    Sind Frauenrechte Menschenrechte? Genderdiskriminierungsfälle in Russland und der Europäische Gerichtshof für Menschenrechte

    Unsere Studie versucht der Frage nachzugehen, warum es im Gerichtssystem Russlands und beim Europäischen Gerichtshof für Menschenrechte (EGMR) praktisch keine Verfahren wegen Genderdiskriminierung gibt. Die These lautet, dass die Erklärung hierfür in der weit verbreiteten Wahrnehmung zu suchen ist, dass genderbasierte Diskriminierung ein im Vergleich mit anderen Rechtsverletzungen weniger grundsätzliches Menschenrechtsproblem darstellt. Unsere Feldforschung (die auch Interviews mit russischen Menschenrechtsaktivisten, feministischen Aktivisten und Rechtsanwälten einschloss, die Menschenrechtsverletzungen vor russische und internationale Gerichte bringen) hat ergeben, dass diese Wahrnehmung von Menschenrechten, die sowohl bei russischen Menschenrechtlern selbst als auch in der Bevölkerung anzutreffen ist, ein beträchtliches Hindernis bei der Bewusstseinsbildung über Diskriminierung darstellt. Das führt dazu, dass nur wenige Frauen vor Gericht ziehen und es an Anwälten mangelt, die dazu ausgebildet wären, bei Diskriminierungsfällen vor inländischen oder internationalen Gerichten das Mandat zu übernehmen

    Screening and treatment for tuberculosis in a cohort of unaccompanied minor refugees in Berlin, Germany

    INTRODUCTION: In 2015, 4062 unaccompanied minor refugees were registered in Berlin, Germany. According to national policies, basic clinical examination and tuberculosis (TB) screening is a prerequisite to admission to permanent accommodation and schooling for every refugee. This article evaluates the use of an interferon-γ-release-assay (IGRA) during the initial examination and TB screening of 970 unaccompanied minor refugees. RESULTS: IGRA test were obtained during TB screening for 301 (31.0%) of 970 adolescents not previously screened for TB. Positive IGRA results were obtained in 13.9% (42/301). Most of the 42 IGRA-positive refugees originated from Afghanistan or Syria (n?20 and 10 respectively). Two IGRA-positive adolescents were lost to follow-up, 2 were diagnosed with TB and the remaining 38 diagnosed with latent TB infection (LTBI). Demographic features of the 40 patients with positive IGRA result were as follows: 39 male, median age 16.8 years (IQR 16.0-17.2y), none meeting underweight criteria (median BMI 21.3kg/m2). On initial chest X-ray 2/40 participants had signs of active TB, while in 38 active disease was excluded and the diagnosis of latent TB infection (LTBI) made. Active hepatitis B-co-infection was diagnosed in 3/38 patients. All patients with LTBI received Isoniazid and Rifampicin for 3 months without occurrence of severe adverse events. The most frequently observed side effect was transient upper abdominal pain (n = 5). Asymptomatic elevation of liver transaminases was seen in 2 patients. 29 patients completed treatment with no signs of TB disease at the end of chemoprevention and 9 were lost to follow up. CONCLUSION: Screening for TB infection in minor refugees was feasible in our setting with a relatively high rate of TB infection detected. Chemopreventive treatment was tolerated well regardless of underlying hepatitis-B-status. Minor refugees migrating to Germany should be screened for TB infection, instead of TB disease only, regardless of the background TB incidence

    Diversity for Nutrition and Enhanced Resilience (DiNER) Fairs and Voucher Programming: Evaluation and learning in the Southern Africa Region

    In response to major shocks, governments and international humanitarian agencies often use direct seed distribution as a first level response to help communities stabilize or restart their farming systems. In contrast, CRS uses Seed and Voucher Fairs (S&VFs). After many years of successfully implementing S&VF, CRS developed a new type of seed fair that specifically focuses on the relief-development continuum and diversity, both in household dietary diversity for improved nutrition, and crop diversity for increased farming system resilience. This new approach, Diversity for Nutrition and Enhanced Resilience (DiNER) Fair, offers inputs such as a diverse mix of quality seed for multiple crops and varieties with an emphasis on those which might alleviate a current stress (e.g. drought or disease) or encourage better nutrition, as well as small livestock, fishing gear, agriculture technologies, and other inputs. DiNER Fairs can create a platform for establishing longer-term business relationships between farmers and seed suppliers. This study evaluates how the DiNER Fair approach improves participating households’ food and nutrition security as well as strengthen access to seed and other agricultural inputs at the last mile in Madagascar, Malawi, and Zimbabwe

    Russia in a changing climate

    Climate change will shape the future of Russia, and vice versa, regardless of who rules in the Kremlin. The world\u27s largest country is warming faster than Earth as a whole, occupies more than half the Arctic Ocean coastline, and is waging a carbon-intensive war while increasingly isolated from the international community and its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Officially, the Russian government argues that, as a major exporter of hydrocarbons, Russia benefits from maintaining global reliance on fossil fuels and from climate change itself, because warming may increase the extent and quality of its arable land, open a new year-round Arctic sea route, and make its harsh climate more livable. Drawing on the collective expertise of a large group of Russia-focused social scientists and a comprehensive literature review, we challenge this narrative. We find that Russia suffers from a variety of impacts due to climate change and is poorly prepared to adapt to these impacts. The literature review reveals that the fates of Russia\u27s hydrocarbon-dependent economy, centralized political system, and climate-impacted population are intertwined and that research is needed on this evolving interrelationship, as global temperatures rise and the international economy decarbonizes in response.     Our growing awareness of the microbial world's importance and diversity contrasts starkly with our limited understanding of its fundamental structure. Despite recent advances in DNA sequencing, a lack of standardized protocols and common analytical frameworks impedes comparisons among studies, hindering the development of global inferences about microbial life on Earth. Here we present a meta-analysis of microbial community samples collected by hundreds of researchers for the Earth Microbiome Project. Coordinated protocols and new analytical methods, particularly the use of exact sequences instead of clustered operational taxonomic units, enable bacterial and archaeal ribosomal RNA gene sequences to be followed across multiple studies and allow us to explore patterns of diversity at an unprecedented scale. The result is both a reference database giving global context to DNA sequence data and a framework for incorporating data from future studies, fostering increasingly complete characterization of Earth's microbial diversity.Peer reviewe

    EU/US/CTAD Task Force: Lessons Learned from Recent and Current Alzheimer's Prevention Trials

    At a meeting of the EU/US/Clinical Trials in Alzheimer’s Disease (CTAD) Task Force in December 2016, an international group of investigators from industry, academia, and regulatory agencies reviewed lessons learned from ongoing and planned prevention trials, which will help guide future clinical trials of AD treatments, particularly in the pre-clinical space. The Task Force discussed challenges that need to be addressed across all aspects of clinical trials, calling for innovation in recruitment and retention, infrastructure development, and the selection of outcome measures. While cognitive change provides a marker of disease progression across the disease continuum, there remains a need to identify the optimal assessment tools that provide clinically meaningful endpoints. Patient- and informant-reported assessments of cognition and function may be useful but present additional challenges. Imaging and other biomarkers are also essential to maximize the efficiency of and the information learned from clinical trials
