6% , with accompanying changes in markers of hypohydration which were not seen during EUHY. A higher desire for foods was associated with a higher water content but the association was weaker in EUHY compared to HYPO, (β= -0.33âŻmm/g of food water content, p < 0.001) in the food reward task. Visual analogue scales showed similar hunger and fullness between interventions, but during HYPO there was consistently higher thirst (average range in difference 27â32âŻmm across all time points) and lower fasted desire for salt (â23, 95% CI â10, â35âŻmm). Ad libitum energy intake (HYPO 1953âŻÂąâŻ742âŻkJ, EUHY 2027âŻÂąâŻ926âŻkJ; pâŻ=âŻ0.542) and post-prandial ghrelin concentrations (HYPO 180âŻÂąâŻ65 pg mLâ1, EUHY 188âŻÂąâŻ71 pg mLâ1; pâŻ=âŻ0.736) were similar by hydration status.
Conclusions
An acute manipulation to hydration status altered desire for salt and foods of differing water contents, but did not influence energy intake at an ad libitum pasta meal. Further research should investigate whether these appetites would alter food choice
Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant
improvement over previously published limits.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters B. Replaced with version publishe
