    For those wishing to generalize about the Victorians the Great Exhibition of 1851 usually proves irresistable. But it does seem an obvious omission that so little is said about the disorders which kept the country upended during the preceding six months, that is, during the episode of the restoration of the Roman Catholic hierarchy, the "Papal Aggression”. Christopher Dawson has urged that the one needs the other to symbolize properly the Victorian frame of mind. Here I wish to outline the underlying causes of this last great outburst of No-Popery feeling in an effort to trace the paradox of the aroused, angry, bigoted Guy Fawkes Day-men of November appearing the next summer as the staid, curious and progressive-minded citizens sunning themselves in the glory of all that glittering machinery so carefully displayed beneath the vaulted glass dome of their Crystal Palac

    An Investigation into the Analysis of Truncated Standard Normal Distributions Using Heuristic Techniques

    Standard normal distributions (SND) and truncated standard normal distributions (TSND) have been widely used and accepted methods to characterize the data sets in various engineering disciplines, financial industries, medical fields, management, and other mathematic and scientific applications. For engineering managers, risk managers and quality practitioners, the use of the standard normal distribution and truncated standard normal distribution have particular relevance when bounding data sets, evaluating manufacturing and assembly tolerances, and identifying measures of quality. In particular, truncated standard normal distributions are used in areas such as component assemblies to bound upper and lower process specification limits. This dissertation presents a heuristic approach for the analysis of assembly-level truncated standard normal distributions. This dissertation utilizes unique properties of a characteristic function to analyze truncated assemblies. Billingsley (1995) suggests that an inversion equation aids in converting the characteristic functions for a given truncated standard normal distribution to its corresponding probability density function. The heuristic for the inversion characteristics for a single doubly truncated standard normal distribution uses a known truncated standard normal distribution as a probability density function baseline. Additionally, a heuristic for the analysis of TSND assemblies building from the initial inversion heuristic was developed. Three examples are used to further demonstrate the heuristics developed by this dissertation. Mathematical formulation, along with correlation and regression analysis results, support the alternate hypotheses presented by this dissertation. The correlation and regression analysis provides additional insight into the relationship between the truncated standard normal distributions analyzed. Heuristic procedures and results from this dissertation will also serve as a benchmark for future research. This research contributes to the body of knowledge and provides opportunities for continued research in the area of truncated distribution analysis. The results and proposed heuristics can be applied by engineering managers, quality practitioners, and other decision makers to the area of assembly analysis

    Collecting Cultural Feedback on Ethiopian Views on Girls, Sport, and Voice

    This qualitative study used data collected from five interviews conducted to gather cultural and linguistic feedback on a 21-question instrument created for a future study focused on Ethiopian girl athletes. Participants met the following criteria: (a) native to Ethiopia (b) at least 15 years old and (c) proficient English reading and speaking skills. Participants did not complete the questionnaire, rather, they read it and provided cultural and linguistic feedback on its content. Participants provided feedback via interviews both in person and over the phone during a two-week period. The instrument was designed to collect data from members of Girls Gotta Run Foundation, a non-profit organization in Ethiopia that uses sport to promote gender equity. It consists of questions that focus on girls’ perceptions on the constructs of gender, sport, and voice empowerment. Findings demonstrated the importance of providing greater flexibility in questions that related to age and career goals, while the impact running has on Ethiopian culture was reinforced. Conducting this pilot study demonstrated the importance of testing cross-cultural instruments prior to final instrument administration to gain the most culturally accurate data possible

    Further observations on the usefulness of the sonographic Murphy sign in the evaluation of suspected acute cholecystitis

    A positive sonographic Murphy sign, the presence of maximal tenderness elicited over a sonographically localized gallbladder, has been reported to be a helpful adjunctive finding in patients with proven acute cholecystitis who are evaluated with ultrasonography. We evaluated 200 patients with right upper quadrant pain, thought to be acute cholecystitis. Results of ultrasound examinations and subsequent follow-up were tabulated. The sensitivity of the sonographic Murphy sign in acute cholecystitis was 86% with a specificity of 35%, positive predictive value of 43%, and negative predictive value of 82%. The sensitivity of the sonographic findings, including stones, gallbladder wall edema, and pericholecystic fluid collections, was 93%, a specificity of 53%. The combination of the Murphy sign accompanied by gallstones yielded a specificity of 77%. The large number of false positives, and only moderate improvement in specificity when accompanied by gallstones, makes this sign unreliable in separating acute from chronic cholecystitis. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/38197/1/1870230304_ftp.pd
