    Bridgewater Normal School and Isawa Shuji’s Reforms of Modern Teacher Education in Meiji Japan

    Shuji Isawa was sent by the Ministry of Education in Japan to study at Bridgewater Normal School in Massachusetts from 1875 to 1877 and at Harvard University from 1877 to 1878. He was one of the famous intellectuals who tested the telephone with Alexander Graham Bell and translated ideas of evolution into Japan. Through his studies with Boston public school music teacher Luther Whiting Mason, Isawa was instrumental in introducing new curriculum for the teaching of music, physical education, and special education for elementary schools in Meiji Japan. Isawa’s life highlights the complex process in the negotiation between traditional and modern or East and West in his quest for learning. His writings in the 1880s demonstrate his efforts of integrating Japanese and western educational curriculum, while his later studies of Chinese language and culture show his ambivalence towards East Asia especially as an educational offi cial in colonial Taiwan in 1895. Through studies of Isawa’s records at Bridgewater State College, a recent visit to his birth house in Ina, Nagano and attendance at the Isawa music festival in October 2007, as well as meeting with a fourth-generation descendant of Isawa in Tokyo, this paper is a preliminary study of the relationship between history and memory in Isawa’s legacy in both Japan and the United States

    Negotiating Colonialism and Chineseness: Museums, Tours, and Heritage Preservation in Pearl River Delta, Macau, and Hong Kong

    The history of Hong Kong, Macau, and the Pearl River Delta in connecting China with the world through European colonialism and globalization is a well-documented story. Yet the recent designations of the Historic Centre of Macau in 2005 and the Kaiping diaolou (fortified watched towers and mansions) in 2007 as World Cultural Heritage sites have further placed two Chinese outposts of western influence and overseas emigration into sharper focus. With the return of Hong Kong and Macau to Chinese sovereignty at the turn of the last century along with cultural change in the Pearl River Delta, museums, tourism, and heritage sites have become critical nexus in negotiating the meanings of the colonial past, transnational culture, national growth and local identity. This paper uses a historical and cultural approach to examine three themes relating to museums, historic tours, and World Heritage designation in these three local areas. By exploring western delta\u27s linkage with overseas Chinese, Macau\u27s connection with the Portuguese past, and Hong Kong\u27s search for its identity, this paper combines historical sources and local ethnography to argue for a new understanding of Chineseness and global Asia through the process of cultural invention and reinterpretation. In addition, the paper seeks to illuminate the tension and conflict in the interpretation of the past over western colonial legacy, Chinese cultural integration, and interests of the local community

    Teaching in China: Reflections on Higher Education, Student Learning, and Teacher Training

    In spring and summer 2013, four faculty members from Bridgewater State University taught courses on history, business, education, American studies, and second language acquisition in several universities in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, and a workshop for teachers in an international school in Xiamen. These opportunities offer our faculty new perspectives on the current state of higher education, student learning, and teacher training in China and Hong Kong. Wing-kai To taught history, culture, immigration, and ethnicity to graduate students and undergraduate students in the spring semester at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and University of Hong Kong and in a three-week intensive summer course at Beijing Jiaotong University. Chien-wen Yu taught a one-month summer session on business and strategic management to students in the College of Business at Shanghai Normal University. John Marvelle offered his expertise in a 2-week workshop for teachers at the Xiamen International School (XIS) and taught a three-week intensive summer session about American culture and literature at Beijing Jiaotong University. Ryan LaBrozzi taught theories and practices of second language acquisition for English learners in the same three-week intensive session in Beijing. These faculty members will share their experiences about the rewards and challenges of teaching in China, issues of student learning in higher education and K-12 education there, and US-China cooperation in educational exchanges. We will examine the opportunities and constraints in curricular issues, pedagogy, academic freedom, and student success in China. We welcome participation from the audience to share their teaching experiences in Asia as well

    Comparative effectiveness of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors for new-onset gastric cancer and gastric diseases in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus:a population-based cohort study

    Objective: To compare the risks of gastric cancer and other gastric diseases in patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) exposed to sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2I), dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP4I) or glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP1a). Design: This was a population-based cohort study of prospectively collected data on patients with T2DM prescribed SGLT2I, DPP4I or GLP1a between January 1st 2015 and December 31st 2020 from Hong Kong. The outcomes were new-onset gastric cancer, peptic ulcer (PU), acute gastritis, non-acute gastritis, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Propensity score matching (1:1) using the nearest neighbour search was performed, and multivariable Cox regression was applied. A three-arm comparison between SGLT2I, DPP4I and GLP1a was conducted using propensity scores with inverse probability of treatment weighting. Results: A total of 62,858 patients (median age: 62.2 years old [SD: 12.8]; 55.93% males; SGLT2I: n = 23,442; DPP4I: n = 39,416) were included. In the matched cohort, the incidence of gastric cancer was lower in SGLT2I (Incidence rate per 1000 person-year, IR: 0.32; 95% confidence interval, CI 0.23–0.43) than in DPP4I (IR per 1000 person-year: 1.22; CI 1.03–1.42) users. Multivariable Cox regression found that SGLT2I use was associated with lower risks of gastric cancer (HR 0.30; 95% CI 0.19–0.48), PU, acute gastritis, non-acute gastritis, and GERD (p &lt; 0.05) compared to DPP4I use. In the three-arm analysis, GLP1a use was associated with higher risks of gastric cancer and GERD compared to SGLT2I use.Conclusions: The use of SGLT2I was associated with lower risks of new-onset gastric cancer, PU, acute gastritis, non-acutegastritis, and GERD after matching and adjustments compared to DPP4I use. SGLT2I use was associated with lower risksof GERD and gastric cancer compared to GLP1a use.<br/

    Carboxyl-terminal truncated HBx regulates a distinct microRNA transcription program in Hepatocellular carcinoma development

    Background: The biological pathways and functional properties by which misexpressed microRNAs (miRNAs) contribute to liver carcinogenesis have been intensively investigated. However, little is known about the upstream mechanisms that deregulate miRNA expressions in this process. In hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), hepatitis B virus (HBV) X protein (HBx), a transcriptional trans-activator, is frequently expressed in truncated form without carboxyl-terminus but its role in miRNA expression and HCC development is unclear. Methods: Human non-tumorigenic hepatocytes were infected with lentivirus-expressing full-length and carboxyl-terminal truncated HBx (Ct-HBx) for cell growth assay and miRNA profiling. Chromatin immunoprecipitation microarray was performed to identify the miRNA promoters directly associated with HBx. Direct transcriptional control was verified by luciferase reporter assay. The differential miRNA expressions were further validated in a cohort of HBV-associated HCC tissues using real-time PCR. Results: Hepatocytes expressing Ct-HBx grew significantly faster than the full-length HBx counterparts. Ct-HBx decreased while full-length HBx increased the expression of a set of miRNAs with growth-suppressive functions. Interestingly, Ct-HBx bound to and inhibited the transcriptional activity of some of these miRNA promoters. Notably, some of the examined repressed-miRNAs (miR-26a, -29c, -146a and -190) were also significantly down-regulated in a subset of HCC tissues with carboxyl-terminal HBx truncation compared to their matching non-tumor tissues, highlighting the clinical relevance of our data. Conclusion: Our results suggest that Ct-HBx directly regulates miRNA transcription and in turn promotes hepatocellular proliferation, thus revealing a viral contribution of miRNA deregulation during hepatocarcinogenesis. © 2011 Yip et al.published_or_final_versio

    The central role of natural killer cells in mediating acute myocarditis after mRNA COVID-19 vaccination

    BACKGROUND: Vaccine-related acute myocarditis is recognized as a rare and specific vaccine complication following mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccinations. The precise mechanisms remain unclear. We hypothesized that natural killer (NK) cells play a central role in its pathogenesis. METHODS: Samples from 60 adolescents with vaccine-related myocarditis were analyzed, including pro-inflammatory cytokines, cardiac troponin T, genotyping, and immunophenotyping of the corresponding activation subsets of NK cells, monocytes, and T cells. Results were compared with samples from 10 vaccinated individuals without myocarditis and 10 healthy controls. FINDINGS: Phenotypically, high levels of serum cytokines pivotal for NK cells, including interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interferon α2 (IFN-α2), IL-12, and IFN-γ, were observed in post-vaccination patients with myocarditis, who also had high percentage of CD57 NK cells in blood, which in turn correlated positively with elevated levels of cardiac troponin T. Abundance of the CD57 NK subset was particularly prominent in males and in those after the second dose of vaccination. Genotypically, killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) KIR2DL5B(-)/KIR2DS3(+)/KIR2DS5(-)/KIR2DS4del(+) was a risk haplotype, in addition to single-nucleotide polymorphisms related to the NK cell-specific expression quantitative trait loci DNAM-1 and FuT11, which also correlated with cardiac troponin T levels in post-vaccination patients with myocarditis. CONCLUSION: Collectively, these data suggest that NK cell activation by mRNA COVID-19 vaccine contributed to the pathogenesis of acute myocarditis in genetically and epidemiologically vulnerable subjects

    Association between Physical Activity and Cardiovascular Risk in Chinese Youth Independent of Age and Pubertal Stage

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Childhood and adolescence are critical periods of habit formation with substantial tracking of lifestyle and cardiovascular risk into adulthood. There are various guidelines on recommended levels of physical activity in youth of school-age. Despite the epidemic of obesity and diabetes in China, there is a paucity of data in this regard in Chinese youth. We examined the association of self-reported level of physical activity and cardiovascular risk in Hong Kong Chinese youth of school-age.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This was a cross-sectional study conducted in 2007-8 in a school setting with 2119 Hong Kong Chinese youth aged 6-20 years. Physical activity level was assessed using a validated questionnaire, CUHK-PARCY (The Chinese University of Hong Kong: Physical Activity Rating for Children and Youth). A summary risk score comprising of waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose and lipids was constructed to quantify cardiovascular risk.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In this cohort, 21.5% reported high level of physical activity with boys being more active than girls (32.1% versus 14.1%, p < 0.001). Regression analysis showed physical activity level, sex and pubertal stage were independently associated with cardiovascular risk score.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Self-reported level of physical activity is associated with cardiovascular risk factors in Chinese youth after adjusting for sex and pubertal stage.</p

    Differential cross section measurements for the production of a W boson in association with jets in proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV

    Measurements are reported of differential cross sections for the production of a W boson, which decays into a muon and a neutrino, in association with jets, as a function of several variables, including the transverse momenta (pT) and pseudorapidities of the four leading jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta (HT), and the difference in azimuthal angle between the directions of each jet and the muon. The data sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb[superscript −1]. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators, MadGraph + pythia and sherpa, and to next-to-leading-order calculations from BlackHat + sherpa. The differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the predictions, apart from the pT distributions of the leading jets at high pT values, the distributions of the HT at high-HT and low jet multiplicity, and the distribution of the difference in azimuthal angle between the leading jet and the muon at low values.United States.
