Environmental chemical exposures and disturbances of heme synthesis.
Porphyrias are relatively uncommon inherited or acquired disorders in which clinical manifestations are attributable to a disturbance of heme synthesis (porphyrin metabolism), usually in association with endogenous or exogenous stressors. Porphyrias are characterized by elevations of heme precursors in blood, urine, and/or stool. A number of chemicals, particularly metals and halogenated hydrocarbons, induce disturbances of heme synthesis in experimental animals. Certain chemicals have also been linked to porphyria or porphyrinuria in humans, generally involving chronic industrial exposures or environmental exposures much higher than those usually encountered. A noteworthy example is the Turkish epidemic of porphyria cutanea tarda produced by accidental ingestion of wheat treated with the fungicide hexachlorobenzene. Measurements of excreted heme precursors have the potential to serve as biological markers for harmful but preclinical effects of certain chemical exposures; this potential warrants further research and applied field studies. It has been hypothesized that several otherwise unexplained chemical-associated illnesses, such as multiple chemical sensitivity syndrome, may represent mild chronic cases of porphyria or other acquired abnormalities in heme synthesis. This review concludes that, although it is reasonable to consider such hypotheses, there is currently no convincing evidence that these illnesses are mediated by a disturbance of heme synthesis; it is premature or unfounded to base clinical management on such explanations unless laboratory data are diagnostic for porphyria. This review discusses the limitations of laboratory measures of heme synthesis, and diagnostic guidelines are provided to assist in evaluating the symptomatic individual suspected of having a porphyria

Drawing upon research in the curriculum of Hospitality, this article explores the contrasting ways in which the prescribed curriculum is translated into the enacted curriculum is school and college contexts. It identifies organisational culture and teacher and student backgrounds and dispositions as central to the emerging contrasts. It uses this evidence to argue that the evolution of credit frameworks which assume a rational curriculum is unhelpful in understanding the multiple plays of difference in learning and the enacted curriculu
Charged Particle Production in Proton-, Deuteron-, Oxygen- and Sulphur-Nucleus Collisions at 200 GeV per Nucleon
The transverse momentum and rapidity distributions of net protons and
negatively charged hadrons have been measured for minimum bias proton-nucleus
and deuteron-gold interactions, as well as central oxygen-gold and
sulphur-nucleus collisions at 200 GeV per nucleon. The rapidity density of net
protons at midrapidity in central nucleus-nucleus collisions increases both
with target mass for sulphur projectiles and with the projectile mass for a
gold target. The shape of the rapidity distributions of net protons forward of
midrapidity for d+Au and central S+Au collisions is similar. The average
rapidity loss is larger than 2 units of rapidity for reactions with the gold
target. The transverse momentum spectra of net protons for all reactions can be
described by a thermal distribution with `temperatures' between 145 +- 11 MeV
(p+S interactions) and 244 +- 43 MeV (central S+Au collisions). The
multiplicity of negatively charged hadrons increases with the mass of the
colliding system. The shape of the transverse momentum spectra of negatively
charged hadrons changes from minimum bias p+p and p+S interactions to p+Au and
central nucleus-nucleus collisions. The mean transverse momentum is almost
constant in the vicinity of midrapidity and shows little variation with the
target and projectile masses. The average number of produced negatively charged
hadrons per participant baryon increases slightly from p+p, p+A to central

Inference on inspiral signals using LISA MLDC data
In this paper we describe a Bayesian inference framework for analysis of data
obtained by LISA. We set up a model for binary inspiral signals as defined for
the Mock LISA Data Challenge 1.2 (MLDC), and implemented a Markov chain Monte
Carlo (MCMC) algorithm to facilitate exploration and integration of the
posterior distribution over the 9-dimensional parameter space. Here we present
intermediate results showing how, using this method, information about the 9

Report on the first round of the Mock LISA Data Challenges
The Mock LISA Data Challenges (MLDCs) have the dual purpose of fostering the
development of LISA data analysis tools and capabilities, and demonstrating the
technical readiness already achieved by the gravitational-wave community in
distilling a rich science payoff from the LISA data output. The first round of
MLDCs has just been completed: nine data sets containing simulated
gravitational wave signals produced either by galactic binaries or massive
black hole binaries embedded in simulated LISA instrumental noise were released
in June 2006 with deadline for submission of results at the beginning of
December 2006. Ten groups have participated in this first round of challenges.
Here we describe the challenges, summarise the results, and provide a first

The 7.5 Magnitude Limit Sample of Bright Short-Period Binary Stars. I. How Many Contact Binaries Are There?
A sample of bright contact binary stars (W UMa-type or EW, and related: with
beta Lyr light curves, EB, and ellipsoidal, ELL - in effect, all but the
detached, EA), to the limit of Vmax = 7.5 magnitude is deemed to include all
discoverable short-period (P<1 days) binaries with photometric variation larger
than about 0.05 magnitude. Of the 32 systems in the final sample, 11 systems
have been discovered by the Hipparcos satellite. The combined spatial density
is evaluated at (1.02+/-0.24)x10^-5 pc^-3. The Relative Frequency of Occurrence
(RFO), defined in relation to the Main Sequence stars, depends on the
luminosity. An assumption of RFO~1/500 for MV>+1.5 is consistent with the data,
although the number statistics is poor with the resulting uncertainty in the
spatial density and the RFO by a factor of about two. The RFO rapidly decreases
for brighter binaries to a level of 1/5,000 for MV<+1.5 and to 1/30,000 for
MV<+0.5. The high RFO of 1/130, previously determined from the deep OGLE-I
sample of Disk Population W UMa-type systems towards Baade's Window, is
inconsistent with and unconfirmed by the new results. Possible reasons for the
large discrepancy are discussed. They include several observational effects,
but also a possibility of a genuine increase in the contact-binary density in

UWISH2 -- The UKIRT Widefield Infrared Survey for H2
We present the goals and preliminary results of an unbiased, near-infrared,
narrow-band imaging survey of the First Galactic Quadrant (10deg<l<65deg ;
-1.3deg<b<+1.3deg). This area includes most of the Giant Molecular Clouds and
massive star forming regions in the northern hemisphere. The survey is centred
on the 1-0S(1) ro-vibrational line of H2, a proven tracer of hot, dense
molecular gas in star-forming regions, around evolved stars, and in supernova
remnants. The observations complement existing and upcoming photometric surveys
(Spitzer-GLIMPSE, UKIDSS-GPS, JCMT-JPS, AKARI, Herschel Hi-GAL, etc.), though
we probe a dynamically active component of star formation not covered by these
broad-band surveys. Our narrow-band survey is currently more than 60% complete.
The median seeing in our images is 0.73arcsec. The images have a 5sigma
detection limit of point sources of K=18mag and the surface brightness limit is
10^-19Wm^-2arcsec^-2 when averaged over our typical seeing. Jets and outflows
from both low and high mass Young Stellar Objects are revealed, as are new
Planetary Nebulae and - via a comparison with earlier K-band observations
acquired as part of the UKIDSS GPS - numerous variable stars. With their
superior spatial resolution, the UWISH2 data also have the potential to reveal
the true nature of many of the Extended Green Objects found in the GLIMPSE
