    Inbreeding avoidance in rhesus macaques: Whose choice?

    Whether nonhuman primates avoid copulating with close kin living in their social group is controversial. If sexual aversion to relatives occurs, it should be stronger in females than in males because of females' greater investment in each offspring and hence greater costs resulting from less viable offspring. Data presented here show that adult male rhesus macaques breeding in their natal groups at Cayo Santiago experienced high copulatory success, but copulated less with females of their own matrilineages than with females of other matrilineages. Adult females were never observed to copulate with males of their own matrilineage during their fertile periods. Although natal males sometimes courted their relatives, examination of two measures of female mate choice showed that females chose unrelated natal males over male kin. Female aversion to male kin was specific to the sexual context; during the birth season, females did not discriminate against their male relatives in distributing grooming. Evolved inbreeding avoidance mechanisms probably produce different outcomes at Cayo Santiago than in wild rhesus macaque populations.     Scientific evidence regularly guides policy decisions1, with behavioural science increasingly part of this process2. In April 2020, an influential paper3 proposed 19 policy recommendations (‘claims’) detailing how evidence from behavioural science could contribute to efforts to reduce impacts and end the COVID-19 pandemic. Here we assess 747 pandemic-related research articles that empirically investigated those claims. We report the scale of evidence and whether evidence supports them to indicate applicability for policymaking. Two independent teams, involving 72 reviewers, found evidence for 18 of 19 claims, with both teams finding evidence supporting 16 (89%) of those 18 claims. The strongest evidence supported claims that anticipated culture, polarization and misinformation would be associated with policy effectiveness. Claims suggesting trusted leaders and positive social norms increased adherence to behavioural interventions also had strong empirical support, as did appealing to social consensus or bipartisan agreement. Targeted language in messaging yielded mixed effects and there were no effects for highlighting individual benefits or protecting others. No available evidence existed to assess any distinct differences in effects between using the terms ‘physical distancing’ and ‘social distancing’. Analysis of 463 papers containing data showed generally large samples; 418 involved human participants with a mean of 16,848 (median of 1,699). That statistical power underscored improved suitability of behavioural science research for informing policy decisions. Furthermore, by implementing a standardized approach to evidence selection and synthesis, we amplify broader implications for advancing scientific evidence in policy formulation and prioritization

    Tweaking the Moral Temperature: The Moralization and Demoralization of Social Issues

    How do people come to perceive their attitudes as more or less tied to morality? Most research on how attitudes change between domains (preference, norms/conventions, and morality) has examined how attitudes become moralized. Because moral attitudes can have social costs, however, it may be equally important to explore the processes by which attitudes become less moralized or demoralized. The present research examined how people might moralize their attitude about male circumcision (an attitude generally perceived in the United States as a matter of norms or preference) and demoralize their attitude about female circumcision (an attitude generally perceived in the United States as a moral issue), in two convenience samples of American adults (Study 1, N = 757, Study 2 N = 637). Exposing participants to factual messages about the harm and negative effects on sexual functioning of male circumcision predicted stronger moralized opposition to the practice through stronger negative emotions, perceptions of harm, and perceptions of male circumcision as a violation of autonomy. In contrast, exposing participants to factual messages about the lack of harm or negative effects on sexual functioning of female circumcision predicted weaker moralized opposition to the practice through weaker negative emotions, perceptions of harm, and perceptions of female circumcision as an autonomy violation. Implications of these results for theories of morality and (de)moralization are discussed

    A Signal Detection Approach to Understanding the Identification of Fake News

    International audienceResearchers across many disciplines seek to understand how misinformation spreads with a view toward limiting its impact. One important question in this research is how people determine whether a given piece of news is real or fake. In the current article, we discuss the value of signal detection theory (SDT) in disentangling two distinct aspects in the identification of fake news: (a) ability to accurately distinguish between real news and fake news and (b) response biases to judge news as real or fake regardless of news veracity. The value of SDT for understanding the determinants of fake-news beliefs is illustrated with reanalyses of existing data sets, providing more nuanced insights into how partisan bias, cognitive reflection, and prior exposure influence the identification of fake news. Implications of SDT for the use of source-related information in the identification of fake news, interventions to improve people’s skills in detecting fake news, and the debunking of misinformation are discussed
